Letter from the Rectory “The times they are a-changin’” – so sang Bob Dylan and he was certainly right! Last month saw our whole pattern of life change; everything is held in a state of suspended animation while we wait for the next news bulletin. All our planned meetings and events in April were postponed and none of us has any idea when we can start planning again. It is an unsettling and worrying time, particularly for those who are vulnerable and isolated, home alone. It is a deeply anxious time for those whose livelihoods and futures are at risk. And for many throughout the world it is a time of unutterable grief for the loss of loved ones who cannot properly be mourned. As I write, our churches remain closed because social distancing is essential to protect lives; many people are self-isolating or shielding because they are vulnerable. The fabric of society throughout the nation is being rewoven to an earlier pattern as the importance of local community is being rediscovered. Our rural villages here in the Teign Valley are strong communities and it has been heart-warming to see and hear how people are volunteering and looking out for each other. In these uncertain times we do have anchors which hold us fast and offer hope. After the suffering of Holy Week, we celebrated the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ at Easter; tears gave way to joy. This month, in May, we rejoin the disciples and follow a similar path from fear to joy. The disciples rejoiced to have Jesus with them again, transformed but still their companion, eating with them and preparing them for when he must depart this world; we remember Jesus’s return to the Father on the Feast of the Ascension, Thurs 21 May. But without their leader the disciples retreated in fear again, terrified of reprisals by the authorities. They hid in an upper room and prayed for the gift of the Holy Spirit, as Jesus had instructed them. At Pentecost, which we celebrate on 31 May, they received the Spirit in tongues of fire which so inflamed their hearts with love that they went out into the street bursting with the Good News of Jesus for the whole world.

The Church asks us to join an international wave of prayer from 21 to 31 May, Thy Kingdom Come, to pray for the gift of the Holy Spirit, the giver and sustainer of life and love. Our need of the Spirit has rarely been greater. Check out the website https://www.thykingdomcome.global for a wealth of prayer resources and ideas. And let us continue to join together by phone every Sunday at 10am, worshipping God in a community of hearts and voices. There is also a telephone service of evening prayer on Wednesdays at 6pm. For details of how to join, please see the next page. Come, creator Spirit, source of life; sustain us when our hearts are heavy and our wells have run dry, for you are the Father’s gift, with him who is our living water, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Teign Valley and Haldon Hill Mission Community The Teign Valley and Haldon Hill Mission Community includes the parishes of Ashton, Bridford, Christow, Doddiscombsleigh, Dunchideock and Dunsford. Rev’d Ruth Frampton (Priest-in-Charge) can be contacted on 01647 253164 or [email protected]. Her day off is Thursday. Pastoral Care If you would like, or know someone who would be glad of, a call or “virtual” visit from Rev’d Ruth Frampton, or another member of the church community, please contact the rectory (contact details above), or the Churches’ Administrator (see Getting in touch… below). Coronavirus In the light of the Government guidance, the Church of England has said that all churches are to close to help prevent the spread of coronavirus. We are, however, holding regular services by telephone – at 10am, each Sunday morning, and a service of evening prayer at 6pm each Wednesday evening. You do not need internet access, but simply a landline or mobile telephone. Between 5 and 10 minutes before the service begins, please dial 0333 011 0616 and enter the code 334 7721 and # when asked. You will also be asked to give your name and #. The cost of the call is the standard cost for any 01, 02 or 03 number, but will vary according to your telephone contract. It may well be covered by your “inclusive” minutes, or by free evening or weekend calls, but you are advised to check. If you are anxious about the current situation, or would like prayer or pastoral support (e.g. because of illness or bereavement), please do not hesitate to contact Rev’d Ruth Frampton or the Churches’ Administrator (Steve Cook) – contact details above and below.

There is a separate notice elsewhere in the magazine giving details of how the churches are working together with local parish councils and others to co- ordinate shopping, collect medication etc for those who need to “self-isolate” or who can’t leave their homes. Annual Parochial Church Meetings (APCMs) These have all been postponed until the Autumn. Getting in touch… In the current situation, no baptisms, weddings or other services are taking place in church, but If you wish to discuss plans for a postponed or future baptism/christening, banns of marriage, wedding, interment of ashes or memorial service, or have any other enquiry, please contact Steve Cook, the Churches’ Administrator, on 01392 832332 or email [email protected] Coronavirus – help for those “self-isolating” who need shopping and/or medications collected The situation with Coronavirus continues to change, so these arrangements may well have to be reviewed. Government and NHS advice is available as follows: NHS: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/ Government information: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-action- plan/coronavirus-action-plan-a-guide-to-what-you-can-expect-across-the-uk Teignbridge District Council: https://www.teignbridge.gov.uk/coronavirus-covid-19/coronavirus-help-and- advice/coronavirus-updates/ Significant numbers of people in the valley are having to “self-isolate” or not leave their homes. The churches and other groups are working together to try and ensure that those who may need practical help with shopping, collecting medication etc in this situation can receive help if needed.

