As a youth member of ASPC/AMHR/ASPR, there are many opportunities for you and your horse or pony to enjoy both inside and outside of the show ring. Please read through this brochure so you will be familiar with the different activities, awards and scholarships available to you. Also, note the deadlines for submitting your applications and the forms needed. Remember: your Youth Membership Card is issued once and remains valid through the year you turn 18. It might be a good idea to get it laminated and be sure to keep it in a safe place. We look forward to having you involved in the Youth Program and know the friendships you make and the experiences you have will last a lifetime! Welcome! Dear Youth Member & Parent/Guardian/Sponsor, Our organization would like to welcome you to the Youth Program. If you are new or a returning youth, we hope this manual helps you understand what we offer and how to apply for programs and awards. Any time during the year that you may have questions or ideas concerning the Youth Program, please don’t hesitate to contact any of the Youth Committee Members (you will find their contact info on next page). Our youth membership is FREE to all youths (reference Section 2.4 - Qualification of Youth Members located in Section II of the bylaws). Forms for all awards will be found on the website as well. You will find a complete list of all National Youth Awards and Activities, descriptions and requirements that pertain, and the entry forms needed for award applications. It is important that all forms are completed in their entirety and that all information requested by submitted. This information will not be shared or used for any other purpose. If there is any questions regarding the point tabulations of the announced winner of any award, those questions need to be addressed in writing to the Youth Committee Chair within 15 days of the award announcement. If not addressed within the specified time frame, the award will stand as calculated and no further questions regarding the tabulations will be considered. Award winners will also be listed in The Journal and on the website as time and space permits. All award entries become the property of the American Shetland Pony Club, Inc., and may be used for breed promotion. The Youth Committee reserves the right to cancel, change, or expand any or all youth programs as needed. This manual replaces and renders void all previous editions. Youth Program Core Values Becoming Stars Inside and Outside of the Show Ring The Youth Program encourages and promotes STAR behavior. These are actions that build character, promote healthy competition, and create a welcoming atmosphere. They are actions that will prove beneficial to our youth members throughout their lives. Become a shining example: S how encouragement and praise to others T reat others with compassion and courtesy A ccept wins and losses gracefully R espect Show Officials, others and yourself Throughout the year, adult members will be watching for STAR behavior from our youth and while these traits are ones allmembers should practice regardless of reward, those youth members noticed for shining extra brightly may receive special recognition.

May 1 Application Deadline T-Shirt Design Contest Sponsored by ASPC, Inc., Youth CommitteeAward Description:Youth members may enter the contest by submitting a design to be used on the TeamT-Shirts at the ASPC Congress and AMHR Nationals. The Youth committee will chooseone design for Congress and one design for Nationals. Winning entries will be chosenby an impartial judging panel chosen by the Art Chair. The purpose of this contest is toencourage the creativity of our youth and provide them the opportunity to share theirtalents. The competition is open to all youth members. The winner(s) will receive at-shirt with their design concept and a commemorative award of the Youth Committee’schoice in recognition of the winning design. The design will be used on the current yearteam shirts. The winner(s) will receive their award(s) at Congress or Nationals. If theyare unable to attend either national show, their awards will be mailed to them. Allentries will automatically be submitted into the Creativity Contest held at the annualNational Convention.How to Apply:Submit artwork on an 8 1/2” x 11” paper (or scanned electronic equivalent), along witha Youth Awards Cover Sheet by May 1st. Winner will be notified of the contest resultsby the contest chair. Art is encouraged to be of original content, not derived frompublished sources.

