WHO IS VILLAGE BOOK BUILDERS?Village Book Buildersis a non-profit, volunteer-based organization thatbuilds libraries in rural areas around the world. They work withthe locals within that village to make sure that the libraries aresustained and the children continue to read. Their goal is to increasethe amount of books each child reads in order to give them a bettereducation and a brighter future. Not only do they organize expeditions to the different locations to buildthe libraries, they also work to get as many books as they can donated to thelibraries they are continually building. They also provide a mentorship programthat connects education professionals to the children in the village who act aspen pals for the kids.

the

problem

the solution We decided to split the team up into three different groups in order to achieve all we wanted to with VBB: Design, Photo, and Video. Within these groups, we had a list of projects to work on throughout the semester. In the end, we collected a whole portfolio combining all of the projects together to present to Tyler, the founder of VBB.

STARTING OFF THE PROJECT Starting off, we split into these three different groups, each group having a project manager who would stay on top of each project within their group. We then assigned the creative director, the person who would be looking at and approving the completed projects, and a liaison, the person who would always be in contact with the board and founder of the organization. For the first couple of weeks, we had the project managers, creative director, and liaison meet with Tyler and Moroni at VBB. We all got an idea of the types of projects they wanted to work on within each group and had an idea of what they wanted them all to look like. It then became apparent that we only really needed the creative director and liaison to meet/be in contact with VBB and they would relay the information from them to us and vicethe approach

COLLABORATING WITH THECLIENT

We started off the project having several people in contact with VBB. Wethen learned that it was better to only have one or two people from ourgroup collaborate with Tyler and the other Board members at VBB so wehad the creative director and liaison stay in contact with them and be themiddlemen of communication. A few weeks after that, we decided thatwe should only have the liaison be the only one communicating with VBBas things would still be miscommunicated and lost. That worked really well but then a much bigger problem arose: Werealized that we were spending way too much time getting approvalsback from VBB that we were wasting precious design and creative time.We also realized that we weren’t able to have the full creative capacitythat we wanted for this project because the client would deny many ofthe ideas that we liked and had. That is when we decided that it would bebetter to spend the rest of the semester doing what we thought lookedbest on the rest of the projects. We also were better about collaboratingwith the creative director to get her approval and the creative directorspent more time collaborating with our professors to get theirprofessional opinions on the projects we were working on. At the end ofthe semester, we would turn in a portfolio of all of the combined projects(and made sure to add several mockups of the projects) to the client andlet them decided what they wanted to do with it.By implementing this new system into the team, we were able to havemore time for the design work and more creative-freedom on theprojects. The different teams found that there was less pressure toplease the client and more time to do the best design work we could dowith the skills we acquired over the years of our study in the field.
