Supplications from the Qur’an & Sunnah Supplications from the Qur’an & Sunnah Allah SWT obligates His slaves to supplicate (make dua’a ) to Him, He says: “Call upon Me; I will respond to you.” [Ghaafir:60] He Almighty has promised to respond to those that call upon Him, and this is from His benevolence and generosity, for He is the Most-Benevolent & the Most-Generous. In the Qur’an , Allah the Exalted assures that He will provide and answer the supplication of His obedient and believing servant, He SWT says: “And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided.” [2:186] Dua’a, prayers, supplications and invocations are highly significant and important in Islam, our beloved Prophet ﷺsaid: “Dua’a is worship” [Abu Dawud & at-Tirmidhi] We learn from this that supplication and making dua’a should be sincerely to Allah SWT Alone, because supplicating to other than him is a form of shirk (associating others with Allah SWT), and is a major sin. Allah SWT says: “And who is more astray than one who calls on (invokes) besides Allaah” [46:6] ┄┉❈ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❈┉┄ None has the right to be worshiped except Allah SWT. So we should call upon Him, rely on Him, place our trust and faith in Him. Supplications from the Qur’an & Sunnah For He Almighty is the Most-High, the Most-Exalted, the Most-Powerful. He is our Provider, and He is our Lord, the Loving, the All-Hearing and the Most-Generous. Indeed, my Lord is near and responsive [Hud:61] Ibn Taymiyah said: People should make dua’a by reciting the prescribed dua’a that are mentioned in the Qur’an an and Sunnah, because these are undoubtedly virtuous and good, and this is the straight path. The scholars of Islam and the imams have mentioned the dua’a that are prescribed in Islam, and turned away from the innovated dua’a, so we should follow them in that. And so, together, we will begin the course: SUPPLICATIONS FROM THE QURA’AN & SUNNAH An-Noor Al-Mubeen Project An-Noor Al-Mubeen Project 5
Supplications from the Qur’an & Sunnah Introduction to Supplication (Dua’a) The Prophet ( )ﷺsaid: “Nothing can change the Divine decree except dua’a.” [Ahmad, Ibn Majah, At-Tirmidhi] Dua’a is of two types: 1) Dua’a of asking Where the individual asks Allah, may He be exalted, for what will benefit him in this world and the hereafter, and to ward off what could harm him in this world and the hereafter 2) Dua’a of worship Where the individual is worshipping Allah, may He be exalted, by doing any kind of worship, in the heart, in his physical actions or in his financial actions. There is no better means by virtue of which Allah grants a person what he likes and wards off what he dislikes than focusing on obeying Allah, worshipping Him and remembering Him. ➡ This is the essence of faith, and Allah wards off harm from those who have faith Everyone who asks of Allah verbally is worshipping Him, because dua’a is worship; when a worshipper prays to Allah, fasts or does Hajj, he is doing so by way of seeking reward from Allah, may He be exalted, and hoping to attain Paradise and be saved from punishment. Can one make dua’a in a language other than Arabic? Ibn Taymiyah said, Ash-Shaafa‘i said: “The language that Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, chose is the language of the Arabs. He revealed His holy Book in Arabic, and made it the language of the An-Noor Al-Mubeen Project 6
Supplications from the Qur’an & Sunnah last of His prophets, Muhammad ()ﷺ. For this reason we say that anyone who is able to learn Arabic should learn it, because it is the preferred language, even though it is not haraam for anyone to speak any other language.” Offering supplication (dua’a ) in a language other than Arabic in the prayer is a matter concerning which there is a difference of opinion among the fuqaha’. ➡ Some of them regard it as haraam, some regard it as makrooh and some regard it is permissible for the one who is not able to speak Arabic. It is permissible for a person to offer supplications that were not narrated in reports, even if that is in colloquial Arabic or in a language other than Arabic, outside of the prayer, or in the prayer when one is unable to speak Arabic, provided that he use any permissible words and avoid transgressing the limits, and provided that his supplication does not involve any sin or severing of ties of kinship. Ibn Taymiyah said: It is permissible to make dua’a in