June 1 Application DeadlineSCHOLARSHIPSShetland Miniature Show Pony ScholarshipSponsored by ASPC, Inc., Youth CommitteeAward Description:Possible three scholarships to be awarded each year – one ASPC, one AMHR andone ASPR. Applications must be made by a current member or past youth member witha current adult membership (must be in Jr. High/Middle School or Older and not toexceed 21 years of age). Former Youth member must be currently enrolled in highereducation and a current adult member of ASPC/AMHR.Members may only win eachscholarship once and only one in a current year. The scholarship, in the amount of $1500,is to be used to continue education. The scholarship may be used for tuition, books, or anyother educational expenses. Youth Committee Chair and the Youth Committee Memberin charge of Youth Scholarships will select knowledgeable outside judges to review theapplicant’s essays and choose the winners. Priority will be given to those planning topursue education in an equine related field and to those already accepted to highereducation. Spelling, grammar, neatness and actual content of the essay will be factorsin the selection process. These funds will be paid directly to the school upon receipt ofverification of enrollment. Scholarship recipients will be contacted by the National Officefor necessary information and the official presentation, if winners are able to attend, will beat the banquet held at the National Convention.How to Apply:Submit a completed Awards Cover Sheet and essay by June 1. The essay should discussyour involvement with the American Shetland Pony Club, Inc., and how this involvementand your love of Shetlands/Miniatures have impacted your life. Also include how youplan to stay involved in the equine industry. Three character references will need to beprovided along with the completed Cover Sheet and essay. See the Cover Sheet for moreinformation. Application Cover Sheet must be mailed (or emailed) to the National Officeand postmarked on or before June 1 of current year.NOTE: Please send letters of reference with the application, not just the name andcontact information. June 1 Application DeadlineYEAR END AWARDSAudrey Barrett Classic Shetland Youth AwardSponsored by ASPC, Inc., Youth CommitteeAward Description:This award was started by the late Audrey Barrett, of Arenosa Pony Farm. Youth mustshow a registered Classic Shetland Pony at officially rated shows to qualify. There are16 possible awards presented each year – one in each of two age groups in each of theeight Areas. Age groups are 12 & under & 13 to 17. Winners will be selected based on theessay submitted. Winners will be contacted by the Youth Committee Member in charge ofAwards and an award will be presented at the National Convention during the SaturdayMorning Hall of Fame Breakfast. If the winner(s) are unable to attend, the award will beshipped to them.How to Apply:Submit a brief biography along with the application form on or before June 1. Andyour choice of one of the following performance classes: halter obstacle, hunter, jumper,obstacle driving, pleasure driving, country pleasure driving, roadster, or versatility.Costume is not an eligible class. You may choose your best performance class for eachshow and your choice may vary from show to show. There are possible two awards eachyear – one division A Miniature and one division B Miniature Youth Horse of the Year.Winner may choose color and size of jacket.How to Apply:Submit completed point tabulation sheets along with a Cover Sheet to the AmericanShetland Pony Club, Inc., Youth Committee Postmarked (or electronically sent) on orbefore Dec 31st following show year. December 31 Tabulation Sheet Deadline YEAR END AWARDSAMHR Youth COOL Showman of the YearSponsored by JoMiKo FarmsAward Description:Created for the AMHR Youth COOL classes. Points to be tabulated from COOL classesoffered at sanctioned AMHR shows. If no youth COOL classes are offered, Open COOLclasses may be used to establish points. The youth must show the horse for the points tocount towards this award. Youth does not have to show the same horse in every class.There will be one award per year. Award is a jacket embroidered with the winner’s name,the year and the AMHR COOL Youth Showman of the Year. The winner may choose thecolor and size of the jacket. In the case of a tie, the winners will receive identical awards.How to Apply:Submit completed point tabulation sheet along with a Cover Sheet to the AmericanShetland Pony Club, Inc., Youth Committee postmarked (or electronically sent) on orbefore Dec. 31st. Points to be tabulated on youth handler in the followingclasses: halter mare/gelding, fine harness, roadster, and pleasure driving. The youthmember must show the pony for the points to count for this award. Youth does not have toshow the same pony in every class. The actual award to be decided by the sponsor. In thecase of a tie, the winners will receive identical awards.How to Apply:Submit completed point tabulation sheets along with a