prefectorial board On the 9 February 2015, we celebrated the Investiture of the Anglo-Chinese School (Independent)’s 55th Prefectorial Board. The Prefects’ investiture was a symbolic moment for our 74 prefects as we pledged our loyalty to the school and promised to do our best to set a good example for our fellow ACSians, carrying on the legacy left behind for us by the previous 54 generations. For the newly invested prefects, this marked the start of a momentous journey that would enable them to them to grow and develop themselves into servant leaders with godly and robust character. For the Year 3s, the investiture was an exciting start to the upcoming term. For the Year 4s, this will be our final year in the Board. The investiture gave us the opportunity to look back at what we have accomplished as prefects and to continue nurturing the younger ones as they embark on their journey as student leaders. The prefects also managed to organize school events such as Sports Night 2015, JuneAct, Prefect Selection Camp, Operation Smile and, in collaboration with the Student Council, co-organized ACSFactor, ACares, Teachers’ Day Celebrations and Custodians Day. Over the past year, we have had much to celebrate and thank God for – only by His grace has the Board been able to move in the direction that it had planned and cope with the challenges that have come their way. As familiar faces leave and fresh ones arrive, we trust that God will continue to carry the Prefects through the years ahead in their endeavours to be a blessing to ACSians. To God be the glory, the best is yet to be! robotics God has continued to bless the Robotics Club throughout the 2014-2015season. From 1 - 4 December 2014, the Robotics Club sent three young teamsto participate in the Asia Pacific Robotics Championship held in Dongguan,China. The teams competed against other teams from China, Hong Kong andHawaii, making it to the quarter-finals. Although we were unable to defendour Asia title, the experience of overseas competition was nevertheless a veryvaluable lesson for our juniors in preparation for and to gauge their readiness forthe World Championship. This year, our Club sent four teams to participate in the Vex Robotics WorldChampionship held in Louisville, Kentucky from 15-18 April. This competitionis still the largest and fastest growing robotics competition in the world, withmore than 15,000 students in 850 teams from 27 countries participating thisyear. After four gruelling days of competition against the best teams in the worldfrom the U.S., New Zealand and China, our teams made Singapore proud byqualifying for the divisional semi-finals and quarter-finals respectively. Our final competition for this year was the Singapore Vex RoboticsChampionship held on 22 and 23 June, where we sent eight teams to representthe School. We competed against schools such as Hwa Chong Institution,NUS (High) School of Mathematics and Science and School of Science andTechnology, and did the school proud by achieving a near clean sweep of theawards. Our teams attained the Tournament Champion, the Robot SkillsChallenge Champion, the Programming Skills Challenge Champion, theTertiary Division Champion and the coveted Excellence Award, which is givento the overall best team across all events. In addition, we were also first, secondand third runners-up for the Championship, as well as first-runners up for boththe Robot and Programming Skills Challenge. The slew of awards bodes wellfor the future of the club and is truly a testament of our commitment to quality. We look forward with anticipation to next year’s 2016 Vex RoboticsWorld Championship. We hope we will triumph and bring back the WorldChampionship trophy! To God be the glory, the best is yet to be!Isaac Lee4.11 Stephen 257

shaw library With the increased emphasis on ‘core’ CCAs to gain entry into Junior Colleges, we have seen a sharp drop in our Library CCA, which is a ‘second CCA’ for most students. However, despite a leaner force of only 21, our student-librarians continue to provide the necessary service to school. We have a team of ‘supporting cast’ who are students fulfilling their VIA requirements. These ‘temps’ help us with the onerous task of making the library more accessible by keeping up with the shelving of books and tidying up of the shelves, while our student-librarians took on the onerous task of keeping a hawk eye on the maintenance of the library books, magazines, newspapers and other reading materials. We facilitate students in their examination preparations and revisions in the months of April - May, July, August, September, October and November. We have extended our operating hours from 5.30pm to 9pm on Mondays to Thursdays and 5pm to 9pm on Fridays. Special Activities for 2015 included a 1-day Training-cum-Farewell camp to welcome new student-librarians and bid farewell to our graduating Year 4’s and 6’s. This year, the Library also bids farewell to Ms Jessie Tan, our Chief Librarian and welcomes our new librarian Mr Leo Joon Meng. student council “WalkingtheTalk”–lookingback, ourjourneyasaCouncilhasbeenchallengingbut immensely fruitful. From the beginning, we built on the successes of past batches.Guided by our aim of being role models and servant leaders, all of us have certainlybeen changed by our experiences with the Council. To strengthen both school spirit and pride, we actively organized a plethoraof events and activities to cater to different needs of the school and individual. Byorganizing both Teachers Day and Custodians Day 2014 concerts, we soughtto celebrate the key individuals who had such a large impact on our growth andeducation. This was followed by the Graduating Leaders Appreciation Dinner 2014(GLAD), a night where memories of leadership were shared and graduating Prefectsand Councillorsthankedfortheirsincereservice.PromNight2015 also sawthe classof 2014 leave with grand flair, musical acts and fond memories. Alongside this came our own welcome for the incoming juniors – Orientation2015 followed by the talent-search ACSFactor 2015. Thereafter, months ofpreparation culminated in the inaugural Sports Night 2015, a night of house spiritand competitions. AC Cares, a new initiative to reach out to the Dover Communitywas spearheaded with the Interact Club and was a change in direction for our school. This was quickly followed by one of the defining events of ACYLC 2015, an outreachprogramme to the community in areas such as Telok Blangah and also the foreignworkers in our school. WhilewepassontheACSianmantleofchangetoourjunior batch,we continueto grasp firmly onto the values that we treasure dearly and the school experiencewhich we will never forget. We leave satisfied knowing we have done our best to servethe school, and look forward to the generations after us who will strive to do the same.Jonathan Neo (9th President of the Student Council)6.18 Patmos 259

