What is this handbook about? This year, the Ontario government released a five-year Climate Change Action Plan (CCAP) to reduce GHG emissionsreductions in the province. A variety of energy conservation programs and projects were proposed for various sectors, including transportation and residential buildings and these projects or programs will be developed and implemented over thenext five years.According to CCAP, capital investments in green projectswill be drawn from the cap and trade program revenue, which is expected to be $1.8 to $1.9B annually. Figure 1illustrates the total proposed budget allocation for each ofthe eight action areas in the plan.In this handbook, Energy Exchange has gatheredinformation on Ontario’s existing energy conservationprograms and linked them to the action areas identified inCCAP. This handbook highlights both existing andproposed programs and projects in the province at themunicipal, provincial and federal levels. When readingthrough the handbook, you can click on the programs thatlook interesting to you to learn more. You will likely findquite a few programs that are relevant to you. Byparticipating in these programs, you will be able to savemoney, save energy and contribute to the fight againstclimate change! Page 3 of 31

Glossary  Cap and trade programs (emissions trading systems) are compliance programs that assign a price to greenhouse gas emissions (based on their carbon dioxide equivalent in global warming potential) and a cap on the amount of emissions individual entities are permitted to release each year (expressed in carbon credits). Emissions in excess of an entity’s permitted amount can be offset by purchasing emissions credits from entities that are below their annual emissions cap.  Carbon calculators are used to calculate carbon footprints, which illustrate the amount of greenhouse gas emissions a subject is generating in their daily activities.  Geothermal heat pumps are heating or cooling systems that utilize natural thermal energy from the several metres beneath the Earth’s surface, where temperatures are warmer than the surface in the winter and cooler than the surface in the summer.  Green banks are green technology providers or a financial investment groups which provide technological services or financial assistance to homeowners or businesses for the development of green projects.  Green license plates are license plates issued in Ontario that designate battery or plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.  Low-carbon economy is an economy where renewable energy sources are used to replace conventional carbon-intensive energy sources, such as fossil fuels, which results in a net reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.  Low-carbon fuels are fuels that have a lower carbon content than conventional fossil fuels and result in lower greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere after combustion.  Low emission zones are areas or districts where conventional vehicles are restricted to reduce or eliminate the emission of pollutants.  Micro-grids are small-scale, intelligent electricity transmission systems that are often powered by low-carbon energy sources, connected with or separated from macro-grids, and smartly managed depending on demands.  Mixed-use communities are communities that have a combination of residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial uses. They generally refer to communities where people are able to walk or use a bicycle to access a wide variety of amenities. Page 28 of 31

 Off-road vehicles include those used in the construction, agriculture, forestry and mining sectors. They also include recreational vehicles such as dirt bikes, ATVs and snowmobiles. Proof-of-concept projects are those still in developmental stages in which prototypes are tested to demonstrate their feasibility. Renewable natural gas is a biogas which has been upgraded to a quality similar to fossil natural gas. It can be created from all types of organic waste, including sewage, can be converted into liquefied or compressed natural gas, blended with fossil natural gas in any proportion and transported via existing natural gas distribution networks. Soil carbon sequestration is a natural process by which atmospheric and organic carbon is captured and stored in soils. Solar potential mapping is used to create geospatial databases that show the average amount of sunlight a place on the earth receives and is used primarily for the purpose of analyzing the feasibility of various locations for solar power generation. Zero-emission vehicles are vehicles that do not release greenhouse gas emissions or other hazardous substances from their tailpipes. About Us!ENERGY EXCHANGE, an operating division of Pollution Probe, is Canada’s centre for energy learning. Its mission is tomeasurably increase energy literacy levels among Canadians through knowledge mobilization techniques developed andimplemented in collaboration with a network of experts on energy systems and learning. Taking a technology-neutralapproach, it promotes broad-based energy literacy on all forms of energy.Building energy literacy in Canada means building a common language for the citizens of an energy nation. Canada’s citizensare diverse, but their futures are joined by shared responsibilities: to thoughtfully steward Canada’s vast and diverse energyresources; to demonstrate global leadership in the responsible development, distribution and productive use of Canada’senergy; and to innovate best practices and technology that conserve Canada’s energy wealth and the environment for thebenefit of future generations.POLLUTION PROBE is a non-profit charitable organization that works in partnership with all sectors of society to protecthealth by promoting clean air and clean water. Its approach is to define environmental problems through research, topromote understanding through education and to press for practical solutions through advocacy. Its objective is to advancepublic policy that results in positive and tangible environmental change.Pollution Probe currently has standing programs on air pollution, water pollution, waste management and human health, aswell as special issue programs that focus on transportation, energy systems, human health, climate change and environmentaltoxins. In the development of innovative and practical solutions, Pollution Probe draws on sound science and technology, mobilizes scientists and other experts, and builds partnerships with industry, government and communities.
