16 women’s viewTHERE IS NO FAILURE…ONLY EXPERIENCES As I sat across a dear friend, listening to him talk about the financial crisis he was going through, I noticed how tired and sad he looked. He didn't look too well. With college-going children, and a wife to support, he was laid off from his job. Though a very talented man, he is not courageous enough to have his own dreams and goals. He has enough knowledge and experience but not enough confidence to start his own business. Fear crippled him. He was afraid to fail, even without trying. He felt he had failed; failed his family and himself. Failure is our biggest fear in life. 'Fail' generally means something that didn't turn out as we had hoped or planned. However, there is something beautiful about failure; no matter what we think didn't work out, we never go back to the very beginning of the point where we didn't know anything. When we 'fail', we go back to our most recent point of transformation, the point where we started this portion of our journey. Once we are on a path, we begin to assess our progress and if we don't like the direction, speed, or destination, we call it a failure but it is actually an opportunity to reconsider our plan and make adjustments using the new energy and points of alignment that we gained from making the journey. We need to integrate what we have learned so far, make adjustments as necessary, create a new plan and begin again. But we don't begin at the very beginning itself; we begin again at the place where we stopped. Then we move forward until we need to integrate more energy to be able to continue to move forward. Sept.2015|

women’s view 17The journey takes longer than we plan for, simply because we always want to do everything in the shortest time possible.Let Go Whatever That Don't Support Your GoalsI have failed in business ventures. The first failure was hard to accept but I persevered because I believed in my goals.Taking some time off, I started looking sincerely whether it was worth continuing my business or start anew. I had spenta lot of money and time in it but I must agree that it was purely profit-oriented, nothing to do with my passion to work withpeople. I took out a piece of paper and started jotting down my actual goals in life. Then, with a new goal, I identified allthose that don't support my goal anymore. Slowly, I started to work on letting go those I don't need anymore; startingwith my business – I sold it to someone who was interested. Then, I sat down with a new partner and planned the newventure which has been working well and fine since established. Sept.2015|

18 women’s view Failure is Equivalent to a PauseWe need 'pauses' in our life to consider adjustments in sure we're still focused on our goals, and maybeour path and plan. We have many clues that the plan even go for holidays or just sleep your days off, just toneeds changing along the way, when we aren't happy, make sure we're in top form for the next phase of thewe feel stuck, we can't move forward, things get really journey.hard, or nothing works as we want it to or think it should. Those are not points of failure, they are points for Reclaimed By Naturereconsideration of the plan and the outcome, to ensurethat they're aligned and that we are aligned with them. women’s view 19they serve is no more needed. When the original mission or objective of a company is not there anymore (i.e. moneybeing more important than the quality of products – we can mostly see this in food places and restaurants), the businesswould slowly make losses and eventually shut down. This does not mean that the venture has failed when your business defunct. Nature is just telling you that yourbusiness needs reviewing or it is time for you to do something else in life. So, the best thing is to just flow along andtrust in what surprise Nature has awaiting you. That's why the utmost important thing for a company or business tothrive in the industry is to keep focussing on its goal/mission. Employers must continuously educate and remind theiremployees to work and focus on the company mission. Now, back to my friend. After a long silence, he took out his notebookand starting working or possibilities. He looked at me, confused,“Where do I start?” I said, What does your heart want to do now? Andhe smiled, “I know exactly where to start. I have always wanted to owna travel business. I love travelling and that is all I want do to now.”