acs independent stage 2015 has been an incredibly memorable year for ACSIS as our drama Teachers-in-charge Mr Brian Connor and Dr Angela Chew productions ranged from the horrific and grotesque to the comedic. Executive Committee Amanda Lim (6.15 Judea) We started the year with our regular annual production, Assortments, in March. President Bryan Choo (6.16 Macedonia) Assortments showcased a spectrum of rough theatre genres with all items scripted, Vice-President Dhameem Ansar (6.07 Ephesus) directed and performed by the members of ACSIS. This year, we ventured into Secretary Yeo Zhixin (6.03 Bethlehem) a greater variety of plays and also had a short play interwoven among the various Treasurer Tay Jing Hui (6.12 Jericho) performances. As with the previous years, Assortments managed to captivate our Logistics Wee Yeong Xin (6.08 Galatia) audience. Welfare With its riveting twist of events, Family was chosen to be performed at the school inaugural Performing Arts Night Festiva with an extended script which did not fail to add more terrifying detail than there was originally. Yet another milestone of the year was the ACSIS production of Salem, presented in collaboration with the ACSDC drama family. A fascinating script by playwright David Calcutt on the historical Salem witch trials, the play bares the ugliness of the human condition to the bone as characters—minister and ordinary townsfolk alike—abuse religion in a ruthless manner and wreaking havoc in the village. Needless to say, Salem was a production to remember and will remain in the hearts of both cast and crew for a long time. Our successful execution of 2015’s drama productions would certainly not have been possible without the steadfast support of our teachers-in-charge, Mr Brian Connor and Dr Angela Chew. We would like to extend our gratitude to them for allowing each member to embark on a journey of self-discovery and improvement once they join ACSIS and also cultivating in them a deeper love for theatre. 2015 has indeed been an eventful one for ACSIS and we trust that ACSIS will continue to Live Life Centrestage in the years to come. BADMINTON 2015 has been an eventful year for the Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) Badminton Team. Both the ‘B’ and ‘C’ Division teams emerged as first runners up in the South Zone Badminton Championships and second runners up in the National Inter-Schools Badminton Championships while the ‘A’ Division team also emerged as first runners up in the National Inter-Schools Badminton Championships. The Badminton season began with the ‘B’ and ‘C’ Division South Zone Championships. Through the display of excellent skills and steadfastness, the two divisions fought their way to the Zonal Finals where they faced their formidable rivals, Raffles Institution. Despite our players displaying outstanding performances in the Zonal Finals, the two teams unfortunately had to settle for the first-runners up position. After a long hard-fought season, the two teams eventually attained the 3rd position in the National Inter-Schools Badminton Championships. The ‘A’ Division Team sailed through to the Finals, winning every match but they had to settle for the first runner up position. The success of the ACS (Independent) Badminton Team definitely lies in the hard work and support of our teachers and coaches. As such, the team would like to thank our teachers and coaches, Mr Samuel Sim, Mr Khoo Kian Teck, Mr Nunung Wibiyanto and Mr Chong Koi Choy for not only their tireless coaching and guidance, but, also for molding and shaping us to be ACSians of robust character. There are things more importantthan just trophies and our own glory. We played our hearts out with whatever talentsGod have given us and did our best. It also builds trong bonds between teammates 2015 was a thrilling year for the ACS(Independent) team. After having gone through intense trainings last year, the team doubled in size when the Year 5s came in this year. The remainder of the year was spent on intense training sessions and improving our skill sets in preparation for the final competition, The Inter-Junior College Ultimate Championships (IJCs). The two day competition was held on 6 and 7 June, where the ACS (Independent) team was split into two. Our “B” team was made up of Year 5 students, and as this was their first competition, allowed them to gain exposure and experience. The team utilized all that they had been taught and put up a good fight against their opponents which included teams who had played the game for twice as long as they had. Our “A” team comprised pre-dominantly Year 6 students who had been together since the beginning of 2014. The team played both hard defence and offence, utilizing 2 years’ worth of synergy and skills come in 5th out of 22 teams, a marked improvement from their 9th placing last year. While the competition pushed the entire team to our physical and mental limits, both teams relied drew support from each other. Braving the rain and going up against strong opponents, the ACS(Independent) Ultimate team showed no signs of fear and pressed on, even in the face of injury. Being a part of the Frisbee team has been a wonderful experience. Most of us came together as strangers with a passion for the sport but we evolved into a family that played and fought for each other and that is the greatest takeaway the team could have hoped for. We would like to thank the Senior Administration for their support as well as our teachers-in-charge for their support throughout the years. tennis The tennis team achieved the historic grand slam in 2015, bringing home the gold medal across all three ‘A’ , ‘B’ and ‘C’ Divisions. This feat has never been accomplished since the institution of the inter-school national championships . Despite being put at the forefront on multiple occasions, our players stepped up to the platter and delivered on the court when it mattered. Our tennis team works firmly amongst the ideals of hardwork and perseverance, remaining professional and humble while we were favorites, and never giving up in the face of adversity. Tennis, is an individual sport, but in individuality, there is teamwork, and the tennis team fully embodies everything team spirit stands for. Despite the uncertainty of the future, we would always feel comforted to know that our teammates had our backs through the highs and the lows. There was no personal gain and the hours and hours spent on the courts, every sweat, every breath, was all for the solitary cause of fighting for each other and fighting for our school. It is through these values that have molded our tennis players to grow from boys to men of character. Above all, the friendships made and hard battles fought are relationships and memories that we will hold dear to. Will Angkawidjaja 5.05 Deuteronomy288