Arabic and in languages other than Arabic. Allah knows the intention of the supplicant and what he wants, no matter what language he speaks, because He hears all the voices in all different languages, asking for all kinds of needs. Sources: https://islamqa.info/en/answers/318586/ruling-on-reciting-adhkaar-in-languages- other-than-arabic https://islamqa.info/en/answers/20953/ruling-on-making-duaa-in-languages-other- than-arabic-in-the-prayer https://islamqa.info/en/answers/262254/ruling-on-offering-supplication-duaa-in-a- language-other-than-arabic-in-the-prayer-and-otherwise https://islamqa.info/en/answers/320772/duaa-is-worship SUPPLICATIONS FROM THE QURA’AN & SUNNAH An-Noor Al-Mubeen Project An-Noor Al-Mubeen Project 7
Supplications from the Qur’an & Sunnah Etiquettes of Making Dua’a 1) The one making dua’a should believe in Tawheed with regard to the divinity, Lordship, names and attributes of Allah. His heart should be filled with Tawheed. In order for Allah to respond to the dua’a, it is essential that the person should be responding to his Lord by obeying Him and not disobeying Him. 2) Sincerity to Allah alone in making dua’a The Prophet ﷺsaid: Dua’a is worship ➡ So sincerity (ikhlaas) is a condition of its being accepted. This is the most important condition. Sincerity in dua’a means: ➡ Having the firm belief that Allah alone, is Able to meet your need, and it also means avoiding any kind of showing off in your dua’a. 3) Ask Allah by His most beautiful names Allah says: “And (all) the Most Beautiful Names belong to Allah, so call on Him by them, and leave the company of those who belie or deny (or utter impious speech against) His Names” [7:180] 4) Praise Allah as He deserves before calling upon Him The Prophet ( )ﷺsaid: “When one of you prays, let him start with praise of Allah, then let him send blessings upon the Prophet ()ﷺ, then let him ask whatever he likes after that.” An-Noor Al-Mubeen Project 8
Supplications from the Qur’an & Sunnah 5) Sending blessings upon the Prophet ()ﷺ He ( )ﷺsaid: “Every dua’a is kept back until you send blessings upon the Prophet ()ﷺ.” [At-Tabaraani] 6) Facing the Qiblah 7) Raising the hands The Messenger of Allah ( )ﷺsaid: “Your Lord, may He be blessed and exalted, is Kind and Most Generous, and He is too kind to let His slave, if he raises his hands to Him, bring them back empty.” [Abu Dawud] The palm of the hand should be raised heavenwards, in the manner of a humble beggar who hopes to be given something. Should the hands be held together when raising them or should there be a gap between them? ✏ Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said that they should be held together. ✏ He said: “As for separating them and holding them far apart from one another, there is no basis for that in the Sunnah or in the words of the scholars.” 8) Having certain faith that Allah will respond, and focusing with proper presence of mind 9) Asking frequently A person should ask his Lord for whatever he wants of the good things in this world and the Hereafter, and he should beseech Allah in dua’a , and not seek a hasty response. An-Noor Al-Mubeen Project 9
Supplications from the Qur’an & Sunnah The Messenger of Allah ( )ﷺsaid: “The dua’a of any one of you will be answered so long as he is not impatient and says, I made dua’a but it was not answered.” [Al-Bukhaari & Muslim] 10) He should be firm in his dua’a The Prophet ( )ﷺsaid: “No one of you should say, ‘O Allah, forgive me if You wish, O Allah, have mercy on me if You wish’; he should be firm in his asking, for Allah cannot be compelled.” [Al-Bukhaari & Muslim] 11) Beseeching, humility, hope & fear Allah says: “Invoke your Lord with humility and in secret” [7:55] “Verily, they used to hasten on to do good deeds, and they used to call on Us with hope and fear, and used to humble themselves before Us” [21:90] “And remember your Lord within yourself, humbly and with fear and without loudness in words in the mornings and in the afternoons” [7:205] 12) Saying dua’a three times 13) Ensuring that one’s food and clothing are halaal & from halaal earning The Prophet ( )ﷺmentioned a man who travels for a long distance and is disheveled and dusty, and he stretches forth his hands towards heaven saying, ‘O Lord, O Lord,’ but his food is haraam, his drink is haraam, his clothing is haraam, he has been nourished with haraam, so how can he be responded to? [Al-Bukhari & Muslim] Ibn Rajab said: Ensuring that one’s food, drink and clothing are halaal, and that one is nourished with halaal, is a means of having one’s dua’a answered. An-Noor Al-Mubeen Project 10