THE ANCIENT INDIAN FORMS ofBUSINESS ORGANIZATION Sept.2015|

TODAY I LEARNED 21Trade has played a consistently important part of Indian history. It is, thus, not surprising that Ancient India possessed a variety of different organizational forms to facilitate trade. Along with the family-run business and individually owned business enterprises Ancient India possessed a number of other forms of engaging in business or collective activity, including the gana, pani, puga, vrata, samgha, nigama, and sreni. THE GANA AND THE PUGA AND VRATA TOSAMGHA APPEAR TO REFERES ENTITIES WITHREFER TO POLITICAL MEMBERS THAT OFTEN HAD ECONOMIC MOTIVATIONS, BUT AND RELIGIOUS WERE ALSO RESIDENTS OF AN ENTITIES ENTIRE TOWN OR VILLAGE DEVOTED TO A PROFESSION. NIGAMA AND SRENI THE PANI IS OFTENREFER MOST OFTEN TO INTERPRETED AS REPRESENTING A GROUP OF ECONOMIC MERCHANTS TRAVELING IN A ORGANIZATIONS OF CARAVAN TO TRADE THEIR MERCHANTS, CRAFTSPEOPLE AND ARTISANS, WARES. AND PERHAPS EVEN PARA-MILITARY ENTITIES.Of these the sreni, nigama and pani are the ones most frequently engaged in economic activities. The corporate form (e.g., the sreni)was being used in India from at least 800 B.C., and perhaps even earlier. There is evidence to suggest that traders would oftenorganize into a partnership form for the purposes of engaging in long distance travel and trade over sea and land. Usually thesewould be entered into by two or more people and they would appoint a leader. The entity would be bound by the activity of thepartners and the entity appeared to have the ability to own assets separately from its owners. These two features provide the entitieswith the imprimatur of a contracting entity. There were also fairly detailed rules developed over the years for the division of assets and liabilities. The rules for sharing assetsand liabilities could be determined by agreement or, failing that, by the laws existing at that time that would divide assets andliabilities equally or sometimes by the relative contributions (skill, labor and capital) invested in the entity by members. The latter wasmore common in partnerships amongst craft people.Extracted from The Economic History Of The Corporate Form In Ancient India Sept.2015|

It will allow units of energy to be transferred when and where it isneeded.SMART ENERGY Imagine a city that made unnecessary for any resident to own a private car with a goal of establishing an on- Sept.2015| demand mobility system that would allow customers to choose among public and private transport providers and assemble the fastest or cheapest way of getting anywhere they need to go at any time. Residents could arrange a personalized travel experience irrespective of location. Wherever they are in the city, they could access a variety of options with their phone: a carshare, an on-demand bus, an automated car, special transport for children, or traditional public transit. Residents could purchase “mobility packages” from private operators that would give them a host of options depending on weather, time of day, and demand. On-demand ride services companies such as Uber , which allow ordinary motorists to use their personal cars to offer prearranged transportation services.

EXCLUSIVE 29 SMART MANUFACTURING Smart Manufacturing transforms traditional factories from cost centers into profit centers that progressive businesses will strategically invest in to increase sales. Smart manufacturing is flexible enough to respond to global consumer demand and bring to life innovations such as the electric-powered car or other game-changers. Flexible factories can be more quickly reprogrammed to provide faster time to market today and the next generation of mass customization. Smart manufacturing marries information, technology and human ingenuity to bring about a rapid revolution in the development and application of manufacturing intelligence to every aspect of business. It will fundamentally change how products are invented, manufactured, shipped and sold. It willimprove worker safety and protect the environment by making zero emissions, zero-incident manufacturing possible. It will alsoenable an interconnected, efficient global industrial ecosystem. SMART CITIES The concept of “smart cities” has attracted considerable attention in the context of urban development policies. The Internet and broadband network technologies as enablers of e- services become more and more important for urban development, while cities are increasingly assuming a critical role as drivers of innovation in areas such as health, inclusion, environment and business. A smart city uses digital technologies or information and communication technologies(ICT) to enhance quality and performance of urban services, to reduce costs and resource consumption, and to engage moreeffectively and actively with its citizens. In the long term smart cities vision, systems and structures will monitor their own conditions and carry out self-repair, as needed. Thephysical environment, air , water and surrounding green spaces will be monitored in non-obtrusive ways for optimal quality, thuscreating an enhanced living and working environment that is clean, efficient, and secure. LANGUAGEAFFECTS RESULTSWe use words and language “ Language and word “ every day, in just about choice form a manager's everything we engage in. We primary tool. Useduse language to communicate with others, wisely, sound guidanceto engage in business, to sell, to negotiate, can grow from the seedsto solve problems, to express our creativity, of aligned words. Usedand for numerous other activities. poorly and all you get are weedsOften, languaging works in magical ways.Sometimes a single word can set off an Michael Lissack and Johan Roos, argument, break loyal bonds or offend The Next Common Sense.friends and coworkers and businesspartners. Sometimes a word can turn aperson around, create a new sense ofbeing. Sept.2015|

