Must Be Heaven

Must Be Heaven Must Be Heaven is THE recommendation of most women I’ve met when asked where to grab a bite in Brenham. It’s got a welcoming country feel, like you’re on Main Street (well, you are). This order-at-the-counter soda shop and pie store offers lunch favorites, mostly consisting of sandwiches, which you get to see made right in front of you. I my warm turkey panini was mediocre, the lemon meringue pie was yummy, but my favorite part was all the holiday decor, the lovely people at the counter, and just being in the middle of a Texas town grateful for your business.

During my last visit, they were hosting an afternoon tea with little girls dressed up, their mothers, and teddy bears. Be sure to look at other fun events they host.

Bluebonnets Bluebonnet season is always a toss-up, depending on the weather and other factors. When they bloom in the spring, though, it’s a beautiful site and a popular one for family photos. Just driving along roads in Brenham, you’re sure to spot them. During peak bluebonnet season, you can normally see where the best patches are, because cars will be pulled off of Highway 290, getting their family photos. Just beware you’re not trespassing on private land! Google can also be your friend when trying to locate updated blooming areas.

Burton Cotton Gin Festival This annual April event is as country as it gets. The tours of the cotton gin are really interesting. The different competitions (including the bubble gum blowing) are fun to watch! Bring cash and a lawn chair.

Maifest This traditional German festival held each year is a I first learned about favorite. My favorite part? Maifest as a vendor when For $10 you get an ALL YOU I had my own business. I CAN EAT ICE CREAM really enjoyed having a wristband! Local Blue Bell booth at this event and ice cream is THE BEST! loved shopping here as well! There were many crafts and homemade food items here. A great day with music, food, and unlimited ice cream!

Lavender Festival Held every second weekend of August, the lavender festival is a celebration of the harvest where guests can do all things LAVENDER! There are tons of vendors and the Chappell Hill Lavender Farm offers lavender lemonade and a great gift shop. One a beautiful day, it’s a nice way to spend a few hours.

Windy Winery’s Annual Grape Stomp I visited Windy Winery on a weekend trip that included the Lavender Festival and other adventures. I was traveling solo so the grape stomp, though fun, would definitely be recommended with some friends! The wine tasting was limited with only small plastic thimble cups and a small tasting bar. The staff were all friendly and the scenery was beautiful.

According to online reviews, I think there might be some pitfalls to visiting depending on your preferences. I didn’t find a wine I wanted to purchase (and can usually do so) but I visited in 2010 and my affinity for wine wasn’t yet established. They also don’t allow dogs, even if you’re outside, because they have two pets of their own that are not dog-friendly. There are other wineries in the area that you may prefer more but don’t want to leave them out of my guide here.

Annual Grape Stomp - Windy Winery

Scarecrow Festival One of the biggest shopping events of the year in these parts! People from all over, especially Houston, drive in to shop alongside the Chappell Hill streets. You can find any sort of holiday or home decor, food, or craft here. Pack your patience for traffic, though!

Holiday Heritage Homes Tours In 2010 I was traveling nearly every weekend thanks to magazines like Texas Highways that featured articles and ads for local events. One such advertisement included home tours for the holidays. These annual tours are usually put on by Brenham’s Heritage Society but I’ve found some of the houses change throughout the years. Here I’ll include the homes I toured and any links that might still look active. It really is quite festive!

Giddings-Stone House and Trunk Show Most years there’s a holiday shopping event hosted at the Giddings-Stone House where you can pick up craft and food goodies from local vendors in the area. While doing so, you get to explore all over the property and see the nice holiday decor. There’s usually a $10 event fee, but I feel it’s worth it.

Pictured here: The mansion is on the national register of historical places It also has a lovely outdoor courtyard area.

Note: Pictures from the historical home tours were taken from a 2010 Sony digital camera. Please forgive low pixels and lighting issues. Still learning! Giddings-Wilkins House Though less charming than the other houses on the tour, the house allows you period examples of family life.

Wittbecker-Weiss House This smaller, one-story home has such great curb appeal when you walk up. The brightly-painted home and green shutters, along with the Christmas lights on the large porch, instantly put you in the holiday mood. This home was staged in the 90’s era & had an interesting rainwater system & backyard area that included another historical barn-type structure.

Wood-Hughes House The Wood-Hughes house was definitely my favorite of the whole trip! It was also the busiest. It was decorated so thoroughly, especially the entrance foyer with the giant chandelier. I wish I had grabbed more photos but there were many people on our tour around the house and the rooms were smaller. This is a holiday highlight!

The outdoor areas of the Wood-Hughes house was just as fun and lively as the immaculate indoor areas! Not to miss!

502 West Main St I was sceptical to visit a home with no family name, and only the address, but wow! What a beauty inside! The home is listed on the National Register of Historical Places and is one of the best decorated homes on the tour.

The Book Nook One of my FAVORITE book stores of all times! They have such fun decor, a mixture of new and used items. You can find discounts, bookish items like pins, socks, notebook, pens, walk hangings, and SO MUCH MORE!
