The Age Gilded By Sydney Ellen Bass The gilded age was the era of economic andpolitical growth. This was a time of huge difference between the wealthy and the poor. It created a nation transportation and communication network.

Immigration irishThe Irish immigrants left the harsh rural areas lifestyle they were having tolive in. The immigrants were extremely unprepared for the industrializedand urban centers,so they were moved in it the United States.

Immigration pt2They were extremely poor and only had money forthe fare of their passage. They all settled in reportsof their debarkation. Over time the total of IrishAmericans grew drastically. They exceeded theentire population of ireland. They had so manypeople there they didn't know what to do withthem, let alone know where they were all going tosleep.

Immigration pt. 3Some pull factors where it was closer, cheaper, better employment, eventhough there was very little employment opportunities where you weregoing, they were better than where you were before.Your wages were higher,and it gave them a chance to have a better life. Push factors for the irish arefailed potato crops, famine, and cultural persecution by the english.

Problems due to urbanizationHousing was a huge problem that they faced. There were not many places forthem to sleep, and or houses available. And when they did come available itwas crowded because they would all try to cram 30+ people in a house meantfor 6. Traffic and transportation was also another problem in the city andso the people couldn't get to their jobs so there was a lot ofunemployment.

Leisure activitiesNot all americans had leisure time during the Gilded age. But when they didhave they played baseball, saw movies, played soccer, went to the circus, andplayed and watched football games!! These were all very fun and excitingactivities for the people to do in their free time. Yet they had very little of itthey always tried their best to incorporate it into their day to day lives to add alittle fun into there days.

NativismNativism is a huge issue during the gilded age. As the immigrants began tocome to america, they were treated with disrespect, hatred,anddiscrimination. They favored native born americans over immigrants.

Tammany HallTammy Hall was a political organization founded in1786. It was a executive committee of the democraticparty political machine. It played a major role incontrolling the New york city politics. It had a lot otojobs, but the biggest one was to control the democraticparty nominations and political patronage inmanhattan from the mayoral victory of fernando wood

Tenement housingThey all had to crowd into the houses that were extremely tiny. Because theyexceeded their population limit they had to all squeeze into small homes.They had very poor living conditions, which made it very hard to keep thearea clean, but they did everything they could. Most of the time they didnot have running water.

Social Darwinism Social darwinism was the leading philosophy during the Gilded age. It ranked people by their capabilities. So they are saying that the only the strongest and fittest will survive, and the people who are less capable and who are weak will fail. The social darwinism also supported laissez faire.

political machines and party bossThe political machines is a organization that supports the local businesses.They receive rewards for their efforts. They choose their members by theirmoney, jobs, and high leadership control. This organization is meant totry and help the people get the votes of their electors on voting day.

Gospel of wealthThe Gospel of Wealth was a book written by AndrewCarnegie. It promoted the idea of philanthropy. It alsodescribed the responsibilities of the wealthy people. Hesaid that the wealthy should devote themselves todisturbing there money in a good responsible way tohelp the society in which they live in. He wanted themto continue to do this until the day they die because hefeels it's the right thing to do

ReformsThere were many reforms during the gilded age but a few of them areMckinley tariff act which increased the taxes on imports. Next is theSherman Silver Purchase act, which the government would purchase a lot ofsilver each month with money. Another reform would be the ShermanAntitrust act, which tried to help there not me monopolies.

Realism in art Art in the nineteenth century was a very large country of differences between the wealthy and the extremely poor. When people did their paintings and drawings, etc. you would be able to see their perspective in either realities of life that they were currently going through.

Populists and the populist partyThe populist and the populist party was organized in St. Louis in 1892 torepresent the farmers agrarian workers. They aimed to improve theconditions for the workers. It helped bring farmers from the west and thesouth for support operating the left wing of american politics. It set criteriafor them to follow with banks, and railroads.

Building of skyscrapers and public transportationThere were many skyscrapers built during this time period. Theywere extremely difficult to build. In this time period there was amajor jump in industrial growth, and money that came toamerica. Which made getting the supplies needed to build theskyscrapers easier, with this great growth in wealth the workerswere able to get the job done faster and more efficiently.
