Preface “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more you will grow.” This series aims at helping the children better understand themselves, their surroundings and the interactions they make on a daily basis. The books aim at instilling good manners, values and a sense of deep-rooted culture and tradition in the children, through stories, life skill lessons and general knowledge modules. In today’s fast-paced world, very little time is dedicated to the children’s growth and development due to work pressures on the family. The books promote the teachers to develop a healthy relation with the children, and encourage parents to read with them. The children can develop a sense of trust and improve their interpersonal skills through a system of joint interaction with their parents and teachers.

Story I: Follow in Your Parents’ Footsteps Hi, my little friends, I Brainy Bunny have a wonderful story to share with you from my big bag of stories. Kyle lived with his mummy, daddy and grandpa in a lovely home near the countryside. Kyle loved to talk with his grandpa and listen to the stories of grandpa’s younger days. But grandpa was getting older; and with old age he was getting clumsy. He would spill his soup or milk on the table, drop his spoon on the floor and make a mess at the dining table. While Kyle understood that grandpa was tired and weak, his parents had started to get angry with grandpa. They made grandpa sit on a small table with a wooden bowl for dinner every night, while they all ate at the main table. Kyle could see that grandpa was very sad. One day, Kyle’s father saw him playing with some pieces of wood. Father asked Kyle what he was doing. Kyle replied sweetly that he 5
was making wooden bowls so that when he grew up he might make his parents eat from the wooden bowls, the way his father made grandpa eat. Hearing this, Kyle’s father was shocked and instantly regretted his decisions. He realized what a big mistake it had been. Just like he took care of Kyle, his father had taken care of him all his life, and now when he was old and needed help, Kyle’s father was impatient and hurtful towards grandpa. That evening, the entire family requested grandpa to sit with them at the dining table and eat dinner. They all sat together laughing and sharing stories. Every time grandpa spilled any food or dropped his spoon, mummy and daddy patiently helped him clean up. Moral: Always try and be positive. Always make time for your grandparents and elders. They love us and are always looking out for us. It is important that we spare some time and learn from them. Learn a new word- Regret- [verb] To be sorry for one’s actions or words. 6
There are people in our society and community who help us out. They help the poor; they help the old, the sick and all those in need. But they ask for nothing in return. They do not help for money but because they want to make a difference. And these people are called community workers or social workers. From Mother Teresa and Swami Vivekanand to our very own APJ Abdul Kalam, social workers are spread out far and wide to help the needy and the downtrodden. Mother Teresa Swami APJ Abdul Vivekanand Kalam Learn a new word: Downtrodden- people who have been badly treated. 7

Story II: The King & the Pauper Hi my little friends, I, Brainy Bunny have a wonderful story to share with you from my big bag of stories. There was once a very arrogant King who thought that he was the smartest man in the whole world. He also enjoyed it when people praised him. But he would become very angry if someone else was praised in front of him. In this King’s kingdom, there lived a pauper. The pauper had lost all his riches, his family and his fame because of a bad accident. But that did not make him bitter or angry. The pauper was also a very wise man. He lived in a small ashram with other sages. Soon, news spread far and wide of the pauper’s wisdom. The king heard about the pauper through his ministers and was not pleased when they praised the pauper. He said to himself, ‘How could a man so poor and shabby be so wise?’ So, the King decided to defame and shame the pauper in front of the public. He sent an invitation to the pauper to his castle. The pauper accepted the King’s invitation. He met the King in front of a large crowd, in the castle. 12
The King was holding a black bag with his hand inside the bag. He asked the pauper, “What do you think I am holding in the bag?” To this, the pauper smiled and replied, “You are holding a bird inside the bag.” The King was surprised that the pauper knew what he was holding. But the King calmly asked the pauper, “OK, you are right. But is the bird dead or alive?” The King thought if the pauper said the bird was alive, he would kill the bird in the bag and show him that he was wrong. And if the pauper were to say that the bird was dead, he would show them all that the bird was alive. It was a win-win situation for the King. However, the pauper only smiled and said, “The bird is in your hand, great King. You have to decide whether your hand will keep it alive or kill it!” Saying that, he left the castle. Moral: Just like the King, we all have choices to make in life; choices that can harm or help others. We have to choose. Learn a new 113 word- Arrogant- [adjective] a word used for describing someone who has a lot of pride and thinks he is the best.
