Description of the Prophet’s (‫ )ﷺ‬Prayer … An-Noor Al-Mubeen Project The Second Sajdah Next, he ‫ ﷺ‬would say takbeer and prostrate for the second time...⬇ ✅ As the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said: “then say ‘Allah is the Greatest’ and prostrate until your joints are relaxed [and do that in all your prayer].” He ‫ ﷺ‬would perform this sajdah exactly as he performed the first one. Next, he ‫ ﷺ‬would raise his head while saying takbeer The Sitting of Rest ✅ Next, he ‫ ﷺ‬would sit straight [on his left foot, upright, until every bone returned to its position] before he gets up. This is a brief sitting referred to as “Jalsat Al-Istiraahah” (the sitting of rest), and it takes place after the two prostrations in every rak'ah in which the praying person does not do the shahaada (i.e. after the first and after the third) ✅ It is narrated that the Prophet ‫“ ﷺ‬when he ‫ ﷺ‬had prayed an odd number of Rak'a, he ‫ ﷺ‬did not stand up till he ‫ ﷺ‬had sat up properly.” [al-Bukhari] Supporting Oneself with the Hands on Rising for the Next Rak’ah The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬would get up for the second rak'ah, supporting himself on the ground And when he ‫ ﷺ‬got up for the second rak'ah, he would [immediately] commence with All Praise be to Allah (Faatihah 1:1) [without reciting the opening supplication], and he ‫ ﷺ‬would perform this rak'ah exactly as he performed the first, except that he ‫ ﷺ‬would make it shorter than the first, as before. 51

Description of the Prophet’s (‫ )ﷺ‬Prayer … An-Noor Al-Mubeen Project ◼ English Transliteration of Supplications in Lesson 13 ◼ The Athkaar between the two Sajdahs Allahum-maghfir lee, warhamnee, wajburnee, warfa'nee, wahdinee, wa 'aafinee, warzuqnee Rabbighfir lee, ighfir lee 52

Description of the Prophet’s (‫ )ﷺ‬Prayer … An-Noor Al-Mubeen Project Lesson 14 The First Tashahhud Next, the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬would sit for tashahhud after finishing the second rak'ah... In a two-rak'ah prayer such as Fajr, he would sit muftarishan, as he used to sit between the two sajdah And he ‫ ﷺ‬would sit in the first tashahhud similarly in a three- or four-rak'ah prayer (that is, he would sit muftarishan) ✅ And the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said: “When you sit in the middle of the prayer, do it completely (so that you are at rest) and spread your left thigh; then recite at- tashahhud.” [Abu Dawud] Squatting here is prohibited, as the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬forbade us from squatting like the squatting of a dog. When he ‫ ﷺ‬sat in tashahhud, he ‫ ﷺ‬would place his right palm on his right thigh (in one narration: knee), and his left palm on his left thigh (in one narration: knee, spreading it upon it); and he ‫ ﷺ‬would put the end of his right elbow on his right thigh [and not seperate them from one another] The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬also forbade a man who was sitting in prayer resting on his left hand, and said: ‘Verily, that is the prayer of the Jews’. Moving the Right Index Finger in Testimony of Faith (Tashahhud) The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬would place his left hand on his left knee, and would place his right fist on his right thigh, pointing the right index finger (pointer/the one next to the thumb) towards the qiblah, and he ‫ ﷺ‬would look at that finger Also, he ‫ ﷺ‬would put his right thumb on his middle finger, and sometimes “he ‫ ﷺ‬would make a circle with these two.” In addition, he ‫ ﷺ‬would move his right index throughout the supplication dua’a in Tashahhud. 53

Description of the Prophet’s (‫ )ﷺ‬Prayer … An-Noor Al-Mubeen Project ✅ The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Surely, it (the right index) is more powerful against the devil than iron.” [Ahmad] ✅ “He ‫ ﷺ‬would do this in both tashahhud”. The Obligation of the First Tashahhud The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬would recite Tashahhud after every two rak'ah, in low voice When he ‫ ﷺ‬forgot to say tashahhud after the first two rak'ah, he would prostrate (twice) for forgetfulness before the two Salaam in the final sitting (this is known as Sujud As-Sahw) ✅ The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬ordered us to recite tashahhud, and said: “When sitting after every two rak'ah, say: At-tahiyyatu lillahi […etc.] Then choose any supplication that you like and call upon Allah the Almighty and Sublime with it.” [An-Nasa'i] ❎ The time for making this du’aa’ is not after the first tashahhud - it is after the final tashahhud (except in the case of Fajr prayer, where the first tashahhud is also the final tashahhud) How to say the Tashahhud Ibn Mas’ud narrated: ✅ “The Messenger of Allah ‫ ﷺ‬taught me tashahhud taking my hand within his palms, in the same way as he taught me a Surah of the Quran, [at- tashahhud] is: all the best compliments and the prayers and the good things are for Allah. Peace and Allah's Mercy and Blessings be on you, O Prophet! Peace be on us and on the pious slaves of Allah, I testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and I also testify that Muhammad is Allah's slave and His Apostle.” 54

