Fall 2021 Thank you for taking the time to read through the first edition of our newsletter. The newsletter, designed and created by CTE Secretary Mindy Trejo, contains a glimpse of the amazing things that happen in our department every day. For our students and teachers, every day is a new adventure that is filled with possibilities as they progress through their chosen program of study. As the CTE Director, I am blessed to have a front-row seat to the transformation that takes place in our students as they move from their freshman year Principles classes to their senior year Practicum experiences. In many cases, students enter into our program with an interest in a career and leave with the skills they need to be successful in those careers. Transformation truly does start here! With Thanksgiving drawing near, we have so much to be thankful for in the Seguin CTE department. Most importantly, we are thankful that we have all of our students back in class where they can engage in the hands-on activities that are such an integral part of CTE curriculum. Students are back in the Welding Shop, the Cosmetology salon, the Construction shop, and the labs of all of our other programs, interacting with one another and getting valuable feedback from our teachers, all of whom are experts in their field. It’s a Great Day to be a Matador! #1Heart1Seguin Scan Code for listing of CTE Dept Social Media

Construction Trades Mr. Soefje’s Construction Trades classes balance hard work with fun in the classroom. In September, Students in both the Construction Management class and the newly introduced HVAC/REF class took their 1st National Center for Construction, Education, and Research (NCCER) Module certification exams of the year. NCCER is the training, assessment, certification and career development standard for the construction and maintenance craft professionals. In October the students participated in a pumpkin carving contest with a twist. They had to be innovative and carve the pumpkins with tools found in the workshop. Prizes were awarded to the first, second, and third place winners.

Construction Trades Keeping with the #OneTownOneTeam belief, Construction Trades students embraced the spirit of giving and community involvement while helping out with a local food bank food drive. Linemen from Seguin Utilities (and former SHS students) came out to talk to the Construction Trades classes about career and education opportunities within the city. While here they brought along some equipment and provided demonstrations on the power of electricity and arcing faults.

Cosmetology A job well done! Nearly 70 Cosmetology students have completed the requirements to receive their Barbicide Certification. This certification signifies that the student has met the industry standards for infection control concepts for a salon. Cosmetology 1 students completed a lesson on infection control practices using candy to recreate common types of bacteria.. Cosmetologists must be able to list and identify the types and classifications of bacteria as well as define bloodborne pathogens and explain how they are transmitted. This is all in effort to keep the cosmetologist, salon, and clients safe. Cosmetology 2 students were given the task of designing their own color wheels. Color wheels aren’t just used in art class. color wheel is used by hair stylists to manipulate color as it appears in their clients hair. Knowing the complimentary colors on the color wheel can help a stylist to achieve the perfect balance in a client's hair. Cosmetology 2 students welcomed three cosmetologists from Great Clips into the classroom. They spoke to the students about career opportunities, offered trade tips and techniques, and shared stories of their experiences working in a salon and sitting for the state licencing exams..
