Article The Letter that showed seed of the idea of steel city Not many residents of Jamshedpur, particularly the young ones, know that a letter written on this day 117 years ago prompted the setting up of their city. The letter was written on February 24, 1904, by Pramatha Nath Bose, a pioneering geologist trained in England, and addressed to Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata who was then toying with the idea of establishing an iron and steel company in India. Bose was then working as a geologist in the princely state of Mourbhanj (Mayurbhanj), now in Odisha, and had discovered a large deposit of iron ore in the hills of Gorumahisani. “As you are interested in the development of the iron industry of this country, I have brought to your notice an exceedingly rich and extensive deposit of iron ore which I have just explored. Bose wrote to Tata in 1904. Though J.N. Tata’s son, Sir Dorabji Tata, was also exploring the possibility of setting up iron works in Dhalli and Rajhara hills near Nagpur, they gave due importance to Bose’s letter. Tata Iron and Steel Company eventually came up at Sakchi, a sparsely populated tribal village located at the confluence of the Subarnarekha and Kharkai rivers. The rest is history! Rtr. Article WILDLIFE Every year, people all over the world hold all kinds of events to celebrate World Wildlife Day. Their aim is to raise awareness of the beauty and importance of our natural world and to look for ways to protect and conserve it. In December 2013, 40 years after signing the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, the United Nations General Assembly decided to create a day to raise awareness of the world's wild animals and plants and the importance of protecting them. They decided to call it World Wildlife Day and chose March 3 as the date to celebrate it. Planet Earth is home to many, many different species of plants and animals —more than we can possibly count. It is this rich diversity and the delicate balance between all the different forms of life that make life possible on our planet. We depend on all the elements of the biosphere for all our basic needs: the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, and the energy and materials we use to make the things we need to live our lives. Each and every species is equally important. One of the aims of World Wildlife Day is to raise awareness of these facts. Bitterly, many human activities, such as mining, farming, and construction, are constantly putting wildlife. We are cutting down too many trees, clearing too much ground, and building so many roads that we are destroying the natural habitats of millions of species and putting the world's biodiversity at risk. Nearly a quarter of all species are at risk of becoming extinct in the next 50 years, and their disappearance is putting us, humans, in danger as well. There are some solutions too, and we can still save our home planet. We need to live more sustainable lives and learn to respect nature and defend its diversity. We need to push our governments to conserve and protect the natural habitats of all the species that are in danger of becoming extinct. We all need to work together to protect our planet—and ourselves. Rtr. Uplabdhi Raj Kerketta 11|THE PRIDORA | MARCH 2023
Article WOMEN'S DAY Every year international women's Day is celebrated on 8th March. This day is dedicated to celebrating women's achievements in various fields. Not specific to any country, group, or organization, this day belongs to women everywhere. Whether she is a businesswoman or a homemaker, a doctor or a dancer she is strong. This day reminds us that women constitute half of the world's population. They are supremely talented and contribute a lot to making the world a better place to live. International Women's Day also focuses on the various problems women face in everyday life. It brings attention to issues such as gender inequality, women's safety, and violence and abuse against women, and for this many women as well as men come together and be a part of this special day. This global occasion is represented by three purple colors which symbolize justice and dignity; green which symbolize hope and white which symbolizes purity. These days a lot of women are working and achieving like men and something they are even better than men but on the other they are suppressed and are not given equal opportunities like men. International Women's Day is a time that focuses on these things and brings people's attention to these serious problems. Rtr. Aakriti Toppo 12|THE PRIDORA | MARCH 2023