Description of the Prophet’s (‫ )ﷺ‬Prayer … An-Noor Al-Mubeen Project ✅ Then one should send blessings on the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬saying: “O Allah, bestow Your favour on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad as You have bestowed Your favour on Ibrahim and on the family of Ibrahim, You are Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You have blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim, You are Praiseworthy, Most Glorious” [al-Bukhari & Muslim] Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammad wa ‘ala aali Muhammad kama salayta ‘ala Ibraaheem wa ‘ala aali Ibraaheem, innaka hameedun majeed. Allahumma baarik ‘ala Muhammad wa ‘ala aali Muhammad kama baarakta ‘ala Ibraaheem wa ‘ala aali Ibraaheem, innak hameedun majeed. Should one say As-Salaah ‘ala an-Nabiyy (Sending Blessings on the Prophet) in first Tashahhud ⁉ ✏ The scholars differed concerning this matter... ✅ Both Al-Albani and Ibn Baz may Allah have mercy on them, favoured that: Tashahhud and blessings on the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬should be said in the first tashahhud (and in the last one) ✅ While the view of the majority of scholars is that one should say: only (At-tahiyyatu lillahi) in the first tashahhud, and say both the (At-tahiyyatu lillahi) AND the (Prayers on the Prophet) in the last Tashahhud. “He ‫ ﷺ‬would sit after every two rak'ah (in three and four rak’ah prayers: Maghrib, Dhuhr, ‘Asr or ‘Isha) and recite tashahhud: \"At-tahiyyatu lillahi ………” It is favoured to say after that: “Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammad ………” because of the many narrations that made it obligatory to send the blessing on the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬in tashahhud ✅ If one omits it (Allahumma salli ala Muhammad …..) in the first tashahhud there is no harm, as it was narrated in some hadith that the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬got up to the third rak'ah without saying it 55

Description of the Prophet’s (‫ )ﷺ‬Prayer … An-Noor Al-Mubeen Project 56

Description of the Prophet’s (‫ )ﷺ‬Prayer … An-Noor Al-Mubeen Project Standing up for the Third, and then the Fourth, Rak'ah Next, the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬would get up for the third rak'ah supporting himself on his hands, while saying takbeer and raising his hands to the level of his shoulders He ‫ ﷺ‬would do this too when he got up to the fourth rak’ah, but wouldn’t raise his hands with Takbeer ✏ The majority of scholars agree that the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬used to raise his hands at four points in the prayer, namely: 1) When saying the opening takbeer (takbeerat al-ihram) 2) Before bowing 3) When rising from bowing 4) When standing up following the (first) two rak‘ah, i.e., after reciting the first tashahhud [Islam Q&A] ✅ He ‫ ﷺ‬would put his hands on his chest and recite in each rak’ah: Al-Fatiha, and sometimes in Dhuhr Prayer he ‫ ﷺ‬would add a few verses after that 57

Description of the Prophet’s (‫ )ﷺ‬Prayer … An-Noor Al-Mubeen Project Lesson 15 The Final Tashahhud & The Obligation of this Tashahhud The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬would sit after completing the fourth rak'ah, for the last Tashahhud… And he ‫ ﷺ‬would do it just as he did in the first Tashahhud: except that (he would sit mutawarrikan) which means: sitting with the hip on the ground, having his left foot under his right leg and propping his right foot up. ✅ Then he ‫ ﷺ‬would say at-tashahhud as he did in the first tashahhud, adding to it sending blessings on the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬ The Obligation of Seeking Refuge from four things before Supplicating He ‫ ﷺ‬used to say: \"When one of you has finished the last Tashahhud, he should seek refuge with Allah from four things, saying: “O Allah! I seek refuge in You from the torment of Hell, from the torment of the grave, from the trials of living and dying, and from the evil trials of Al-Masih Ad-Dajjal (Antichrist/the false Christ), then he should supplicate for himself whatever he desires.” “Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabi jahannam, wa min 'adhabil-qabr, wa min fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat, wa min sharri fitnatil-masihid-dajjal” [Muslim] 58

