JANUARY & FEBRUARY 2018 LETTER TO THE MEMBERSHIPLETTER TOTHE MEMBERSHIP Season’s Greetings MAC Members, This time of year is an opportune moment to give thanks to all those who fill our days with comfort and joy, as well as to be thankful for all of the blessings we share. As a volunteer leader at the MAC, this time of year has also been packed with a monumental workload resulting in major changes that will shape the future of the Club. For my part, I am very thankful. To the very best management team – Ryan, Adam, Brad, Chef Larry, Maikel, Emily,Nadia, Tori, Monica, Louie, Joseph and Doug. Thank you for always going the extra mile to make the MAC aspecial place for us to bring our families and our friends to enjoy. Thank you.To the very best staff – bartenders, fitness/athletic crew, admin, wait staff, front desk team, accounting, etc.etc. – your day-to-day commitment in making the Club run often goes unnoticed. Thank you.To the very best members – Thank you for making the Club what it is. Without members, sitting in the steamroom drinking beer, playing basketball, enjoying the rooftop and/or MACs or just meandering around ourbuilding wouldn’t be so special. I’ve enjoyed spending this past year with many of you enjoying the very bestthat the Club has to offer. Thank you.To my fellow volunteer Board and committee members – did we log some hours this year? I am blessed tohave worked with such an engaged and passionate board in 2017. You all put in many hours beyond the callof duty to get the club to the point it is at. Many thanks for your dedication and steady voice of the members. You are woven into the fabric of what the future club can and will be. Thank you.To the future business partners of the MAC – Tony Janowiec and Josh Jeffers. You two have taken a “leap offaith” in us and we are taking a “leap of faith” in you. Faith, along with a solid operating plan, best-in-classpeople and some timely capital, will serve as our guiding light as we navigate through the next 24 months.Your partnership and willingness to invest in the vision of the Club and its future is admirable and I amthankful our paths crossed. Thank you. And to everything and everyone else I’ve neglected to mention in thisnote, Thank you! After many months of discernment, business planning, strategic planning and due diligence, the Club finallyhas determined a path to lead us not only toward recovery, but to true prosperity. Over the next severalmonths we will learn more and more as our plan comes together and decisions are made. Though all ofthe details are not yet determined, know that your future home will be best-in-class. From F&B outlets, toathletics, to event space, to our management team and staff – the Milwaukee Athletic Club will once again beTHE premier private Club in the country, and I trust it will be a place to be proud of. Please join me in gettingon and staying on the ‘MAC truck’ through its overhaul. It will be worth the wait. From and to everyone at the MAC – THANK YOU!Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year.God Bless,A. David Kriete 5President -- MAC Board of Directors

In Memory of Art Brazy Long time MAC member Art Brazy recently passed away, he was 95 years old. Throughout club history we have had many colorful members, without question Art Brazy was one of them. The unofficial leader of the EMHAC (Early Morning Horses Asses Club) was a gruff, cigar smoking, fun-loving member who began coming to the club in the 1950s. Everyone knew him and you knew you were his friend when he greeted you with a profanity and insult. If you were lucky enough to attend one of the legendary EMHAC breakfasts you may have witnessed a routine very much similar to a Don Rickles show. He would call out each individual in a room of 50 with a personalized witty observation or insult that was also very funny. No one ever took offense, they loved it and everyone loved him. Of course he would welcome a good insult or gag as much as he’d give it. Not to mention, everyone who knew him could relate a humorous story throughout their friendships with him The other side of Art Brazy is a very kind and generous man who really cared about everyone. That is why he was most loved. I’m sure we speak for all in saying his passing is like a part of the MAC is missing but always able to live on in our memories.6

MAC MEMBER SPOTLIGHT The classes at the MAC {Ruthie Weatherly}are fun and challenging Member Since 2016 Ijoined the club about a year ago as a supplement to my Ironman training. My husband has been a member here for many years. I attend the noon strength and conditioning class as it fits perfectly into the middle of my day. The classes at the MAC are fun and challenging, we are outside all summer, which is a great way to enjoy the lakefront as many days during our short summer as possible. I find the instructor, Josh, to be very motivating and I enjoy the company of all the other members who regularly attend class as well. The reason I like the MAC is the location and staff. Everyone is helpful and kind, and since I am a lifelong eastside resident the location is perfect. I am looking forward to all that will come with a new refreshed MAC, I know there will be a lot of exciting new things to enjoy about the club. 21