Cover Sheet to the AmericanShetland Pony Club, Inc., Youth Committee Postmarked on or before Dec 31st.Applicants are responsible for recording the classes entered and the placing earned onthe tabulation sheet. December 31 Tabulation Sheet DeadlineCOMPANION PROGRAMYouth Horse Companion ProgramThe Youth Horse Companion Program was created in order to give the youth who doesn’tparticipate in sanctioned shows an opportunity to work toward an award by sharing theirpartnership with a small equine (parades, nursing home visits, educational exhibits, etc.). How to Apply: 1. The youth must be a member of the American Shetland Pony Club, Inc., organization. (which is comprised of ASPC, AMHR, ASPR, NSPPR, ASPIR) 2. The equine must be registered with the American Shetland Pony Club, Inc., (ASPC, AMHR, ASPR, NSPPR, ASPIR) 3. The equine must be owned by either the youth or a family member OR the horse may be leased by the youth or their family members through following the organization lease rules (refer to the Official Rule Book). 4. T his award is based on one youth and one horse as a team completing activities which promote small equine. 5. Youth may submit more than one Team. This award may be earned concurrently with another Team. 6. Points are awarded per Youth/Equine Team. 7. Points can be accumulated from year to year for each Youth/Equine Team. 8. L evels of Achievement: Level I: Fifty Activities. Youth/Equine Team will receive an award and a certificate. Level II: 100 Activities: Youth/Equine Team will receive an award and a certificate. Level III: 150 Activities: Youth/Equine Team will receive an award and a certificate. Their story will be published in The Journal when space is available. 9. Once Level III has been attained, the Team will be recorded as achieving the Youth Horse Companion of Excellence Award. 10. O nce a Team has earned this title, the youth and small equine as a team are no longer eligible to earn this award again. However, either youth or small equine can be part of a different team. 11. T he youth must keep records of activities such as parades, workshops, nursing home visits, displays, demonstrations, etc. 12. Activities and Dates must be listed on a worksheet. 13. T he cover sheet must be signed by a parent or guardian.

December 31 Tabulation Sheet Deadline14. Worksheet may be duplicated as needed.15. Promotional activities that can be used are varied. If there is an activity not listed that you feel should be included, please contact the Youth Committee Chair.16. The winners will be notified by the Area Youth Committee Member in charge of Awards. There will be an award presented at the National Convention during the Saturday Morning Hall of Fame Breakfast. If winner is unable to attend, the award will be shipped to them.17. In the event the youth’s companion horse dies, another horse/pony can be substituted on the Team. In order to substitute, a statement stating the horse’s death must be attached to the award submission along with the replacement horse’s registered name and number.

December 31 Application DeadlineMEMORIAL AWARDSBob Roudebush Sr. Memorial ShowmanshipSponsored by ASPC, Inc., Youth CommitteeAward Description:Based on points of Youth who apply for this award, with the award going to the youthwith the highest points of those who apply in each of two divisions – Classic/FoundationShetland and Modern Shetland. Award may be won in multiple divisions during the sameyear and may also be won more than once. Award is based on the Youth member pointsand multiple ponies may be counted.How to Apply:Submit completed point tabulation sheets along with a Cover Sheet to the AmericanShetland Pony Club, Inc., Youth Committee Postmarked on or before January 31st.Actual award to be determined by sponsor. In the event of a tie, winners will receiveidentical awards.Lowell Boone Memorial Showmanship AwardsSponsored by ASPC, Inc., Youth CommitteeAward Description:Based on points of youth who apply for this award, with the award going to the youth withthe highest points of those who apply in each of two divisions – Division A Miniature andDivision B Miniature. Award may be won in multiple divisions A & B during the same yearand may also be won more than once. Award is based on the Youth member points andmultiple miniature horses may be counted.How to Apply:Submit completed point tabulation sheets along with a Cover Sheet to the AmericanShetland Pony Club, Inc., Youth Committee Postmarked on or before December 31st.Actual award to be determined by sponsor. Wicke Memorial AMHR Lead Line AwardSponsored by Jack & Merry Wicke, River Oaks Farm Award Description: Based on points earned by youth who participate in AMHR Lead Line classes. High Point winners selected from applicants in each of the eight Areas of the ASPC (provided there is a participant in each Area. Actual award to be determined by the award sponsor. Award is based on the Youth member points and multiple miniature horses may be counted. How to Apply: Submit completed