PREFACE This book is prepared for Non-Formal students who take a course of the Basic English for primary education level. Students should carefully read the information provided as follow: 1. 6 Lesson 1 Greeting and Responding Concept Greeting and responding is a communication practice of social interaction in daily life. Expected Learning Outcome Learners understand that greeting and responding is a way to build relationship, and engage in interpersonal communication appropriately. Good afternoon (Used from after midday until about 6 PM) Good evening (Used from about 6PM until midnight) Good night (It is not a greeting word.) 8 Unit 2 Meeting someone new When you meet someone you don’t know, or don’t familiar with, you should say How do you do? Nice to meet you. I’m glad to meet you. Nice to know you. We often say “How do you do?” to someone you first meet or don’t familiar with. This word has the same meaning as “hi or hello” but do not require answer. Generally, we respond by saying “How do you do?”. Good morning My name is Linda. JHeorrwy dSomyitohu. do? I’m Example 1 Mr. Sam: Good morning, Mr. Jack. I’m glad to meet you. Linda : Unit 3 Greeting people you know There are 2 different forms of greeting people whom you already know. 1.Formal Greeting 2.Informal Greeting The formal Greeting often use with senior or high executive people to show respect to them. Good morning Mr.Tee Good morning Mr. Jack How are you today? Example 1 Good morning Mr. Tee. Mr. Jack: Good morning Mr. Jack How are you today? Mr. Tee: Fine, thank you. And how are you? /And you? Mr. Jack: Fine, thank you. Mr. Tee: Example 2 Susan: Good evening, Laura. How are you? Laura: Good evening, Susan. Not so well. I have a fever. Susan: Take care of yourself. You ought to see the doctor. Laura: Yes, I will. Normally, we simply say some words about weather after greeting people. For example: It’s a lovely day, isn’t it. It’s isn’t very nice today, is it? It’s nice and warm, isn’t it? It isn’t a lovely day, is it?

10 Responding to Greeting Yes, it is. Yes, it’s lovely. Yes, it’s beautiful. No, it isn’t. No, it’s terrible. Example 3 Mr. Paul: Good morning. Mrs. Mali Mrs. Mali : Good morning. Mr. Paul. It a lovely day today, isn’t it? Mr. Paul: Yes, it is. Example 4 Good afternoon, Mr. Ken. Mr.George: Good afternoon, Mr. George. It isn’t very nice today, is it? Mr.Ken: No, it’s terrible. Mr. George: NOTE 1. You should use a positive or a negative statement and follow by positive or negative question tag if you are expected the people whom you talk to to agree with you. For example: You say: It’s lovely day, isn’t it? People answer: Yes, it is. You say: It isn’t nice and sunny today, is it? People answer No, it isn’t. 2. Present Simple. S+ V1 Subject + Verb1 (+s / es) The simple present tense is used to discuss an action in the present or situation that happens regularly. For example: It’s a lovely day today, isn’t it? It’s isn’t very nice today, is it? Today is Monday.

11 Informal Greeting Informal greeting, normally use with friends or people we are familiar with. We say Hi or Hello, and follow by a common question. For example: Hi, Sam. / Hello Joe. Hi, Sam. How are things? Hello, Joe. How’re you doing? Hello, Liz. How’s life? Hi, How’s everything? Hi, What’s new? What’s up? Responding to Informal Greeting. The people you talk to may say: So so. All right, thank you. Very well, thank you. Not bad. Not much. Nothing special. Example Sam: Hello, Liz. How’s life? Liz : All right, thank you. What’s new? Sam: Nothing special. Example Jai: Hi! How are things? Porn: Very well indeed, How about you? Jai: Not so bad. Generally, we ask about people’s health after greeting. For example: How are you? How are you today? How are you this morning? How are you this afternoon?

12 Responding: If you are fine, you may say I’m fine, thank you. And how are you? Fine, thank you. And you? Very well, thank you. Responding: If we are not fine or sick, we say I’m not so well today. Not so well. I have a fever. Not very well. I have a flu. Your friend or people you talk to may say: I’m sorry to hear that. Take care of yourself. That’s too bad. 16 Unit 1 Introducing Oneself There are two characteristics of self introduction in English, those are formal and informal. 1.1 Formal Introduction May I introduce myself? My name is Somporn Wansawang. Can / Could I introduce myself? My name is Jack Smith. Let me introduce myself? I am Amporn Ploysang. How do you do? Mr. Steven. My name is Marry. How do you do? Miss Suzie. I’m glad to meet you. NOTE “How do you do.” is a phrase. We say it when we first meet. NOTE Responding I’m glad to meet you. Pleased to meet you. Nice to meet you. Nice to know you. How do you do? I’m glad to meet you, Pleased to meet you, Nice to meet you. This group of phrases can be used in a form of infinitive with to as well as gerund (V. ing). For example Nice meeting you. Glad meeting you. Nice knowing you.

17 You may tell your office location and your job after you finished introducing yourself. For example: I come from Nakorn Pathom, Thailand. I work at / in the post office near here. I’m Liza, from Canada You can also ask some questions about his/her job or journey in your conversations. Where do you come from? / Where are you from? What do you do? What’s your job? And you? David : I’m from America. May I introduce myself? My name is William. My name is David

If you are not sure whether they have known each other before, you may say “By the way , have you meet Liza Barker?” Responding I’m afraid not. I don’t think so.
