My chosen theme is Play & Education, this is a broad theme so I will be focusing on Play in Early Education. I am drawn to this specific area because the first seven 7 of a child’s life are the most significant for their all-round development, mentally, physically and spiritually. It is a very rich subject, but equally an overwhelming one, due to its importance. My starting point will be the question of what the importance of play in early education. My aim is to gather research to help me better understand the subject, where possible I hope to obtain some first- hand knowledge from educators. My outcomes will develop from my research, I currently have no fixed ideas on what I want to achieve outcome wise. 41 PREPARATION FOR EXTENDED STUDY

Interview 1 As part of my research, I contacted some of the Early Education Department at Frenchaye to get some first-hand knowledge about play in education. I used this as an opportunity to find out more about early education. My first interview was with Becky, who is the Associate Head of Department Education and Early Childhood. Recalling the interview, I was why I wanted to respond to such a hard topic? My response was because I care about education, I admittedly may have a romanticised view about early education, but maybe that is because I know it should be magical. Maybe my job as a designer is to capture some of that magic. First of all, I learnt that I might need to reframe my theme question, play is part of learning, but I didn’t understand its place within the modern education system. I was not fully aware of the needs of the education system. Considering play, what it is to a child? \"It is a way that children explore their understanding of the world.\" 44 PREPARATION FOR EXTENDED STUDY

We discussed a vague idea I had for using cooking as an area I could integrate Early Educational needs with an accessible design outcome. In Becky’s opinion this is a good idea, but the way in which the design outcome it is used is what makes it work/or not work as a learning tool. What I needed to create was a design outcome for the benefit of learning, that responded to the needs of child within early education in the UK. I would need to move away from the idea of something being purely playful, taking note from the Eames’ I needed to think of an outcome that would be “Serious Play”. On the subject of learning more about early education in the UK; it was explained to me that early education for children isn’t meeting targets, in fact it is letting children down. Now, I am not surprised by that news, but I am disappointed by it. I learnt from the interview that literature in early education is ‘rubbish’. Reading and writing skills in UK education are lower than in other countries. Becky explained to me that children learn from reading and writing with their caregivers, that social aspect is incredibly important. Considering this as part of my outcome, I could mix reading and cooking together, this would be in line with early literacy learning tools. A cookbook could hit lots of buttons when it comes to educational outcomes, but also it would remain playful a way to explore new ideas and learn from practicing, both of which is key for early development. 45 PREPARATION FOR EXTENDED STUDY

Let me highlight some of the key-ways that a cookbook could aid early development. • Support literacy development • Support numeracy development • Supports language accumulation and development • Reading for a purpose • Reading for comprehension • Phonic awareness • Social interaction • Constructive knowledge • Emotional building block • Learning about shapes • Learning about science • Learning through experience Learning about cooking can also: - Teach Responsibility - Creates Adventurous Eaters - Engaging senses - Holistic development - Developmental social skills - Knowledge about multiculturism - Learning where foods come food 46 PREPARATION FOR EXTENDED STUDY

Areas I was recommended to look at Social constructivism – “I believe that knowledge is constructed socially” • Vygotsky • Bruner SSP - SYSTEMATIC SYNTHETIC PHONICS Language technique introduced by the Labour party to help with literacy development. From an education background it would be useful to have a cookbook that could be used to help a child to read, by using phonically decodable language. 47 PREPARATION FOR EXTENDED STUDY

Interview 2 My second interview was with Joe Brown, who is a Senior Lecturer in Early Childhood. Unlike the first interview which was free flowing, for this interview I had a set of key questions. As a side note I found this interview so informing it went on to become the base of a main outcome. The following is the full transcribed version of the interview. 50 PREPARATION FOR EXTENDED STUDY
