1 3 COUNTRY OVERVIEW 4 2 Egypt is a transcontinental country expanding over the northeast corner of Africa and southwest corner of Asia by a land bridge formed by the Sinai Peninsula. It is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea, Libya to the west, Gaza Strip and Israel to the northeast, Sudan to the south, the Red Sea to the east. Egypt is the most populous country in the Arab world and the third most populous country in Africa, behind Nigeria and Ethiopia according to the Medium variant of the UN World Population prospects (2017 Revision) and is ranked 14 by population size (compared to 20 in 1950). TARGET AREA OVERVIEW ASWAN GOVERNORATE The southernmost governorate in Upper Egypt, its capital is Aswan. The Aswan Governorate borders Qena to the north, Red Sea Governorate to the east, New Valley Governorate to the west, and Sudan's Northern state to the south. It has a population of 1,394,687 inhabitants (2014), and occupies an area of 62,726 km². The rate of poverty is more than 60% in this governorate but recently some social safety networks have been provided in the form of financial assistance and job opportunities. The funding has been coordinated by the country's Ministry of Finance and with assistance from international organizations. The governorate is divided into the following municipal divisions for administrative purposes with a total estimated population as of July 2017 of 1,481,446. Only 25.2% of Egypt’s population live in rural areas in Upper Egypt, Seven out of 10 poorest governorates in Egypt, are located in Upper Egypt, topped by Assiut recording the highest poverty rates of 66.7% among its population; according to CAPMAS. In Aswan, the summers are long, sweltering, and arid; the winters are short, cool, and dry; and it is mostly clear year-round. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 10°C to 42°C and is rarely below 7°C or above 45°C. NOUR EL OYOUN PERSERVATION OF CULTURAL Aswan’s position as a center of artistic and cultural innovation HERITAGE has been weakened by the exodus of artists to the capital, as well as declining tourism in the region. Nour El Oyoun wall art project aims to preserve and revive the Nubian art on the one hand, and promote inclusive local participation, on the other towards building stakeholder involvement in the development process, as well as the cultural continuity, by encouraging interest in Aswan’s traditional artistic heritage, especially through musical training of teachers, children and youth. In this way the project seeks to sustainably revive Aswan’s performing arts, enhancing social cohesion, and generating new possibilities for future employment in the tourism sector.
