National Ukrainian costumescome a long period of evolutionfrom the ancient times till today.Historical epochs and events hada great influence on traditionalclothing of this nation. Thetraditional dress of Ukraine is fullof ornamental designs, fantasticembroidery and remarkableexposition. Even today, thenational dress of Ukraine ishandwoven and fabulouslydecorated. The embroidery is anancient practice which is appliedto the traditional dress of Ukraineand it is varied from region toregion in the country.



The traditional dress for men inUkraine was normally made withsheepskin and leather which was alsodecorated with embroidery and cords,tassels, and other accessories. The menalso wore Kontusz, a long robe, usuallyreaches to below the knees, with a set ofdecorative buttons down the front. Theelite and noble Ukrainian men alsoused a long garment, which was knownas Zupan. Similarly, a traditional pantwas also used, known as Sharovary,which was free to hips, often withassembly at the waist, collected at thebottom near the ankles.



The traditional dress for women in Ukrainecontains the ethnic embroidery and usually, itwas made of homemade linen which wasproduced by loom. In the cold winters,Kozhushanka was worn which were preparedwith the sheepskin coat. The coats varied incolor from region to region. The edges ofKozhushanka was trimmed with blacksheepskin or other differently dyed material.The married women used to wear Ochipok,which was a traditional headdress thatcovered the entire head with a slit in the backand laces that pull it tightly around the head.Similarly, Namitka is a long, thin fabricwrapped around the head and tied in theback.
