The Tree of Tales (Story I): The Magic Ticket There was once a little boy named Jack. Jack came from a very well-to-do family. Now, little Jack did not know that differences were made in the world between the rich and the poor, the haves and the have-nots. Jack did not know how to discriminate among his friends. But as the years went by, Jack would see the way his parents treated the house maid, the cleaner, the helper, the cook and Jack thought, “Well, if I am rich that means I am better than those who are poor and I have a right which they do not have.” One day, Jack went to watch a movie he had been wishing to see for a very long time. However, Jack reached late and as he reached the ticket counter, Jack saw a poor boy buying the last ticket for the show. He got very angry and threw a tantrum . He told the poor boy that he should get a chance to watch the movie and demanded the child give him the ticket. When the poor boy explained that he too had been saving up to watch the movie, Jack yelled some more and told him that he was richer than the boy so he had the right to watch the movie. An old man heard this and came over. He smiled and handed over a ticket to Jack, saying he was right and he should watch the movie. Jack smugly 5
took the ticket and went to take his seat. But as soon as he sat down and the movie started, something funny happened. Jack vanished from his seat and was transported into the movie. And throughout the movie Jack played the role of a little boy who had poor parents and a string of bad luck. The movie 'Jack was made fun of in school', did not have friends, had to work to support his brothers and sisters and was treated badly by others. Just when Jack was about to give up on life and was extremely sad, a smiling man, in fact the same man who handed him the ticket, came and magically turned Jack’s life around. Jack was grateful to him and as he hugged the man he was transported back to his seat. Jack blinked and looked around. He was sitting in the theatre and no one had realized that he had just disappeared and reappeared in his seat! For the rest of the movie, Jack kept glancing at the poor boy and felt terrible. He could not understand what had made him behave this way. But, Jack decided that from that moment on he would not discriminate amongst people based on how much they had. He went over to the poor boy after the movie and apologized. The boy shrugged, smiled and accepted his apology. The two boys walked out of the theatre as friends. 6
Choices Life is never the same for everyone. We all face troubles and we all share our joys. When you grow up, some of you might become artists, some might become doctors or engineers, while some might do something in service to the nation- Just like these people The one thing each of these people has in common is their chance. Doctor Engineer Painter Army Officer to CHOOSE. They each CHOSE the professions they wanted to be in. Sometimes, however people do not get a chance to choose. Have you seen children working on streets or in shops? Even though this is banned, children are still made to work rather than study. Child labour is not something a child has chosen. Similarly, people working as maids, cleaners, rag pickers, garbage collectors do not always choose the jobs they are doing. Sometimes, their choices are limited and they are forced to do such jobs. 7
Jobs like working in mines, cleaning toilets and drains, collecting dead bodies, etc. These jobs do not need any skill or training. Why do you think the child works? Do you think these people are happy doing these jobs? If these children were educated rather than made to Rag Pickers Garbage Collector Child Labour Maid work, do you think it would have a positive effect on their future? As children, it is your duty not to discriminate or make fun of those who have lesser than you. It is your duty to help your classmates and friends so that they too may have a chance to make choices, just like you. 8

The Tree of Tales (Story II): Don’t Give Up There were once, two little mice who were friends. Their friendship was an unusual one. While one mouse, Percy was cultured, pampered and used to all the comforts this world could provide; his friend, Darcy was “weird” in Percy’s opinion. They both shared a wonderful house filled with comforts- a warm bath whenever they wanted, hot food, soft feather beds and a warm insulated house. While Percy would snuggle in his bed with a book and a hot cup of chocolate, Darcy was always up to some new gimmick. Instead of having a bath with hot water, Darcy started using cold water to shower. Rather than having cheese, which was so abundantly available, Darcy tried eating cabbage and leeks. Percy found this weird and asked Darcy why he was turning away all these comforts. Darcy simply said that he wanted to see if he could survive without all the comforts. And he encouraged Percy to try the same. Percy however, turned away from this “madness”. Sometime in the winter, it began snowing heavily and would not stop. The mice were snowed in and could not get out of their home. They could not even did a tunnel out of their house. 12
Days passed and the snow did not let up. Soon, they were out of food and the apartment had begun to get very very cold. Darcy suggested they should try and dig their way out, otherwise they were going to starve to death. Percy reluctantly agreed, but the minute his feet touched the cold snow he refused to dig. He did not care if he died, but he could not fight through that snow to save his life. While Percy gave up and waited for death, Darcy’s will power kept him going. He did not give up and kept on digging even when his legs had turned blue. Percy lay down and closed his eyes. The next time he opened them he thought he was in heaven with an angel staring at him. However, it was only the nurse at the hospital. She explained to Percy that his friend had dug for 3 days straight and reached the hospital. There he told them where to find Percy and fainted. He lost a few toes and an ear to the cold, but he did not give up. It was then that Percy realised that all that training Darcy did of having a cold bath, eating cabbage, sleeping on the cold hard floor, was all to keep his mind and will strong. And it was only because of Darcy’s will power and “never-give-up” attitude that the two of them were alive today. 13