Supplications from the Qur’an & Sunnah 14) Saying Dua’a silently & not out loud. Allah says: “Invoke your Lord with humility and in secret” [7:55] 15) Repentance & turning back to Allah Sin is one of the main reasons why dua’a is not answered, so the person who is making dua’a should hasten to repent and seek forgiveness before he makes dua’a . Allah tells us that Nooh (PBUH) said: I said (to them): Ask forgiveness from your Lord, verily, He is Oft-Forgiving; He will send rain to you in abundance, And give you increase in wealth and children, and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers. [Al-Bukhari & Muslim] If one bears sickness with patience and seeks reward, Allah will make the sickness an expiation for sins. The Prophet ( )ﷺsaid: “No tiredness, exhaustion, worry, grief, distress or harm befalls a believer in this world, not even a thorn that pricks him, but Allah expiates some of his sins thereby.” [al-Bukhari & Muslim] Aisha (RA) reported that the Prophet ( )ﷺused to make this dua’a for others when they were sick. We can make this prayer for ourselves or for others (eg. our children) when afflicted with illness or pain An-Noor Al-Mubeen Project 23
Supplications from the Qur’an & Sunnah ✏ Explanation: Protection of the heart from being attached to other than Allah is a great blessing ➡ We should not place our hope in others; rather it should be reserved for Allah alone. So when we say: “You are the Healer, no healing avails but Yours” The slave acknowledges and emphasizes that only Allah can cure. Prophet Ibrahim said when describing Allah: “And when I am ill, it is He who cures me” [26:80] Any treatment, whether it be medicine or dua’a , will not work unless Allah decrees for that person to get well. This supplication asks Allah the Almighty for complete removal of the disease and its future effects. The benefit of asking Allah for healing that “leaves behind no ailment (illness or disease)”, is that one could be cured from that disease but then another disease resulting from the initial one arises. ✅ So the Prophet ﷺtaught us to pray for complete and total healing. Supplications from the Qur’an & Sunnah 6) Jubn (cowardliness) - over estimating and fearing acts and therefore delaying them or leaving them although they are of great importance; for example, commanding the good and forbidding the evil. 7) Dala’e addayn (the burden of debt) - which can a skew a person to doing wrong, like breaking promises and lying. 8) Ghalabat Arrijaal (being overpowered by men) - who May be oppressive and unjust causing shame, sadness, or corruption. Benefits: ➡ These matters, if arising from dunya causes, can strain the Muslim from every angle and cause great damage. They can prevent the servant from fulfilling obligations and increasing in righteousness. ➡ If however, the concern is for the aakhairah, then this will benefit the servant, as it will motivate him and increase his awareness of Allah the Most-High. ➡ The Prophet ( )ﷺinformed us in the following hadeeth that there is a way out of worry and sorrow ⬇ ✅ “If anyone makes the care of his eternal welfare the sum of his cares Allah will protect him from worldly care, but if he has a variety of cares consisting of matters related to this world, Allah will not be concerned in which of its valleys he perishes.” [Ibn Majah] ➡ It is most befitting of the Muslim to constantly ask Allah by this supplication, especially in our times where depression and anxieties have become widespread. Supplications from the Qur’an & Sunnah Shirk is of two types: 1) Major shirk - this means ascribing to someone other than Allah that belongs only to Allah, such as Lordship(Ruboobiyyah), Worship(Uloihiyyah) or in His Names and Attributes( As-ama’ was-Sifaat). Doing this takes the person out of Islam. This is the worst sin, because it will not be forgiven if a person dies without repenting of it. Allah says: “Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him...” [4:48] 2) Minor shirk is not worshiping other than Allah, rather the person does his worship to Allah but is pleased for others to see his good deeds and praise him and be impressed by him. Minor shirk does not expel one from the Religion of Islam, but it causes a large deficiency in Tawheed. ✏ Minor shirk can be categorised into: 1) Riyaa - wanting to be seen by people, thus one shows off his good deeds to others. 2) Sum’ah - wanting to hear the people speak well of him and give him high repute. To be firm upon tawheed (oneness of Allah) & far from shirk (associating others with Allah) is the greatest goal of the Muslim. To achieve this, one must seek the guidance and aid of Allah. Thus we ask Allah in this dua’a that He protects us from committing shirk knowingly and to forgive us if we fall into it without realising. An-Noor Al-Mubeen Project 41