JANUARY & FEBRUARY 2018 MACHISTORYDuring 2017, Club Life featured Olympian sprinters-hurdlers-weightlifters who wore MAC blue andwhite uniforms, enabling our club to win twelve medals and take third in overall standings at the 1904St. Louis Olympic Games. In this edition, we feature the locally-raised administrator who seemed to beat the center of so many sport opportunities in his lifetime. We introduce….WALTER H. LIGINGER—A Sport Leader for the AgesBy Dr. David J. Waters, Viterbo UniversityArelatively unknown athletic administrator at the turn of the 20th century – Walter Henry Liginger (1861-1931) was born in Milwaukee, raised in the neighborhoods along Van Buren Streetnot far from Milwaukee Athletic Clubhouses, andultimately made his mark with the club, as well asin distant sporting circles. In his illustrious, 40-yearcareer, the power he wielded with regional and nationalpositions of athletic power truly were at the forefrontof international sport administration.Walter was born to Johann B. and Dorothea Liginger, The Candle: WALTER H. LIGINGER (a)immigrant parents with roots to France; Ligingerbusiness interests were “wholesale apples, cider, vinegar,” so Walter likely developed physical strengthhoisting grocery products off the boat docks at theMilwaukee River, while learning the negotiating skillsof his entrepreneurial family along the commercializedand lively Water Street. He attended Markham Academya college preparatory school (which was later renamedMilwaukee Academy, at Oneida/Wells and Van BurenStreets). From a club membership in the 1890’s, Liginger rose to President of the “Milwaukee AthleticSociety” from 1896-1899 when it was housed on the two upper floors of the Light Horse SquadronArmory (on Broadway, north of the present MAC Clubhouse). During his term the club wasrenamed the Milwaukee Athletic Club. 23

JANUARY & FEBRUARY 2018 MAC HISTORYIn the early-1900’s, Walter Liginger served as Chairman of the 5-man Athletic Committee for theMilwaukee Athletic Club and actively began a process of recruiting local athletes to compete asAmateur Athletic Union-affiliated track and field athletes. University athletes were voted in as“athletic members” and competed on MAC teams in national meets. Several of these big meetswere held locally, featuring these sponsored athletes in high-level AAU competitions, whileshowcasing Schlitz Park, the State Fairgrounds, or Exposition Hall (before 6,000 spectators). It was just this diligent determination which resulted in the organization of an MAC team of approximately 20 athletes, administrators, and instructors who traveled to Francis Field the site of the 1904 Olympics. Ultimately, one of Liginger’s greatest successes, the team’s accolades included: (a) a top sprint-man winning 3 gold medals, (b) the first African-American medalist, (c) a strong-man winning two medals in weightlifting, and (d) a team gold medal in the Tug of War! A caricature of Liginger wearing a dapper suitcoat and undersized top hat, while carrying two armload's of athletic figures, gave him an administrative, yet comical, air that ran during the week of the 1904 1904 Cartoon Caricature (b) Olympic Games (Cad Brand’s Weekly Review, 1904). Furthermore, Walter H. Liginger’s resume included:President, Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) (1902-1904); Chairman, Olympic Committee (1904);Olympic Committees to Athens, Stockholm, and Antwerp (1906, 1912, 1920); Chairman andCommissioner, Wisconsin Athletic Commission (from 1913); and First Commissioner, NationalBoxing Association (now World Boxing Association) (from 1921). He passed away at age 70 at St,Mary’s Hospital, survived by wife Emma, two daughters, and two sons.In a glowing eulogy written in the Milwaukee Sentinel (1931, July 19), Ronald McIntyre stated:“Liginger’s name always was mentioned in tones of respect…everyone recognized his honestyand his ability…a power in amateur athletics…identified with everything pertaining to sports…would not stand for any deviations from the amateur code. He was a strict disciplinarian andwatched over track and field athletics with an eye that never missed a thing” (p. 7).We hope, with this article, that recognition may be forthcoming for this impressive Milwaukee-native who parlayed his sporting wisdom and psyche, while striving to be an arbiter andcustodian of amateurism. He fully deserves greater acknowledgment in the annals of athleticadministration.----(a) close-up image, from The Candle (February 1921, p. 21) and (b) cartoon caricature fromThe Candle Weekly Review, 1904.24