REQUEST FOR BUTTONS SIZED BETWEEN 1 – 1 ½ INCHES PLEASE! Judith Travell is putting out a plea asking for any 1 to 1.5 inch buttons? These are for a crochet headband to help the comfort of all the staff in A&E who are wearing their facemasks. See the photos! The top photo shows her sister Rosie’s team wearing them, and you can see how they keep the elastic away from the ears, which get very sore if they have to wear them around the ears for long periods. If you have buttons of the right size that you can spare please hand deliver or post to Judith at Haldon House, Dunchideock, Exeter, EX6 7YF. Hand deliveries can be put in the basket chair in her garage so as to avoid human contact! Here is the crochet pattern for anyone creative who would like to make some too. Any questions to Judith at [email protected] • RT in cotton - needs to be washable at 60*. DK weight (I’m using cotton glace) 2.5mm hook. Make Bar: Ch27. • 3Tr in 3rd ch from hook. Tr in each chain to last. 7tr in last. Turn and work back up other side of chain - tr in each ch until you reach ch with 3tr in other side. 3tr in this ch. Finish off by sl st into 1st tr. leave long end to attach buttons. • Edge: Attach alternative colour to 3rd tr in 1st group of 3. Dc in each tr along flat side until you reach 1st of 7 tr (in last ch). 2Dc,Dc,2Dc,Dc,2Dc,Dc,2Dc around 7tr set. Dc in each tr down second side. 2Dc,Dc,2Dc,Dc,2Dc,Dc,2Dc around 3tr, top of chain, 3Tr. Sl st to 1st Dc. Finish ends neatly. • Firmly attach buttons centred over treble bases at each end of chain. They should sit just inside the outer edge of the Bar. Finish securely. Decorate if required! Elastics of mask fit over buttons, lifting them off ears. Can be positioned at ‘high ponytail ‘ level (works best) or lower, depending on comfort. Plan is to have enough for everyone to have one to wash and one to wear! Untested except by me. Can be made larger by adding another row of Dc outside, with 2Dc, Dc x2, 2Dc, Dc x2, 2Dc, Dc x2, 2Dc, Dc around ends. I aim for some pretty and some ‘practical’ as they are for all sexes.

The list of readings and prayers are listed above and will be read and said in spite of the closedown. It is good to see so many taking their daily walks through the churchyard in the lovely Spring weather as the primroses raise their heads just above the

grass and the trees blossom. Spare a thought for all those who are unable to get out and about, to see all the fresh colours after such a long winter; let’s pray for a good summer to follow - that we can all enjoy! The Annual Parochial Church Meeting was due to be held on 21st April, but this will now take place sometime in the autumn. The accounts were agreed by the PCC just before the shutdown and copies will be available at the back of church as soon as we can reopen. At the PCC meeting, Wendy Nelmes was due to stand down as churchwarden after 29 years of service in the role. She has been a steadfast servant of the church and the parish all that time, and her guiding hand and words will be missed by those remaining on the PCC. However, she assures me she will still be sitting in church every Sunday – though not in her usual pew! Whilst she is retiring from all her church jobs, she will continue to work with Daphne at the Open Door Café (when it reopens). Our grateful thanks for all she has done over so many years. Coronavirus If you need to self-isolate because of coronavirus and require help with shopping etc, we have volunteers willing to help you. Please contact the clerk. If you would like to volunteer to help, please contact the clerk and say what you are able to do. [email protected] Mobile: 07427 145320 Shillingford Parish Clerk – Mrs Juliette Thompson

Neighbourhood Watch Shillingford Abbot Shillingford Abbot resident Clare Clarke has volunteered to be the village Neighbourhood Watch coordinator. If you would like to receive Neighbourhood Watch Network updates by email please get in touch on [email protected] or call her on 07941612397. Shillingford Wildlife Group Despite everything Spring has arrived. The continual rain that turned the land into a quagmire is behind us and we can all hope for better times ahead. One thing on which we can all agree is that we are very fortunate to live in such a pleasant village in such beautiful surroundings. Those of us who could go out for a walk have noticed, and probably appreciated more than ever, the wonderful wildlife around us. The Shillingford Wildlife Group has had to cancel some meetings and postpone activities such as the hedgehog survey and sowing patches of wildflowers around the parish. The Dawn Chorus Event may have been cancelled – but the birds will still be singing. The Wildlife Group have a Facebook Page which you can join “Shillingford St George Wildlife Group” and read and post about local flora and fauna. Once we are back to ‘normal’ we will revive our activities. There is lots of interesting and helpful information on the Teignbridge website -www.teignbridge.gov.uk It’s well worth a visit, covering such items such as a Coronovirus advice hotline service for residents in our area who feeling isolated who need help and support. Also:- Waste and recycling information and help Job vacancies My neighbourhood Planning etc etc.