LIFESTYLE 35 LANGUAGE AFFECTS RESULTSThe words we use are so important. Your words are your life.Words are wonderful when used in a proper way. They canencourage and give confidence to the listener. A right wordspoken at the right time can actually be life-changing.Example: For instance, when you tell a group of people to “Try to be  When you get up in the morning, and if there is here by 7.30 am tomorrow” instead of telling them, “You must something you need to attend to that day that you're not be here by 7.30 am tomorrow” the number of people turning up looking forward to, you can say, “I dread this day,” or on time is likely to reduce. When you use the word “try”, most you can say, “I will have the strength and confidence people won't process the language and store it away in their today to do whatever I need to do and to do it with brain with enough of a priority to understand they must be there joy.” Which of these two statements do you think would for 7.30 am. better prepare you for the day? GET SPECIFICAlways make sure you understand exactly what people mean when they use words. For instance, if somebody says a team memberis 'unreliable', you won't know exactly what that means unless you know exactly what 'unreliable' means to the person who said it, inthat context. You may apply very different criteria for labelling someone as 'reliable' compared to them. The solution is quite simply toask! For instance: “What causes you to say they are unreliable” or “In what ways do you find them unreliable?”Social psychologist Ellen Langer tested the power of a single word in 'Xerox Mindfulness Experiment' where she asked a volunteerto cut in line at a copy machine. She tried three different ways of asking: 1. “Excuse me, I have five pages. May I use the Xerox machine?” – 60% said OK 2. “Excuse me, I have five pages. May I use the Xerox machine because I'm in a rush?” – 94% said OK 3. “Excuse me, I have five pages. May I use the Xerox machine because I have to make some copies?” – 93% said OKThe trigger word “because” was all she needed. The takeaway: When you want people to take action, always give a reason. Bespecific with the content. Who is motivated “AWAY FROM”, and who is motivated “TOWARDS”? How to know who is motivated bywhat language? There are two basic desires that spark motivation: 'moving towards' something desirable, and 'moving away' from something notdesirable. Another way to look at motivation is the old analogy of the carrot and the stick. Listen carefully to see whether people aretalking about getting 'away from' something that isn't working well for them, or are going 'towards' the best outcome they are lookingfor. If you echo their style of language, you will get much better results.Example:  One person may want to book a holiday to 'get away' (moving away) from stress at work; another may want to 'go to enjoy' (moving towards) a new experience.  Another classic example used to illustrate towards and away from motivation is smoking. For the 'towards' motivated person they quit because they want the health benefits and lifestyle of a non-smoker.For the 'away' from motivated person they are worried about the health consequences of smoking and so stop out of fear. Sept.2015|

36 LIFESTYLE FOCUS ON HOW YOU CAN, NOT WHY YOU CAN'T!Start your question with, “who,” “what,” “where,” “when,” “how,” or “why” are likely to get great responses. To be avoided are “would,”“should,” “is,” “are,” and “do you think,” as they can limit how people respond to you a lot. “CAN'T” IS USUALLY “WON'T”I'm completely convinced that a key element of personal and business success is the ability to differentiate correctly between \"Ican't\" and \"I won't.\"Here's a basic example: \"I can't do this job.\" This means you currently lack the skills to accomplish this task. \"I won't do this job.\" This means you've decided not to accomplish this task, even though you could if you wanted to.Though that distinction seems pretty clear, unmotivated people often say \"I can't\" when they mean \"I won't\". The best solutions comewhen we focus on how we can do something instead of why we can't. If we allow our brain the chance to take part in our success, byasking ourselves the right questions, in the right mindset, then amazing ideas can begin to flow.As a rule, when somebody \"can't\" do something, it's because he or she lacks the skill to do it; when somebody \"won't\" do something,it's because he or she lacks the will to do it. “YET!” IS A TINY BUT POWERFUL WORDAccording to Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck (https://youtu.be/aQ0VQjKU8og):- by simply adding the word “yet” to thestatements you make about yourself may be enough to change your beliefs about yourself and your abilities. If things aren't workingout, simply adding 'yet' to the end of a sentence can transform your mindset. For instance, consider the impact of “I'm not getting a customer to say yes to me”, versus '”I'm not getting any customers to say yes tome yet”. The “yet” tells your brain “you will one day”, so it keeps looking for a solution and hope is not lost. STOP WANTING AND HAVE IT!Ask yourself, what are the emotions that you associate with the things you “Want”? If it is a feeling of not having, or one of lack, thenthe universe can only respond with the actual manifestation of “lack” and not having. Wanting is a not having vibration, so what youvibrate, you attract. The state of wanting will forever keep you not having.Exercise: You can use to make the leap from “Wanting” into “Having” Find a comfortable place. Close your eyes and relax your body 2. Once relaxed, bring to mind something that you already have that was once a goal. Perhaps you once wanted a home, a car or some other material gain. Perhaps it was your college degree or career. 3. Notice the feeling inside. Notice how it feels now that you actually have the goal. Is there any effort? No. Does it remain forever lost in some hazy distant future as something that you someday \"hope\" to have? No! Of course not. Because you already have it. It is yours right now. There is No Effort and No Time needed to achieve it, because it's yours. This is precisely the consciousness of having that you must assume to have any goal. That is the only way you ever achieved any goal. Okay? So take note of that feeling of having. Sept.2015|

