FROM THE EDITOR College life isn’t easy, especially at UC Berkeley. Students often balance multiple extracurriculars, study late into the night and take heavy course loads plagued with multiple exams each semester. Fortunately, there is a saving grace, a light that shines through the end of every long day’s tunnel, something that brings communities together and satisfies everyone’s bellies: food. The Berkeley culinary scene reflects the kind of city we live in: bustling and innovative, sometimes a little spicy and home to a wide range of cuisines. And The Daily Californian is here to remind you of just that with our annual Food and Drink Guide! This year, we have compiled a variety of mouth-watering recipes and restaurant recommendations, including a home-style restaurant recommendation, a guide to the best late-night eateries and a one-pot guide to homemade meals. Food brings people together. Here at The Daily Californian, we aim to celebrate exactly that in this vibrant city that we all call home. Craving more? If you love the Berkeley food scene but are balling on a budget, don’t worry. You might not want to eat out every day, but some of your favorite dishes from Berkeley restaurants are still always within reach. How? Make them at home! Here are four meals you can make at home that’ll fill the restaurant-shaped hole in your life. SALAD FROM MEZZO Instead of spending $13 on a Veggie Delight, use fresh veggies from your fridge to make it yourself. Just combine romaine lettuce, cherry tomatoes, garbanzo beans, kidney beans, avocado, croutons and a hard-boiled egg in a salad bowl. If you’re feeling fancy, make your own croutons! Toss cubed fresh bread with olive oil, salt and pepper, and let it bake in the oven for about 15 minutes. Dress your salad with whatever you’ve got in your fridge. I usually resort to olive oil, lemon, salt and pepper. SNOODLE BOWL FROM TOS Do you have a jar 6 of soy sauce just sitting in your kitchen, begging to be used? How about sweet chili sauce? Put them to work in a homemade noodle bowl that’ll cost you approximately $8 less than going to Toss Noodle Bar. At home, saute leftover veggies and your choice of protein over the stove. Add an egg into the pan and toss (ha, ha) with some rice noodles and sauce, and voila, you’ve got a “Toss” noodle bowl.

PIZZA FROM SLIVERTo me, the best part of Sliver pizza is the sourdough crust. Pick up some pre-made INI ALFREDO FROM GYPSY’Ssourdough pizza dough at Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods, and top with your favorite Sliver-esque toppings. You know mine’s going to have potato slices and corn on it. Top with cilantro, lime and olive oil to get the essence of Sliver’s famous sauce. The best part of making “Sliver” pizza at home is that you end up with a whole pie. Box up your leftovers and eat them throughout the week. FETTUCC Fettuccini Alfredo is one of the simplest and cheapest meals you can make from scratch. To make a delicious Alfredo sauce, just simmer some cream and (a ton of) butter in a saucepan. Then, whisk in some minced garlic, salt and pepper, and let simmer for a few minutes. Finally, add a handful of parmesan cheese. Let it melt and fully incorporate into the sauce, and that’s literally it. If you’re really trying to channel Gypsy’s, add some sauteed mushrooms to the sauce before pouring it over the fettuccini noodles. Next time you’re hankering for a meal from your favorite Berkeley restaurant, remember it might be just as easy to make in your own kitchen. Usually, choosing to cook at home saves you time and money. Plus, you’ll be able to impress your friends with your seemingly professional cooking skills. Someone call Alice Waters! aa ffaallll--iinnssppired granola recipe 10 BY JAZMIN CUBILLA | STAFF

With the autumn season approaching, it seems that the world is inundated with pumpkin spice this and caramel apple that. Those of us with pickier (and perhaps more sophisticated) palates might prefer a more traditional take on the current fall o erings. For those who are seeking a simple recipe that will still bring home the flavors of fall, here is the ultimate fall-inspired granola recipe. INGREDIENTS: - ½ cup coconut - 2 cups rolled oats - ¼ cup pecans - 3 heaping tablespoons ghee (or butter) - ¼ cup slivered almonds - 3 heaping tablespoons coconut oil - ¼ cup maple syrup - ¼ cup walnuts - 2 teaspoons cinnamon - ¼ cup hazelnuts - 1 teaspoon cardamom - A sprinkle of sea salt DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat your oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. 2. Chop up your nuts, pour all other ingredients into a large mixing bowl and mix well. 3. Pour onto a large pan lined with parchment paper and bake for 10 minutes. 4. Take out the granola, and mix it a bit with a spatula to ensure everything has cooked through (be sure not to over-mix, as you don’t want to break up the clusters). 5. Then, place the granola mix back in the oven for an additional eight minutes until it’s golden brown and your house smells like autumn. 6. Wait a few minutes until it has cooled slightly and serve! It will stay delicious even if it’s left out to sit at room temperature for a few weeks. This granola can be used in endless ways: as a topping for an apple crumble, on top of yogurt, mixed into oatmeal or even as a post-workout snack. It’s the easiest way to incorporate the fall season into your daily meals! design by Labiba Amyeen . 11

BY CHRISTINA KIM | STAFF We all know that feeling at 4 p.m. when we get super hungry. It’s too early for dinner, and you already had lunch. You have to save your appetite for dinner, but you feel like you need to eat something or else you’ll faint. Here are five light, healthy and affordable snacks that will help you combat your hunger while retaining your appetite for dinner. hummus This Mediterranean dipping sauce explodes with flavor in your mouth, and it’s very healthy, too. You can dip anything in hummus to make the flavor 10 times better. Some common options are raw vegetables (like carrots, cucumbers and celery), pretzels and pita chips. These are all light and healthy, perfect for a pre-dinner snack. roasted chickpeas Chickpeas are packed with protein and various nutrients that’ll energize your body the right way. They’re great with either sweet or savory flavors, and there are so many DIY recipes out there (pumpkin spice-flavored chickpeas, cajun- flavored, caramel butter and more). Sometimes you want a pre-meal snack because you’re bored. Just a few bites of something intensely flavorful will help with this, and roasted chickpeas are great to munch while counting down the time until dinner. 12

vegetable and fruit chips Oftentimes, you feel guilty munching on chips before dinner because they’re high in calories and sodium. A healthy alternative is vegetable chips. Many stores have really good options for these chips that are low in sodium, fat and calories. You can also easily make them at home if you have an oven or an air fryer. Some favorites include sweet potato chips, banana chips and zucchini chips! chocolate energy bites There are hundreds of ways to make energy bites you can snack on, but the best ones are the ones with chocolate. You can buy these in stores, but making them at home yields the best flavors. You get to choose what goes in your snacks! These are packed with protein, fiber and good fat, so you don’t have to feel guilty enjoying these before dinnertime. peanut butter cookies All you need are three ingredients to make these delicious cookies at home: peanut butter, maple syrup and salt! (Optional: You can put flaxseeds for an extra boost of energy.) Mix these three ingredients to make your batter, and bake in the oven. They’ll taste incredibly nutty and rich. Snacking is a good way for us to energize our bodies throughout the day. Most times, meals are just not enough, and we feel lethargic. These five snack ideas are healthy, affordable and light so that you don’t have to worry about ruining your appetite for dinner. .design by Farhan Hodsesasingn&bCyaLmabbriibaaMAemadyoewens 13