Description of the Prophet’s (‫ )ﷺ‬Prayer … An-Noor Al-Mubeen Project Supplication before Tasleem & its various types He ‫ ﷺ‬would say any of these supplications, and ordered the worshipper to choose any of them: ◾ O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the torment of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the tribulation of the Al-Masihid-Dajjal, and I seek refuge with You from the trials of life and death. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from sin and debt. ◾ O Allah! I seek refuge in You from the evil of that which I have done and the evil of that which I have not done. ◾ O Allah, grant me an easy reckoning ◾ O Allah, by Your Knowledge of the unseen and by Your Power over creation, let me live if You know that life is good for me, and let me die if You know that death is good for me. O Allah, I ask You to grant me fear of You in private and in public. I ask you for the word of truth in times of contentment and anger. I ask You for moderation in wealth and in poverty. I ask you for blessings never ceasing and the coolness of my eye (i.e. pleasure) that never ends. I ask You for pleasure after Your Judgment and I ask You for a life of coolness after death. I ask You for the delight of gazing upon Your Face and the joy of meeting You without any harm and misleading trials befalling me. O Allah, dress us with the beauty of Faith, and make us guides who are upon (correct) guidance. ◼ He ‫ ﷺ‬taught Abu Bakr as-Siddeeq (radi Allahu' anhu) to say: “O Allah, verily I have wronged myself much and there is None who forgives sins except You. Grant me forgiveness from You and have mercy on me for You are the Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” ◼ He ‫ ﷺ‬instructed 'Aa'ishah (radi Allahu 'anhaa) to say: “O Allah! I ask of You all Good, [the imminent and the far-off,] that of it which I know and that which I do not know. I seek refuge with You from all Evil, [the imminent and the far-off,] that of it which I know and that which I do not know. I ask of You the Garden, and whatever saying or deed which brings one near to it; I seek refuge with You from the Fire, and (from) whatever saying or deed which brings one near to it. I ask of You [the] good of what was asked of You by Your slave and messenger [Muhammad; and I seek refuge with You from evil of what Your slave and messenger Muhammad ‫ ﷺ‬sought refuge with You]. [I ask of You] 60

Description of the Prophet’s (‫ )ﷺ‬Prayer … An-Noor Al-Mubeen Project that whatever You have decreed for me, whatever fate You have decreed for me, make it’s end right guidance.” ◼ He ‫ ﷺ‬heard a man saying in his tashahhud: O Allah, I ask You. O Allah, You are the One, the Only, Self-Sufficient Master, Who was not begotten and begets not and none is equal to Him. Forgive me my sins, surely you are Forgiving, Merciful. On this, he ‫ ﷺ‬said: he has been forgiven, he has been forgiven. ◼ And he ‫ ﷺ‬heard another man saying in his tashahhud: “O Allah, I ask You, as You are the Owner of praise, there is none worthy of worship but You alone, You have no partner. You are the Giver of all good. O Creator of the heavens and the earth, Owner of majesty and honour. O Living and Everlasting One, I ask you for Paradise and I seek refuge in You from the fire.” So the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said to his companions (radhya Allah a’laihem): 'Do you know what he has supplicated with?' They said: \"Allah (SWT) and His Messenger know best.\" He said: 'By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, he called upon Allah by His greatest Name, which, if He is called by it, He responds, and if He is asked by it, He gives.'\" ◾”O Allah, forgive me what I have sent before me and what I have left behind me, what I have concealed and what I have done openly, what I have done in excess, and what You are better aware of than I. You are the One Who sends forth and You are the One Who delays. There is none worthy of worship but You.” [Muslim] This is the final supplication the Prophet made before the two salam (at- tasleem) 61

