The more that you learn, the more you will grow.” This Wisdom Garden Series aims at helping the child better understand himself, his surroundings and the interactions he makes on a daily basis. The books aim at instilling good manners, values and a sense of deep-rooted culture and tradition within the child, through stories, life skill lessons and general knowledge modules. Respect The Differently Abled Hi my little friends, I, Brainy Bunny, have a wonderful story to share with you from my big bag of stories. There was once a little boy, named Robin, who loved to run. He ran like the wind. He always ran faster than all his friends. One day, Robin went with his parents to meet his aunty and uncle. They took the car to visit his aunty and uncle. But, on the way, there was an accident and Robin got hurt. His parents rushed him to the hospital. They tried everything, but Robin lost one of his legs. Robin could not move his right leg. For many years, Robin was sad. He would sit at his window and see all his friends play. One day, his mummy told him a story about another young girl. This girl had no hands but had learnt to paint using her feet and mouth. When Robin asked how the little girl was so brave, his mother told him she did not lose hope. She did not let herself feel 5

like she had no hands. Instead she learnt how to work with her feet. From that day on, Robin decided if he could not run, then he would try another sport. He took up swimming. He would swim every day and he got better. One fine day, a famous coach heard of Robin’s story. He took Robin under his wings. He trained Robin very hard for more than a year. Finally, Robin took part in a big swimming race, where to everyone’s surprise, the “boy with one leg” stood first! Robin succeeded because he did not let his disability stop him from living his life. Do you know that just like the Olympics, there are PARALYMPICS held for differently abled sports people around the world?” “In the 2016 Paralympics in Rio, India’s differently abled sportspeople won 4 medals.” Mariyappan Deepa Malik Varun Singh Devendra Thangavelu Bhati Jhajharia 6

“Let’s try something funny. With your class teacher and friends take out 15 minutes in your day. Close your eyes and do not speak a word. Try to focus your attention on your breathing. With each breath going in think of all the good things you have done, think of all your good points. And with each breath going out think of all the things that you should let go, like your anger or laziness. Try this simple exercise every day for a month. 7

Tree of Tales II: Don‛t Cheat Hello my smart friends, let’s enter the Magical Garden where the Tree of Tales has some wonderful stories to share with you. There was once a greedy and dishonest man known as Paul. Paul was a shopkeeper and often tried to cheat his customers for more money. One day, Paul lost a bag of 50 gold coins. He went mad looking for it. He searched high and low for it. Others soon found out that Paul had lost a bag of 50 gold coins and in spite of knowing Paul’s nature they decided to help him. A few days later, a small girl happened to find a bag of coins stuck between the wall and a chair right at the back of the shop. She immediately took it to her father, who was happy that she had found his master’s money. He made sure Paul counted the 50 gold coins. Paul was a greedy man. So, he declared that the bag had 75 gold coins and that his servant had stolen 25 coins from it. Their fight reached the local court. At the court the judge heard both sides. 24

He asked Paul whether his bag had 75 coins and Paul said ‘yes’. The judge then said that Paul had lost a bag of 75 gold coins. Thus, this bag could not be his. And he ordered the daughter and her father to take the bag of coins as a compensation for their honesty. “Don’t be like Paul who lost what he had because he wanted more. Live honestly and do not cheat.” I have a fun project for you. Try it amongst your friends or in the class. The next time someone does something good for you, do not just say ‘thank you’. Instead try and pay it forward. I mean, if someone does something for you, you in turn go and help someone else. Then tell him not to thank you but he should help someone else in turn. Try making a chain of how many people you and your friends can help through this simple project. 25

Tree of Tales- Unity in Diversity Let me tell you a tale about a robot. He was the best, most perfect robot who lived in a land of robots. Most other robots were older models than him and as a result they were slower and not so great as he. This made our Robot feel somewhat superior to other robots, excepting those that were the same model as him. He believed that there should be a land where only robots as perfect as him existed and none others were allowed to live there. One day, he happened to come across a large yellow door in the middle of the street. Curious he went to open it and to his surprise, he found another city on the other side of that yellow door. There was a city filled with robots as perfect as him. He decided to live there. 44

However, he began to dislike the place after a few weeks. He realized that since all the robots were exactly the same, life had become boring. Every robot in his old city was different, some were better and some were slower; but they all had both good and bad points. It made life different and fun. Soon after, he began looking for the little yellow door he had come through. Once he found it, he gave a final farewell to what he once thought to be a perfect city and walked back to his old city and life. “And that is why my young friends, it doesn’t matter who your neighbours are or where they come from. What matters is that our qualities make us unique. Each of us has a different story to tell and this makes us all more interesting. 45
