Lesson 1 READING A Find and underline these words in the reviews. What do they mean? bully butterfly friendship laugh main triplet Book of the week Tom Gates: Family, Friends and Furry Creatures by Liz Pichon In this book from the popular Tom Gates series, Tom does a school project about his family. He makes his family tree and finds out some surprising facts about his grandparents and his parents. If you read the first chapter, you will want to read to the end. He has problems with his shoes. Why are they are making strange noises? His friends laugh at him and every page will make you laugh, too! It’s even funnier than the other Tom Gates books and there are lots of silly cartoons which you will love, too. Liz Pichon is our favourite author. A reader’s favourite The Butterfly Club by Jacqueline Wilson I like all Jacqueline Wilson’s stories, but this is my favourite. Tina is the main character. She’s a triplet, but she’s the smallest and the weakest. Her sisters Phil and Maddie are bigger and stronger than her. They look after little Tina. One day, their strict new teacher, Miss Lovejoy, asks Tina to help her build a butterfly garden with the meanest girl in the class. Her name is Selma and she’s the class bully. No one likes her. Soon Tina finds out that Selma is not as scary as she seems and that she, too, needs a friend. I loved this story because it’s about friendship! Sally, 12 years B Read the reviews and write Right or Wrong. 1 Both Liz Pichon and Jacqueline Wilson are authors. 2 Both stories are about children at school. 3 The Tom Gates story is funny. 4 There aren’t any pictures in the Tom Gates book. 5 Tina is younger than her sisters. 6 In The Butterfly Club, Tina has to do something difficult. 7 Selma is a popular child. 102 Amazing fact! Minecraft was invented in 2009 by a Swedish game designer called Markus Persson. By early 2018, more than 144 million people of all ages were playing it! It is even used in some schools as part of the lessons! But what makes it a great game? ■ Players design their own worlds. Each world is made of blocks. Minecraft gives players a toolbox which they use to build mountains, lakes, towers, palaces and even caves. They really can create anything they want with these shapes. ■ T here are no limits! Players can save and add to the world which they create, and they can improve it. They dig for (mine) materials and make (craft) them into something. Minecraft teaches players that you need sand to make glass, for example. Also, if they want a door which is made of wood, they'll have to find a tree first! They learn how shapes fit into spaces. When players think about these problems, they are using their brains and practising science and maths. ■ In Minecraft, players can create something amazing. It’s their Minecraft world and they decide what to build. They can even invite other players to visit their world to explore it together. Playing with their friends and family is even better than playing Minecraft alone! Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl Roald Dahl wrote a lot of excellent books for children, but this one is my favourite. It’s about a boy called Charlie who lives with his parents and grandparents in a very small house. They don’t have enough money and Charlie never has new clothes, chocolate or books. One day, Charlie finds some money and buys some chocolate. Inside, he finds a special ticket and he wins a visit to Mr Willy Wonka’s amazing chocolate factory. It is a very strange place and Charlie has lots of adventures there with four other children. The other children are not nice and during the story they all disappear! At the end of the story, Willy Wonka gives Charlie the factory because he is a kind boy. I think that this is Roald Dahl’s most popular book. I love it because it has unusual characters and an exciting story. UNIT 6 SKILLS BUILDING 111
