The stitched branches represent a pair of ceremonial brooms similar to those worn by high-ranking members as a sign of their sacred authority. The drum evokes the sacred ngbe instrument, at the heart of the original myth. The skulls are those of animals sacri-ficed during the founding feast of the Ngbe Lodge. The thick black patina results from exposure to smoke in the House of the Secret Society.
