The Felixstowe OpenIt all started back in 2010. Myself and Gaffer ran a very popular sports forum, The Suffolk SportsForum, and both played for The Cork in the local darts league. We weren’t very good at playingbut both knew we were pretty decent organisers. So we got my brother Rory involved and decidedto stage a darts event. WOW!!!! The first event back in 2010 was a tad interesting. Almost 200people turned up to play along with another 200 to watch. In a venue that holds 250. Whoops.Anyway we managed to learn from the issues raised after the event and, in my opinion, we knowput on a damn good event which has gone from strength to strength.A big thanks to all our helpers over the years:- Dobbin, Tom E, Mad Al, Kit Kat Jones, Birdy,Shane, Swanny and any others we have missed.A word from Gaffer From the 2012 event which saw Andy Meikle crowned asI count myself as honoured to be involved in the FDO. Having not champion.really lived up to my own darting expectations helping to run thetournament gives me a chance to still be involved. Working with From Left to Right: - TerryVerso, Hooks, the team & sponsors makes a very long, hard day Sweeney (DB Darts), Andyworthwhile. Meikle, Rory (Hooks), Gaffer and VersoRory’s ViewNot being a sportsman I discovered a sport I could play(not very well) was darts it was from here I knew I wouldnever get far in a competition but enjoy being a part ofthe Felixstowe Open working not only with the rest of theorganisation team, the sponsors and the venue to deliverFelixstowe’s biggest and best sporting event.Dobbin’s DiatribeI enjoy the Felixstowe Open as it brings the dartingcommunity together and enables people to share theirdarting exploits over a beer. It hopefully also shows thatthe FTDL and super league can all play together nicely Highlights for Verso include:- Getting a proud feeling when seeing Felixstowe Open players dowell in the pro game. The likes of young Ryan Meikle, Aaron Fairweather, Rhys Haydn and BillyHolmes have all been in pro events and all played in our youth tournament.Above all though it’s the people I’ve met along the way. I’m now going to name a few then get into bother for missing others! Kev Harris, Andy Meikle, Steve West, Paul Hale, Badger, TheMolds, The Belly, Splatt, Gadge (that game against Westy in the only prelim back in 2012 wasworthy of a final) and of course all the boys from Felixstowe who regularly support the event.
The Main SponsorsThe D B Darts has been trading in the Clacton Covered Market since January 1998. DaveBarnes, a well known local dart player decide to offer a service to the local dart leagues. Whenit first opened this specialist stall had one oche, one display cabinet and other services includingengraving, key cutting, fishing and snooker repairs. In 2006 Dave became very ill and neededthe help of friends such as Terry to keep the stall going. Sadly, in November 2007 Dave lost hisbattle with cancer. The stall was left to Terry and I in January 2008 to continue providing a service to the localdarts community. We registered the name D B Darts in memory of a great player and his lovefor darts. Today, we are no larger in floor size but have revamped the area to include two fullsize oches, having 4 times the stock on to the walls from floor to ceiling and in 3 displaycabinets. In addition, we offer trophies and awards. The moment you walk in our stall, you'llthink that you've just been transported back to a time to when dart shops were in every town.By supporting the sport of darts with our wide range of stock including vintage, we know wecan meet most needs of our customers. You've actually stumbled upon the best of both old andnew, all in one stall. Celebrities of darts can be seen visiting our unique stall for personalservices such as re-pointing and fine tuning their game.Sharon Sweeney Everyone involved with The Felixstowe Open would like to thank Terry and Sharon for their continued support. They have been with us since day one and we don’t think the event would have been so successful without their support. They are more than just Main Sponsors. They are friends.
