Grievance Procedure • Make sure employees have multiple reporting channels for complaints • Timely response

Documentation • Document everything • Keep records of investigation separate from personnel file

Suspension Pending Investigation • One of the most important steps in an internal investigation • Does much to avoid unnecessary litigation

Total Investigation • Prompt, thorough, without retaliation • Get handwritten, signed statements from everyone, especially the accused and the accuser • Come to a decision based on all of the facts

Notice & Hearing • Provides written notice of official decisions • Provides an internal hearing process for challenging the decision
