CHANGI BEACH PARK OBLIQUE CABIN TUTOR: ROBERT TEH MODULE: DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION We were tasked to design a 3.6 by 3.6 metre cabin, with the concept drawn from a country of our choice as well as from observing sever- al site conditions in Changi Beach. We used a haiku methodology to derive our concept statement. THUNDERING SHADOWS DISTANT TIMES ILLUMINATE OBLIQUE HORIZONS
The theme and concept of the cabin is taken from Hiroshima, Japan. The cabin represents the resilience and tenacity of the people of Hiroshima which is reflected through the ma- terialiity of the build. Shou-sugi-ban is a process which involves charring a wood surface to render it a deep charcoal-black, a technique originat- ing from 18th centry Japan which was used to weatherproof cedar siding. VARIETY OF SHOU-SUGI BAN- The cabin has an oblique shaped window which acts as a viewing port that frames ones view of the sea. This oblique observatory al- lows for the inhabitants to- have an undisturbed and fo- cused view of the sea horizon, with the exterior activities of the cabin becoming a serene painting of everyday beach life that it’s occupants can enjoy.