Supplications from the Qur’an & Sunnah “O Allah! I seek refuge in You from the torment of Hell, from the torment of the grave, from the trials of living and dying, and from the evil trials of Al-Masih Ad- Dajjal (Antichrist/the false Christ), then he should supplicate for himself whatever he desires.” [Muslim & an-Nasaa’i] This means that we are obligated to seek refuge from these four things before supplicating with anything else 1) The Torment of Hell This is the first of the four things the Prophet ( ﷺwho is guaranteed entry to Paradise) asked Allah refuge from We are all in need to ask Allah to protect us from the Hellfire Allah SWT says: “But those who disbelieved (in the Oneness of Allaah) and denied Our verses, they will be the dwellers of the Fire, to dwell therein forever. And worst indeed is that destination” [64:10] And He describes the punishment of Hellfire: “Surely, those who disbelieved in Our verses, We shall burn them in Fire. As often as their skins are roasted through, We shall change them for other skins that they may taste the punishment” [al-Nisa’ 4:56] Indeed, Hell has been lying in wait (21) For the transgressors, a place of return, (22) In which they will remain for ages [unending]. Supplications from the Qur’an & Sunnah [any] coolness or drink (24) Except scalding water and [foul] purulence (25) [Surat an-Nabaa] 2) The Torment of the Grave The Prophet said: “Seek refuge with Allah from the punishment in the grave.” He said it twice or thrice. [Abu Dawud] The Prophet mentioned the grave punishment of the disbelievers & hypocrites, saying: “His spirit will be restored to his body, two angels will come to him, make him sit up and ask him: Who is your Lord? He will reply: Alas, alas! I do not know. They will ask him: What is your religion? He will reply: Alas, alas! I do not know. They will ask: Who was the man who was sent on a mission among you? He will reply: Alas, alas! I do not know. Then a crier will call from Heaven: He has lied, so spread a bed for him from Hell, clothe him from Hell, and open for him a door into Hell. Then some of its heat and pestilential wind will come to him, and his grave will be compressed, so that his ribs will be crushed together.” [Abu Dawud] In another narration, the Prophet said: “A non-believer or a hypocrite will say to the angels, 'I do not know, but I used to say what the people used to say! It will be said to him, 'Neither did you know nor did you take the guidance (by reciting the Qur'an).' Then he will be hit with an iron hammer between his two ears, and he will cry and that cry will be heard by whatever approaches him except human beings and jinns.\" [al-Bukhari] An-Noor Al-Mubeen Project 49
Supplications from the Qur’an & Sunnah After asking the Prophet about the punishment of the grave, A’isha (RA) said: “After that I never saw God’s messenger observing a prayer without seeking God’s protection from the punishment in the grave.” [al-Bukhari & Muslim] 3) The Trails of Living & Dying Trial of Living: One should not become attached to this world & its desires Ones heart should not become filled with ignorance & doubt of the Truth that Allah revealed to His messenger ﷺ Trial of Death: includes two trials ⬇ Occurs at the time of death – the Shaytan comes to the dying person and tries to deviate him from Islam and Tawheed (Oneness of worship) before he dies Occurs in the grave – the trials of the grave (the questioning of the angels) 4) The Evil Trials of Ad-Dajjal The greatest fitnah (trial, tribulation) on the face of the earth since the creation of Adam until the onset of the Hour will be the fitnah of Ad-Dajjaal The word Dajjal comes from a root meaning to cover; because he will cover the truth with his falsehood. He will be a human being, and his emergence will be one of the major signs of the Day of Resurrection.
