Did you know that World Oceans Day is on 8th June every year? Read this fact sheet to find out all about our oceans. What are the oceans? The sea covers about 70% of the earth. The five biggest areas of sea are called oceans. From the biggest to the smallest, they are: the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Southern Ocean and the Arctic Ocean. 126

Are the oceans important? Yes, they’re very important. First, we get some of our food there. Fish live in the oceans, and they’re good to eat. The oceans are important for jobs too. Some people catch fish for us to eat, and other people sell the fish. Lots of other people also work on boats and ships because we use the sea to travel, and to take things from one place to another. When we go on holiday, we often spend our free time at the beach – we go swimming, surfing and sailing in the water. The oceans also give us clean air. We know that plants and trees in forests on land clean the air. Well, plants in the oceans clean the air too. What is the future of our oceans? For many years we thought that the oceans were clean and safe, but now we know that it isn’t true. There is a lot of rubbish in the water and lots of it is plastic. When fish and other sea animals eat plastic, they die. Some scientists believe that, in 30 years, there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish. Another problem is that the oceans are becoming warmer, and some plants and sea animals are dying. When sea plants die, some fish don’t have enough food to eat and they die too. It isn’t right that life in the oceans is dying – we must save our oceans now! What are you going to do on World Oceans Day to help? UNIT 10 127
