AcThaedemy A STEP IN TIME The Academy breathes new life into the nostalgic soundtrack of Mary Poppins with A Step in Time. Designed for the corps’ unique style of pageantry, the production features classic songs from the film presented amidst elaborate scenery. In addition to traditional color guard equipment, a variety of props are incorporated into the choreography, including “bricks” used by the performers as both steps and building blocks to create the iconic chimney of “Chim Chim Cher-ee.” During the titular “Step in Time” sequence, front ensemble percussion members wear men’s dress shoes on their hands as a musical and visual device. Carefully executed set design is paired with the heights of performance to captivate the audience. The Academy combines dancers and intricate drum corps elements to create an exuberant, fast-paced finale. I. Introduction Chim Chim Cher-ee A Shooting Star II. Blue Devils INK The spark of a thought ignites the imagination. It travels the synapses from the brain down the arm and to the hand. The hand grasps the pen and dips it in the liquid and moves from well to paper. Here, the liquid drops onto the waiting space. The droplet begins to take the shape of a single letter. The letter is joined by another and another and begins to form a word. The word is linked and connected to more words. A sentence is born. More sentences emerge and join together. They become paragraph after para- graph. A story begins to dance on the pages. From the elegant quill to the rhythmic cadence of the typewriter, characters leap from the pages of beloved stories in ink. With stunning design, choreography and music by Stephen Sondheim and Gordon Goodwin, ink will write an exciting new chapter in the Blue Devils’ ongoing story. Blue Stars SIDE SHOW The 2015 Blue Stars shine a spotlight on the outcast vagabonds of the traveling carnival and examine the relationship between spectator and spectacle. Set in the great depression, Side Show pulls back the curtain on an era defined by hardship and loss. In an effort to forget daily struggles, the spectators spend what little money they have to be entertained by the acts and oddities revealed along the midway. Characters such as jugglers, contortionists, sword-swallowers, and clowns reveal themselves and immerse the audience in displays of illusion and feats of strength. Bluecoats KINETIC NOISE In physics, kinetic energy is the energy of an object due its motion and noise is an unexpected disturbance of energy or sound. In Kinetic Noise, the energy of motion collides with intense and startling music of five incredible modern artists. Former Yes front man Jon Anderson’s adaptation of “Shaker Loops” has a shimmering energy and a wonderful array of sounds. Steve Reich’s “Electric Counterpoint” has been described as a mysterious mix of surprise and inevitability. Bon Iver’s “Woods” is perhaps his most contemplative and beautiful compositions. It’s augmented by a mantra-like progression from Michael Gordon’s “Gene Takes A Drink.” The folky electronica of the Books appears in “The Animated Description of Mr. Map.” Finally, “Dense” by the experimental Belgian band Univers Zero galvanizes listeners and performers alike. CrBuosstoanders CONQUEST Founded in 1940, the Boston Crusaders is the third oldest junior drum and bugle corps in the nation and is proud to be a founding member of Drum Corps International. As the organization celebrates its 75th Anniversary this season, Conquest, the title of Boston’s 2015 show, is sure to resonate with longtime fans and alumni. While the movement on the field will be of epic proportions, the music will also have a cinematic flavor. Selections include the theme from Game of Thrones, along with music by Karl Jenkins, Brian Tyler, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Hans Zimmer, and original work by Ryan George and Ellis Hampton. But for many, the highlight will be the theme that gives the show its title: Alfred Newman’s “Conquest,” a piece that’s long been a Crusaders anthem. The Cadets THE POWER OF 10 The Cadets like to say “move fast, play fast, and create effect through your efforts.” That idea is well-suited to Symphony No. 10, Dmitri Shostakovich’s intensely personal piece that inspired The Power of 10. The solemn first movement is his interpretation of life in the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin. It’s followed by one of the composer’s most unique creations, a high-speed, violent scherzo (supposedly a portrait of Stalin himself). The third movement expresses Shostakovich’s infatuation with his student Elmira Nazirova. Her theme, carried by the horn, seems distant and unattainable. The fourth movement is for Shostakovich himself: His theme appears prominently in the finale before “Stalin’s theme” returns—only to be overcome by the composer’s own theme in one of music’s liveliest and most exciting finishes. Stalin’s dead, Shostakovich lives. He has survived. Symphony No. 10 by Dmitri Shostakovich Diane and Camilla (from Mulholland Drive) by Angelo Badalamenti 62 2015 DCI Souvenir Yearbook