LIFESTYLE 374. Now think of a goal you have been wanting very much. Allow yourself to feel how much you want it.5. Now picture yourself, as if in a movie, achieving that goal. Keep it in the third person where you don't quite feel that you have the goal, but rather the \"movie character\" version of you has it.6. Notice the feeling of desire and effort is still there. You still want it. It still feels like it is \"out there\" as you think \"of it.\"7. Now, begin releasing the clutch, the wanting, the underlying wanting approval, control and security, more and more.8. And finally, make an inner shift of consciousness where you... DARE to ASSUME that it is yours RIGHT NOW. That's right. It is no longer \"out there\" as if in a movie or in the future. You are it now. With such an assumption, you've mentally collapsed time and space. You've dropped all effort. The goal is no longer in some distant future. It is yours RIGHT NOW. See, hear and feel the gratitude of having it, knowing it is yours now. Feel the ease and happiness. It is yours at last. Get a sense of that. It may feel like, \"Ahhhh... thank you!\" Notice the natural release that comes when you move from thinking of the goal into thinking from the feeling of already having the goal.9. Feel it is yours now? Congratulations! You made the leap - the \"gap\" between wanting and having.10. 40 LEADERSHIPVEDANTIC MANAGEMENT:LEADERSHIP LESSONS from the Bhagavad-GitaPart 13 - MajestyTime perfects all living thingsKautilya ANCHORING | CULTIVATION | MAJESTY Sept.2015|

LEADERSHIP 41Welcome to this September edition of the Malaysian Indian Business Magazine, which features the culmination of the lessons from the ancient art of “leader-making. “How does time perfect beings?Kautilya is absolutely correct in saying time perfects us all. This is simply because time relates to the accrual of patience and experience. In business, while acting quickly is an asset, patience is what reveals real opportunities. Patience fosters improved observation skills, crucial to life and business. That is why as Fred Brooks put it in his 1975 book The Mythical Man-Month, “nine women can't make a baby in one month”.In the Bhagavad-Gita, Krishna reveals the significance of time by associating his own powers with it:“kālo 'smi loka-kṣaya-kṛt pravṛddho lokān samāhartum iha pravṛttaḥ ṛte 'pi tvāṁ na bhaviṣyanti sarve ye 'vasthitāḥ pratyanīkeṣu yodhāḥ I am like Time itself; a recycler of all things, That is how I engage people. I deem all the warriors here, save you and your brothers, slain. Bhagavad-Gita 11:32Deference to time is important, but patience does not mean inaction. Patience is intended to facilitate the obtaining of experience; a learning tool. That is the definitive feature of learning the final stage of this ancient leader-making lessons. The inculcation of patience leads to majesty; theperfection of the being. It is an axiom of modern business that leadership is a state of mind and not merely an office. That's partly true but partlyinaccurate. Sometimes people are called to be leaders who simply do not think they have the necessary abilities. Arjuna is one such person.Nevertheless, the office of leadership demands that he rise to the occasion.Even if Arjuna was not ready, he did not realize that time had brought him to this moment. As a result of the passage of time, he found himself at acrucial turning point. Not whether to kill or be killed, but whether to do what was necessary. This is what Krishna describes as prescribed duty when he says 'Prescribed duties cannot be abandoned.' He then describes the perfect work asbeing covered by fault. Krishna encourage working, even thought it is replete with mistakes. We may continuously find error in our work, but it isnecessary to go on; that's the secret of good leaders: “ saha-jaṁ karma kaunteya sa-doṣam api na tyajet sarvārambhā hi doṣeṇa dhūmenāgnir ivāvṛtāḥ All your work is tainted by some error like smoke taints the pureness of fire. One cannot give up work simply because it contains errors. Bhagavad-Gita 18:48The hidden meaning of the verses in Chapter 18 refers to perseverance in the face of misgivings, errors and even certain defeat. This is because truemajesty comes from steadfastness, patience, courage and a desire to improve. All leaders must cultivate these values in order to reach their fullcapabilities. India's prime minister no longer enjoys the uncritical support of the investors who welcomed his landslide election triumph 15months ago.
