LAND RECOGNITION We acknowledge the Payómkawichum (the People of the West) as the traditional land caretakers of the land on which MiraCosta College is built and its surrounding traditional cultural landscapes. Today, the Payómkawichum are known as Luiseño and are made up of seven bands: La Jolla, Pala, Pauma, Pechanga, Rincon, San Luis Rey, and Soboba.

We, the MiraCosta Community College District, are mindful of the Indigenous peoples in this place, and we pay our respects to the Luiseño— past, present, and emerging. We are grateful to have the opportunity to be part of this community in Luiseño territory and to honor their history, culture, and perseverance of spirit.

HISTORY & INFORMATION

The renovation of the athletic track and field project on the Oceanside Campus is the first of many complete projects funded under Measure MM; the November 2O16, voter approved bond.

This project was made possible with the support of the local community.

1980s

First built in the early 198Os, the outdated track has been replaced with a world-class soccer and athletics field that will meet size requirements for international competition. In addition, the new Field House provides space for team rooms, changing rooms, coaches’ offices, equipment storage, and ADA-compliant restrooms.

This renovation project offers a two-lane walking and jogging path around the perimeter of the fields—a feature the community can use year-round. The path helps to create a small athletics field complex that better leverages the natural ‘bowl’ formed in the topography of that portion of the campus.

1980s

The project includes a number of sustainable strategies. The landscape is drought tolerant and incorporates native California species. California natives attract birds and butterflies to help enrich the local ecology. Storm water runoff is directed to a modular wetland system at the lowest point of the site, which filters pollutants in the water through plant and soil media.
