National Day of Prayer Breakfast to Be Held May 4; 8:30 @ First Baptist ChurchThe first Thursday of May has traditionally been the date our nationhonors as a National Day of Prayer. A Prayer Breakfast hosted bythe Haddonfield Council of Churches with the theme, “Can WeTalk Together” will be held at the First Baptist Church in Had-donfield located on Kings Highway beginning at 8:30 AM. A panelof speakers from the Christian, Jewish, and Muslim faiths will dis-cuss the opportunities and obstacles to dialogue and the issue ofevangelism among their representative faiths. In a time when there isso much tension and hostility toward all three of these faith commu-nities this breakfast fosters a spirit of communication among thethree Abrahamic faiths.Tickets are $15 and available in the church office and can be pur-chased on Sundays and during the week in the church office. Theycan also be purchased at the Haddonfield Information Center near Kings Court. Pastor Zschech is purchasingtickets in order to reserve two tables (14 seats) for congregation members to attend, which can be paid backto the church even after the event. Please contact Sandy DeDonatis, [email protected] or 856-429-5122,if you want to reserve your seat at one of the tables. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Our Savior is a faith community that worships Jesus as our Lord, proclaims and shares God's Word, welcomes all people, serves human needs, and nurtures personal and spiritual growth through fellowship all to the glory of God.

“MOMS (AND DADS) NURTURE FAITH OUR WHOLE LIVES” By Pastor Wayne Zschech On Mother’s Day we often give our moms and/or the mothers in our lives a card expressing our appreciation for all they’ve done to shape, mold, and nurture us into the person we are today by their love and example. They showed us what selflessness looks like every time they attended to our needs first when coming home from work or an afternoon of errands before taking time to relax and tendto their own needs. They nurtured compassion and mercy in us every time we deserved a good tongue-lashing but in-stead received a calm sharing of how our actions did not reflect the behavior expected in our family. They modeled gen-erosity by their sacrificial giving of time and resources toward us and others. They nurtured respect and honor everytime they spoke to us rather at us or down to us. Moms, and dads too, nurture and model in and for us what it means tobe a loving, caring, and compassionate person in life. They also nurture and model in and for us what it means to be a disciple, a follower, of Jesus Christ. At least, that’s whatparents promise to do when they bring their child to the Baptismal font. There they promise the following; To live with them among God’s faithful people. In other words, parents promise to have friendships and relation-ships within the faith community of the church. To bring them to the word of God and the holy supper. Faithful moms and dads make worship a part of their fami-ly’s routine and discipline of living their faith.Teach them the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments. The pocket edition of Luther’s SmallCatechism isn’t just a “party favor” parents receive when their child is baptized. It is a tool to assist them in keeping thispromise so these basic tenets of our faith are as familiar and meaningful in the lives of their children as knowing thehouse rules at home.Place in their hands the Holy Scriptures. Parents don’t just give their children a Bible, they read it with them and talkabout what they just read. And nurture them in faith in prayer. In other words, parents model what it means and looks like to follow Christ andlive one’s life as a disciple whose faith impacts their daily actions as well as pray for their child’s faith and trust in God.Parents do all these things so that one day, hopefully by the time they affirm their Baptism on their confirmation day, their child may trust God, proclaim Christ through word and deed, care for others and the world God made, and workfor justice and peace. And faithful parents don’t stop there. Faithful moms and dads continue to nurture their children infaith and prayer long after they are fourteen. They continue to pray daily, worship regularly, study God’s word, serveothers, invite and encourage others into and in the faith community, and give generously toward God’s work in theworld throughout their lives. And in doing so they model for their children of every age what faithful discipleship lookslike.I write this article the day after my mother-in-law, Mary’s, death. She was a woman of great faith and nurtured her chil-dren’s lives of faith from the time they were baptized until the day she died. She celebrated the Resurrection of our Lordfrom her bed in our family room with her grandchildren through the livestream available at Christ the King RomanCatholic church as she was a life-long Roman Catholic. She desired and received Holy Communion the morning of theday she died as she had received every Tuesday since she became unable to receive weekly at Mass in person. MaryScholl nurtured her children in faith and prayer not just from their baptisms but until they graduated high school. Sheremained faithful to those baptismal promises throughout their lives until the end of hers. Thanks Mom. May all of us,mothers, fathers, and members of the faith community alike, be as faithful in nurturing the children in our lives in faithand prayer to the God who has claimed us in Baptism and joined us to the death and resurrection of Jesus our Lord. BIBLE DISCUSSION ON BOOK OF “ISAIAH” CONTINUES THROUGH MID-JUNEJoin Pastor Wayne and other intrigued Christians on either Monday nights from 7:30-9:00 OR Wednesday mornings from 9:30-11:00 for our continued study and discus-sion of the prophet Isaiah and what he shared with God’s people before, during, andnear the end of the Israelites captivity and how it still speaks to us today. Prior partici-pation in the discussion is not required and each session is designed to be inde-pendently educational and beneficial in one’s walk of faith. So even if you haven’t beenthere from the beginning, join us as we continue the discussion of Isaiah as it continuesinto the third week of June. Want to make the discussions more interesting? Bring a Jewish friend to add his or her per-spective of the same readings and stories. May 2017 Messenger Page 2

10 FAMILIES NEEDED TO BAKE COMMUNION BREADIf you were here for our Maundy Thursday Worship you may have noticed that real bread wasused for Communion. This is a practice we would like to continue for the first Sunday of everymonth when we have full Communion at the rail. Mark and Cathe Bare made the first batch ofbread but we are looking for volunteers to help with the coming months. The recipe is printed be-low and with 2 people it only takes about an hour. If you would like to help please contact CatheBare, Worship and Music Chair, 609-238-6527 or [email protected] WELL-USED, WELL-LOVED RECIPELuther Seminary's communion bread recipe has been used here for more than 25 years. It is bakedby Luther Seminary dining services staff and served as part of our weekly Holy Communion ser-vice in chapel each Wednesday. This recipe is known throughout the country as one of the best tasting and easiest to make. It'sbecome quite popular! In July 2012 Luther Seminary dining services staff baked an estimated1,900 loaves and Fed-Ex-ed them to the ELCA's youth gathering in New Orleans for their SundayEucharist!COMMUNION BREAD RECIPE: FROM LUTHER SEMINARYSift dry ingredients together three times: (important!)2 c whole wheat flour1 c white flour1 & 1/4 tsp baking powder1 & 1/4 tsp saltStir in 4 tsp oil. Set aside.Mix wet ingredients together until dissolved:3/4 cup + 2 Tbsp very hot water (minimum of 180 degrees F)3 Tbsp honey3 Tbsp molasses Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and mix well. Dough should be slightly sticky. Do not knead. Divide into four balls and flatten each into a 1/4 inch thick disk. With a knife, score the top of each loaf into eight pie-shaped sec- tions, so that the sections can be more easily broken off while serv- ing. Alternatively, you could score a cross onto the loaf. Lay the loaves on a baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Remove from oven and brush the tops of the loaves with oil. Bakean additional 5-8 minutes. Let cool.Yield: four 8 oz. loaves. Each loaf serves 60-70 people, depending upon the size of the piece giv-en. The loaves freeze well.