point tabulation sheets along with a Cover Sheet to the American Shetland Pony Club, Inc., Youth Committee Postmarked on or before December 31st. In the event of a tie, winners will receive identical awards.Sara Tennant Memorial AMHR Youth Jumper AwardSponsored by Debra Tennant-Green in Loving Memory of her daughter, Sara.Award Description:Based on points of youth who apply for AMHR Youth Jumper classes, with award goingto the high point winner in each of two divisions – Division A Miniature and Division BMiniature. Awards to be determined by point tabulations. Award may be won in multipledivisions during the same year and may also be won more than once. How to Apply: Submit completed point tabulation sheets along with a Cover Sheet to the American Shetland Pony Club, Inc., Youth Committee Postmarked on or before December 31st. ASPC/ASPR Congress - Youth ContestsCONGRESS ACTIVITIESJunior JudgingThe purpose of this program is to provide our youth with abetter understanding of how to adequately identify positiveconformation and performance traits in horses and ponies.Individuals who have expertise in evaluating and rankinghorses and ponies according to specific criteria will bevolunteer judge mentors and help our youth to expand theirknowledge in this field.Participation is open to any American Shetland PonyClub, Inc., youth member but must be pre-entered onthe Youth Activity form. Points will be awarded for eachcorrect answer. Awards will be presented to the three topscoring participants in the Jr. Judging competition in the 7& Younger, 8 to 12, and 13 to 17 age groups at the ASPCShetland Congress Awards Ceremonies. In the event of atie, winners will receive identical awards.Youth TeamsChampion and Reserve Champion Team Awards provided by 24/7 Farms,Paul Cotter Family. All other awards provided by the Youth Committee.This activity was created to promote teamwork and create new friendships. All youthexhibitors at the Shetland Congress and Miniature Nationals are placed on teams atrandom prior to the show by the Team Chairperson.The pre-entry form MUST be completed allowing input of correct T shirt size. If ayouth does not wish to be placed on a team, they must also notify the Youth ShowChair prior to the show.Youth can earn points for their teams by participating in a variety of activities. EarnedTeam points will be recorded and team awards will be presented during the awardspresentation at the show. In the event of a tie, winners will receive identical awards. ASPC/ASPR Congress - Youth Contests CONGRESS ACTIVITIESColoring ContestThis is a fun activity for the Youth during the national show. During check-in at thebeginning of the show, each youth will receive an age appropriate coloring page. TheYouth will color the page (crayons are provided) and turn it back in to the Youth Table bythe deadline set forth at the show. Before the awards ceremony, the coloring pages will bejudged. The coloring pages will be judged on originality and neatness.There will be three age divisions: 7 & Under, 8-12, & 13-17.In the event of a tie, winners will receive identical awards.Awards will be presented during the youth awards ceremony.Equine Quiz BowlThe purpose of this program is to provide our youth with a better understanding of howto adequately identify positive conformation and performance traits in horses and ponies.Individuals who have expertise in evaluating and ranking horses and ponies accordingto specific criteria will be volunteer judge mentors and help our youth to expand theirknowledge in this field.Participation is open to any American Shetland Pony Club, Inc., Youth Member butmust be pre-entered on the Youth Activity form. Participants will be divided into teamsaccording to age at the descretion of the Moderator.Questions are broken into three age groups: 7 & under, 8 to12, and 13 to 17. Points willbe awarded for each correct answer. Awards will be presented to the three top scoringparticipants. In the event of a tie, winners will receive identical awards. ASPC/ASPR Congress - Youth AwardsCONGRESS AWARDSASPC/ASPR Congress Youth Sportsman AwardsAward Description:These awards honor youth who display the highest level of sportsmanship, willingnessto aid fellow exhibitors, preparation of their animals/equipment for the show ring, care ofanimals/equipment at the show, friendliness and courtesy to fellow exhibitors, during thecurrent ASPC Shetland Congress. AMHR Nationals - Youth Contests NATIONALS ACTIVITIESColoring ContestThis is a fun activity for the Youth during the national show. During check-in at thebeginning of the show, each youth will receive an age appropriate coloring page. TheYouth will color the page (crayons are provided) and turn it back in to the Youth Table bythe deadline set forth at the show. Before the awards ceremony, the coloring pages will bejudged. The coloring pages will be judged on originality and neatness.There will be three age divisions: 7 & Under, 8-12, & 13-17. Awards will be presentedduring the youth awards ceremony.
