Hi I’m Noel. This is some of my work...

HOSPITALITY OFFICE CASHEL HOTEL KINGSWAY TOWER

S.I.T CREATIVE ARTS CENTRE SOUTHERN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY location Invercargill, New Zealand type Competition Entry role Designer & Project Lead NEW AND RE-NEW Where mathematics is to straight lines, music is to curved ones. This project is a play on the tension between contemporary and historic, where sacred space becomes reinterpreted and adapted to host a tertiary educational function. An emotive, twisting form of glass echoes the metaphoric flows of the arts, juxtaposing itself with beautifully restored historic religious architecture of St. John’s Cathedral to house the Southern Institute of Technology’s new creative arts department.

Ground Floor Plan First Floor Plan

1 BRIEF 1 ADAPTIVE RE-USE The process of arranging the complex 2 programmatic requirements set out by the Southern Institute of Technology was 2 pragmatic one. We were given a multitude of THE DIALOGUE BETWEEN uses and sizes, to be ordered within a site that contained a church. The rationale set out our HISTORIC CONTEMPORARY ordering principles in a simple arrangement - LEARNING SPACES - housed in new building PRESENTATION SPACES - housed in the old church. This set up a continual dialogue between the two buildings and spaces, where circulation was pulled through the old to new, and the church became reactivated as a powerful public space, adapted for event use. 820 m2 EXISTING CHURCH

< RE-PROGRAM GIVING NEW PURPOSE To a redundant church as a host to exhibitions & events, showcasing student work and re-vitalizing a powerful building back into the city fabric for the public. The spatial idea re-imagines the church nave as a runway, a gallery and a theatre. EXPRESSION, FLUIDITY & ARCHITECTURE PROCESS > TESTING TECTONIC Developing the architectural concept moved into exploring the tectonic relationship to the spatial character. The form and structure stemmed from the idea of EXPRESSION and FLUIDITY, and the structural tectonic is based on the notion of a twisting superstructure - a series of ribs to form the enclosure.

TH E SPACE BETWEEN > TYING THE OLD AND THE NEW TOGETHER The connection between the two buildings becomes a double volume atrium, where users are taken between old and new via an organic twisting staircase. A new first floor amphitheatre replaces a portion of roof between the two buildings to host outdoor meetings and events.

CENTR AL PARK ELLERSLIE RESIDENTIAL TOWERS location Auckland, New Zealand type Build to Rent Apartments role Designer & Project Lead status Re-Zoning Lodged COMMUNAL PODIUM A sturdy and rubust palette of masonry and glass defines three towers that orient themselves around the site, opening the NW to a shared amenity podium space. This threshold sweeps the floor plane above the parking, opening the street-scape and inviting pedestrian and user activity. This communal podium serves as space to socialize and relax with planting, seating, food and lifestyle activities, encouraging users to live outside their walls. BUILD-TO-RENT

The design reinforces this by providing a hub for living, with amenities like gyms, cafés, studios, and sporting facilities, while green open space caters to community events.

VICTORIA STREET TOWER location Christchurch , NZ type Luxury Apartments role Designer & Project Lead status Developed Design THE PLACE ECONOMY Victoria Street is primed for densification, emerging as a trendy after-work hangout with new offices supported by restaurants, cafés and bars that create a desirable destination for young professionals on the fringe of the CDB. The design caters to this demand in the market by understanding the place and user. The building provides a luxury city lifestyle while reintegrating a derelict and damaged heritage building and historic clock tower, strongly rooting the architectural identity with a landmark, creating a recognized new identity.

Central TERRACED OUTDOOR LIVING Culture BREAK MASS & ALIGNMENT History Ambiance BASE ACKNOWLEDGING CONTEXT

The aim of the development is to acknowledge and reintegrate the historic Victoria Mansions Heritage building back into the urban landscape, with a cohesive, consolidated development. The building responds through a strong understanding of place, and the target user requirements. Victoria Street has become a hub of activity, and proximity to the CBD is highly valuable. A luxury city residential offer is not only about proximity: It’s about lifestyle, connectivity and access to amenities The architecture adds value by connecting users to place, and having a triple bottom line approach to sustainability. C O O R D I N AT I O N > We have high level input coordinating structural, mechanical and fire engineers information. At ten stories the tower has considerable MEP, seismic and fire separation complexities to address. < GROUNDING THE STREET EDGE The challenge with street-facing urban units is dealing with the building grounding and how a sturdy base deals with privacy and street interface. Carried out several exploratory investigations to treat the grounding. ENTERING BETWEEN > RESPECTING THE OLD The new building optimizes the site to acheive the maximum development capacity. A deliberate recess between the old announces the entrance, while a distinct base, echoes the built form of the existing. A break in mass creates a public terrace, and acts to distinguish a new form, a contemporary dynamic facade emerging above .
