EDITOR'S Dear Reader, NOTE I know. I know you're busy. How can you not be, in a world that moves at warp speed? But, would you not want to stop and breathe for a moment? Everyone is too busy being busy lately and it hurts me to see how little we live. Nobody is stopping us from spontaneously planning, falling in love with the streets, a bit more each day. Nobody is stopping us from creating art, exploring things we like, rediscovering ourselves, trying a new cuisine or simply existing, being in the moment, observing, breathing. Continuum is a something that all of us stopped in the moment for. To create. Its something that gave all of us immense joy- in taking time out, writing for it, planning for it, spending hours editing it. We did it as a venture to give you the slice of life from a student's perspective, to give you a peek into what college will probably be like- especially for the first years. We did it to make a difference and most importantly we did it out of pure passion. So take your time out today. Sit back, and go through our issue. Because, inside there's something for everyone. You might just end up finding something- that one thing that makes you take a moment and wonder. That one thing that makes you think. Cheers, 2 Team CONTINUUM.

BEAUTOPIA Natural beauty products have been the talk of the cosmetic market for a long time now. From famous drug stores to fancy department store counters, we see sections saying, “ALL NATURAL” or “ORGANIC” or “NATURAL”. The labels on various products, for example, from moisturizer to serums and face masks seemingly try to convince that organic and natural products are the same. But here’s a fact: technically speaking- the word “natural” has no regulatory meaning in the terminologies listed under the FDA. Although the term “organic” is regulated by the USFDA and means that the products are free of synthetic pesticides, fertilizers and other non-organic substances. It’s important to note that natural and organic products aren’t necessarily safe. “Is natural beauty product a myth?” These products can still cause allergic reactions and skin irritation. Even worse, some organic products are not as effective or don’t produce the results they claim they do, such as anti-aging, brightening, toning, acne treatment or moisturizing. I like to say that poison ivy is natural, but I definitely don’t want it in my daily face cream. Other ingredients such as lead, arsenic, etc are all- natural, so just because a product says it’s natural does not indicate that it’s safe. Many beauty and personal care products do require some preservatives and it is difficult, though not impossible, to find natural options that will work well enough. Harmful ingredients to avoid while buying beauty and cosmetic products: · Sulfates · Talc · Parabens · Lead · Phthalates · Formaldehyde · Toluene · Alcohol ~ Hetvee Mody 4

UNLOCKING Nobel Prize in Chemistry GOD MODE 2020 What is CRISPR-Cas9? Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentier for their pioneering role in developing programmable molecular scissors using the CRISPR-Cas9 system. CRISPR or Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats is a peculiar kind of DNA sequence, a quality that’s used by bacteria to instantly disable invading viral DNA by cutting the viral DNA using a protein named Cas9. The chunks of viral DNA are then stored within the bacterial DNA to act as an alert for the future. The CRISPR system essentially has two components, the Cas9 protein and a single stranded guide RNA (sgRNA). The protein contains two nucleases, while the sgRNA is responsible for binding with the viral DNA. While working on CRISPR-Cas9, Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentier's team realised that the ability of the system to make precise double-stranded cuts in the DNA could be used for genomic research. The inherent potential of Cas9 and sgRNA to be manipulated and programmed into manipulating and programming DNA was enormous. The precision could allow us to deactivate, remove or even replace genes. This enables us to ideally cure several genetic diseases previously thought to be incurable, prevent diseases before they occur, and work as a vaccine against viral DNA. Labs have been working on methods to use the CRISPR system to change patterns of gene expression as well as transcription. Another extremely interesting detail to note is that the genetic modifications performed in one cell, are maintained throughout the cell line. When used cautiously and intelligently, CRISPR would enable us to program DNA just as we program software. More to explore: But we know, with great power comes great responsibility. Could CRISPR tech work as a COVID-19 Do we know enough to take the leap and edit the vaccine? molecules that dictate the state of our entire being? Well, CRISPR and controversy: He Jiankui not at the moment. But soon, we might see diseases like AIDS, Cystic Fibrosis, Sickle cell disease and cancer become a thing of the past. ~ Shreeya Tamhankar 5

THE NEW 2020 announced its arrival with much pomp and fervour, NORMAL starting with the wildfires that ravaged Australia on the very first day, to an impending, all-out nuclear war threat that By Dhruv Gupta & followed shortly after. March sneaked up on us like that chapter you convince yourself is worth skipping before an exam, and then ends up going ‘psyche!’ on you at the eleventh hour. While the world was grappling with big issues like climate change and smaller ones like whether pineapples should even be anywhere near pizzas, little did we know that we’d be in a free-fall, headfirst, in the weeks that were to follow. Although there was a semblance of normalcy in the air at the very beginning of the month, we could feel the subtle shift as news of Covid-19 started gaining importance and cities all across the world began to shut down. What was a fleeting moment of happiness- at an unexpected holiday turned into anxious despair and a want for things to go back to normal. 7
