REVIEW p. 51 At the time of writing this submission dates haven’t been announced, but I intend Professional practice and work experience in graphic design to submit work for the awards as soon as they are. Working towards this live brief has been a good experience, as it gave clear guidelines whilst also being open to different design solutions within the characteristics of the audiobook story. The brief does not ask for research material, or developments, which surprised me. I started my design by looking at the children audio books on audible, the majority have illustrated covers, the style within this range a lot, the key appeared to be simple and colourful. I have look designers who work with child-centred design as part of my research for Preparation for Extended Studies, this has given me a wealth of inspiration, especially from New York graphic designer Erin Jang who encapsulates playfulness in her work. I sometimes struggle to explain how I work; I imagined an idea from reading the description, I didn’t spend time thinking about it, I just sketched out a picture and reworked it on Illustrator. I developed the idea to work with the brief, I had to resize it, add a background, add a title that was clear and worked with the design. When I made mock-ups of the first version, I felt I could improve it, I rearranged the elements, took some out and brought the main one’s to the front. As part of the brief, I had to provide three examples of the design in outdoor settings, ones that would suit the target audience, young families. I struggled to think of locations, instead I considered what adverts I notice the most, thinking along the lines that it would be the caregiver that had the audible account, so I’d want to get their attention. For the outdoor adverts I took reference from an audible advertisement campaign, using the orange colour palette they have used in the past, their official typeface, and sentence tagline which is often used in their designs. I am happy with the design solution I’ve created for this brief; it is eye catching design that works within the brand guidelines and clearly depicts the essence of the audiobook story. Basing the posters on an old audible campaign might not have been the best idea, the judges might not think highly of my design reusing an old concept.
Professional practice and work experience in graphic design RSA REVIEW Following the presentation, I feel there was some confusion between us on what we were aiming for with the billboards, I think my understanding of what we wanted to achieve as an outcome was different from the others, this may have caused some confusing in the presentation. Focusing on the feedback, our project started off as a commercial campaign, personally I don’t like the idea consumerism mixing with nature, it has been done before and it feels like a contradiction, hurting the environment then trying to balance things out by using plants, coke and mc-donalds adverts for example. Anyway, I felt that we had moved away from that commercial side of advertising and were now using the adverts to make and statement, whilst at the same time being placed in areas with high pollution, so that they would be tackling pollution with Photosynthesis. This was in my mind at least a two-pronged attack against pollution. The billboard would be helping to reduce pollution, while the statement on the billboard was informing people about air pollution, because actually its subject that is easy to ignore, and not everyone knows the facts about it. In my mind our project was a public advertisement, one that could be linked to the Bristol Clean Air plan, working with the council to lessen air pollution in Bristol, because the city needs more input with that. p. 52
p. 53 Saying all that, did our project have that as clear outcomes, no, Professional practice and work experience in graphic design it didn’t, and a lot of what I think the project could have done wasn’t obvious, and it is possible that what I thought about the project wasn’t what our designer had aimed for. To respond to another point from the feedback, our design didn’t have the ability to show an outcome, considering it now, I think that the design isn’t going to chance someone’s view on pollution, they may have a short-term effect, make people think, but after a while it just becomes another statement, another advert. So we would need to find some ways to quantity how the billboard was affecting pollution levels, perhaps this could be in the form of a digital reading, the before and after, then people could tell that the billboard was doing something, it wouldn’t make people do anything. But perhaps seeing the levels of pollution, and hopefully seeing them lower because of the plants would make people pay more attention, then maybe they would make better decisions, or not, the plants would still be making a difference.
Professional practice and work experience in graphic design RESEARCH p. 54 Graphic designers I have researched and been inspired by in Semester One. I was introduced to Erin’s work in the summer. She consistently intergrates play, colour, and craft in her work. This is the kind of work I aspire to make.
p. 55 pim.preston.designs are Professional practice and work experience in graphic design everything I love about design. Their aesthetics, how they describe their work, it’s all very inspiring. They are the kind of agency I’d like to work for, my work isn’t up to their standard, but its something to aim for.
Professional practice and work experience in graphic design Another agency I really like, Studio Anorak are a London content and illustration agency who specialise in fun creative projects aimed at kids and their families, brands and cultural associations. p. 56
p. 57 Passion Swirls are a small agency, Professional practice and work experience in graphic design I like their aesthetics. I’ve taken inspiration from their work, especially in font, they use La Luxes which has become one of my favourite display fonts. I also like their work because it isn’t out of my capabilty, I see it as prompts to things I could do myself.
