Coach Dotres Message What was the first thing you thought about when you woke up this morning? What was the last thing you thought about before your head hit the pillow last night? Do you know that recognizing things you are grateful for in the morning can change your mindset all day? When thinking about what you’re thankful for before bed, you create a calming effect on the brain and suppress the day’s worries. One study found that writing grateful thoughts and replacing any negative emotion words has positive results for the individual. It does not happen overnight. The study found that positive strides were made in the first four weeks. However, if the person could continue writing what they are grateful for over twelve weeks, the change in attitude was significant. I do the best I can to instill an attitude of gratitude in my teams. When we can get players to a place where they are grateful for the opportunity to play a game, stay healthy, and build positive relationships, it affects the team. Players treat their opponents better, treat the referees better, and treat their teammates better. The same happens in life. When we are grateful for our opportunities, we treat everyone around us with a grateful heart. CCSA PAGE 7

Player Letter To: Mom & Dad From: Your soccer playing son I am so happy that you have allowed me to play soccer and I am very grateful you are making the financial and time commitment to allow me to play the sport I love. I am asking for a few more things from you as we make this journey together. Please help me to always remember to “honor the game.” There are 5 areas you can help me with, hopefully we can do this together. We can use ROOTS to help remember what I need to work on. R-rules, O-opponents, O-officials, T-teammates, and S-self. We can work on respecting these five areas. I want to always play by the rules, my coach is helping me with that. I need to practice sportsmanship and respect my opponents. You can let me know when I play fair and show good sportsmanship. We should never yell and talk back to the officials, they are there so we can play. They are human and will make mistakes. It is better for my game if I remember to let the bad calls go and focus on my game and how I respond to adversity. I really need to work on being positive with my teammates and not criticize them when they make mistakes. We are just starting our premier soccer journey and we have so much to learn, help me support my teammates and make those around me better. And finally, I need to focus on myself. I need to practice my skills and come to practices and games with a positive attitude. You can help me with that. In conclusion, you can help me by recognizing 2-3 positive things I do in a game and compliment me after. If I talk about soccer, then talk to me about it. If I don’t feel like talking, just wait awhile, I will. Support my coach and my teammates, they are all trying to help me. Thank you, Your son CCSA PAGE 9