Description of the Prophet’s (‫ )ﷺ‬Prayer … An-Noor Al-Mubeen Project Lesson 16 At-Tasleem Then the Messenger of Allah ‫ ﷺ‬used to say Salam to his right: “Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah” (As-salamu ‘alaikum wa rahmatullah, as-salamu ‘alaikum wa rahmatullah) And to his left: “Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah” (‘As-salamu ‘alaikum wa rahmatullah, as-salamu ‘alaikum wa rahmatullah) And sometimes he ‫ ﷺ‬would add: “and His blessings” (wa barakatoh) He ‫ ﷺ‬forbade to gesture with the hand at Tasleem: The Sahaba (companions of the Prophet ‫ )ﷺ‬used to gesture with their hands when saluting to the right and left; when the Messenger of Allah ‫ ﷺ‬saw them, he said: “It is enough for each of you to place his hand on his thigh, and then salute his brothers who are on his right and left” The Conclusion All that has been mentioned of the description of the Prophet's prayer ‫ﷺ‬ applies equally to men and women, for there is nothing in the Sunnah to necessitate the exception of women from any of these descriptions. ✏ Does the woman differ from the man in some postures of prayer❓ The way in which women pray is the same as the way in which men pray in every part of the prayer, prostration, sitting, and so on. This is based on the following evidence: The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said: \"Pray as you have seen me praying.\" [al-Bukhari] This is addressed to both men and women. The general meaning of the words of the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬: \"Women are the twin halves of men.\" 64

Description of the Prophet’s (‫ )ﷺ‬Prayer … An-Noor Al-Mubeen Project What we understand from this is: If something is said in masculine terms, it is addressed to women too, except in cases where there is evidence to indicate that it applies only to women. This is the last of what has been possible to compile regarding the description of the Prophet's prayer ‫ ﷺ‬from the takbeer to the tasleem: I hope that Allah will accept this compilation for his sake and guide us to apply the Sunnah of His kind and merciful Prophet. Summary Video describing the Prophet’s ‫ ﷺ‬Prayer: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQjK-GlTjEQ 65

Description of the Prophet’s (‫ )ﷺ‬Prayer … An-Noor Al-Mubeen Project ✏ General differences between men & women in prayer 1) Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala waived the duty of offering and making up prayers when the woman is menstruating or during nifaas (childbirth bleeding). Because she is unable to purify herself, so by His mercy Allah has prescribed that she should not pray, and He has not prescribed that she should make it up, because making it up would be very difficult, as prayers are offered five times a day, and menses may last for several days, seven or eight or more, and nifaas may last as long as forty days. So, by His mercy and kindness towards her, Allah has waived the duty of offering and making up prayers. 2) A woman is not allowed to lead men or boys in prayer, she can lead other women and she stands in the middle of the first row. 3) The ‘awrah of a woman in prayer is: Her hair and her entire body, and she has to cover them, apart from the face and hands according to scholarly consensus. While the ‘awrah of a man is the area between the navel and the knees, according to the majority of scholars. 4) Women are commanded to lower their voices in prayer, in presence of non- mahram men. When praying behind non-mahram imam, and he made a mistake in the prayer, she should clap her hands (with the palm of her right on the back of the left). The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said: “If something happens to anyone during his prayer, let him say Subhaan Allah, for if he says Subhaan Allah, people will take notice. Clapping is only for women.” 5) Men usually raise their voices: in Fajr, Maghrib and ‘Isha prayers When saying Takbeer at the beginning of every prayer When saying Aameen after the imam says Aameen While for a woman: she should lower her voice at mentioned times when praying in the presence of strange men (non- mahram): for fear of fitnah 66

Description of the Prophet’s (‫ )ﷺ‬Prayer … An-Noor Al-Mubeen Project (temptation), and raise it if she in her own house or no non-mahram can hear her. 6) Congregational prayer is not required of them in the same way as it is of men. It is not obligatory for women to offer any of the five obligatory prayers in congregation, and their prayer in their houses is better for them than praying in the mosques, whether that is an obligatory or voluntary prayer. But if she wants to pray in the mosque, she should not be prevented from doing so, on condition that she observes proper Islamic etiquette when going out and when praying, by going out fully covered, not wearing perfume, and praying behind the men. [Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah 8/213] If one woman and one man are praying, she should stand behind him, not next to him The rows in congregational prayers should be as follows: men pray in first rows boys behind them women pray in the last rows The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said “The best rows for men are the front ones and the worst are the back ones, and the best rows for women are the back ones and the worst are the front ones.” But if they are screened from the men, then the best rows are the front ones and the worst ones are the back ones, just as is the case with men, and they have to complete the front rows first, then the next and so on, and close the gaps, just like men, because of the general meaning of the proven hadeeth from the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬concerning that. Sources: Sifat Salat An-Nabi, by Al-Albani Risalah fi Sifat Salat An-Nabi, by Ibn-Baz Common Mistakes In Prayer, by Muhammad Bazmool Websites: https://islamqa.info/en/categories https://sunnah.com/ 67