For the longest time, adults have always taught children right and wrong. But what happens when adults lose the way and set bad examples for the future generations. Children, never think small of yourselves. You have the power to change the world. If you don’t believe me, look at some of your peers. Malala Yousafzai is the youngest person to win a Nobel Prize. She fought for the education of women and children in northwest Pakistan, a place where the militants did not let women study. She wanted to study and become the prime minister of her country. For all her effort to try and study and fight for education, Malala was shot by the terrorists when she was only 15. But she survived and she still stands and fights for the education of women and children in Pakistan. Mohammed Manan Ansari, 18 years old, helps fight for other children’s rights to education in India. He was 8 years old, when he was sent to Mica mines to work. Thankfully, his parents helped him leave that work and take up an education with the help and support of others. Today, he works to help other children to get away from mines and get an education. Xiuhtezcatl Martinez is a 18-year-old boy, who helps protect the environment in Colourado. He is part of a group that helps to clean and protect the air, water and earth and has been speaking about saving the environment since he was 6 years old. Story III: Differences are important Hi my little friends, I, Brainy Bunny have a wonderful story to share with you from my big bag of stories. A philosopher was once travelling through many towns and cities across the country. On his way, he stopped at a small town for a few nights. There, he heard of a young boy who was famous in the town. Everyone thought him to be a very smart and clever young boy. The philosopher met the boy and was happily surprised to find that the boy was indeed very knowledgeable and intelligent. They spoke about many things and the boy was also humble enough to accept the philosopher’s thoughts and ideas. However, the boy went silent, when the philosopher said, “It would be so much better if the entire world were equal.” Finally the boy replied, “I do not think the world would be a better place if every inequality and irregularity were removed. If the strong tall mountain were flat, if the trees were flat, where would all animals and birds live? If the village head had the same authority and importance as a madman, we would not know what to do.” 40
The philosopher left that village with a lot to think about. The boy was right. Moral: Our world is vast and with many many differences. Each difference has its own importance. It is not the differences that are a problem, but are constant attempt to compare. Each of us is different. No one is better or lesser. We should respect one another. Learn a new word: Irregular: (adj) something that is not regular, even or balanced in shape or pattern. Do you know that there is something known as Gross National Happiness? It is the unit of measuring success in Bhutan! Bhutan does not see how much money its people are making. It sees how happy they are! 41
Disabilities are a state of mind. When we call someone handicapped, we forget that we all are in some way handicapped. Handicaps are nothing but shortcomings, and they can be mental, physical or emotional. What is important is the strong points. And that is why we call those with physical or mental handicaps as “differently abled”. From Girish Sharma, a one-legged badminton player to Ravindra Jain, the national singer, every differently abled person has overcome his shortfall and become great in his field. Sudha Chandran is an Indian actress and classical dancer. She does not have a left leg, but puts on a plastic foot and dances. Preeti Srinivasan was a Under 19 cricket team captain, until she became paralyzed and could not move any part of her body below the neck. However, she started her own company- Soulfree, which helps other women with disabilities. Dr. Satendra Singh lived with polio all his life. He has worked hard for many years to make public places in our country easier to use for people with disabilities. Because of his hard work many ATMs in the country now have ramps. Arunima Sinha lost her leg when robbers pushed her off a train, but this young lady became the first woman amputee to climb Mount Everest. There are many, many more such strong human beings who have overcome their handicaps and disabilities to achieve much more in life. 42