CroCawrolnina INFERNO Inferno is the first part of Italian poet Dante Alighieri’s 14th-century work, the Divine Comedy. In it, Dante is guided by the Roman poet Virgil on a journey through Hell, which is depicted as nine circles of suffering located within the earth. Allegorically, the Divine Comedy represents the journey of the soul toward God, with “Inferno” describing man’s recognition—and rejection—of sin. Carolina Crown uses sound and imagery to transform the field into a dramatic depiction of Hell as the audience follows Dante and Virgil’s cathartic journey through the various rings of sins and sinners. Entering at the Gates of Hell, braving the harsh environments, facing Satan in the ninth ring, and ultimately escaping back to the surface of the earth, the performers deliver a thoughtful and emotional program rich with sinful imagery. Crossmen ABOVE & BEYOND “It may be that those who do most, dream most.” Stephen Butler Leacock’s famous quote has long been an inspiration for those who hope to make their dreams come true. And those words summed up the ethos of the early and mid 20th Century, when things like aviation—once regard- ed as fantasy—first became a reality. With Above & Beyond, the 2015 Crossmen bring the sentiment behind this quote into fruition. Underscored by musical selections that evoke man’s desire to travel the air, Above & Beyond focuses on both dreaming and doing. The visual imagery sends us skyward as clouds, wings, kites, and paper airplanes fill the field. Jersey Surf SUNSURFING Celebrating the group’s 25th anniversary, Jersey Surf’s SunSurfing evokes images of warmth, light, and those long summer days on the Garden State’s famous sparkling beaches. Before the party is ready to start, however, the Surf reminds us that the sun was once worshiped as a god, using world percussion instruments to give the opening movement a spiritual undertone. But in EMBRACING THE SUN, a more modern form of “sun worship” takes over, expressed by a reggae-tinged rendition of Elton John’s “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” featuring steel drums as warm as a tropical breeze. ScMoaduistosn 78TH & MADISON When it comes to combining musical artistry with athleticism on the football field, no one compares to the performers in DCI groups. And in the golden age of the movie musical, no one blended refined artistic grace with raw athletic power like dancer, actor, and singer Gene Kelly. More than a half-century after he appeared in classic MGM musicals like On The Town, Singin’ in the Rain, An American In Paris, and many others, his work still makes your jaw drop. Such MGM classics are the inspiration behind 78th & Madison, a show that draws from the energy, color, and uplifting entertainment of Hollywood’s greatest musicals. The soundtrack includes music from films like Summer Stock (“Get Happy”) Meet Me in St. Louis (“The Boy Next Door”), Girl Crazy (“I Got Rhythm), and, of course, Singin’ in the Rain (“Gotta Dance,” “Good Morning,” and “Moses”). Mandarins RESURRECTION In a field, buried and forgotten, the Terracotta Warriors slept for centuries, waiting for the call to arise and defend their emperor. Over four move- ments, we witness the Resurrection of this mighty army created to bring honor and glory to Xi’an. I. THE AWAKENING: At the call of the ceremonial drum, the stone is rolled away and the terracotta army rises. II. WARRIOR: An army cannot exist without a leader and the emperor’s daughter emerges to gain the trust and support of the powerful ranks that unite under her command. III. THE DYNASTY OF THE EMPEROR: Under the new regime, the warriors undergo rigorous training so they are prepared for battle. IV. FOREVER IN STONE: The Terracotta Army stands with honor before the power and majesty of the emperor. They exist to defend him here and in the afterlife—forever in stone. CrOruegsoan ders THE MIDNIGHT GARDEN Inspired by the magic of classic fairytales and fantasy stories, The Midnight Garden is set on the grounds surrounding a prince’s castle. The action begins with the color guard decorated to represent gothic statues, while the brass and percussion wear green and black to represent the foliage in the castle garden. Plants and statues come to life at the stroke of midnight as vines rapidly creep up and around the garden walls. The statues and the foliage begin to dance together as the garden comes into full bloom. But as morning approaches, this magical party is about nearing its end: There is a race to return everything to its original place before the clock tolls six times to signal the dawning of a new day. As the garden returns to its pre-midnight state, we’re left with the question: “When one spell ends, where does that magic go?” Selections from Cinderella Suite No. 1, Op. 107 I. Introduction III. Pacific Crest THE CATALYST A mysterious artifact has arrived. We aren’t sure where it came from or why it is even here. We call it The Catalyst. A catalyst is an agent that provokes or speeds significant change or action; as the performers react to it, the music changes from dark and aggressive to light and regal. And like a chemical catalyst, this one also changes as it reacts to the performers. The production is developed around Eric Whitacre’s vocal transcription of “Enjoy the Silence” by Depeche Mode. Whitacre’s treatment of this tune feels both haunting and hopeful. Its atmosphere at the beginning of the program is eerie and unsettling. By the end, it feels positive and optimistic. Placed around it are musical works by Prokofiev, Uematsu, and Ticheli, which reflect the reaction initiated by The Catalyst as the show progresses from chaos and conflict to an optimistic and consonant resolution. Pioneer EXODUS The glittering shamrocks on the trademark U.S. Marine Corps-styled white caps, need no introduction for the Irish Corps, the Pioneer from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. For Exodus, the group reinterprets music from the films The Ten Commandments and Exodus: Gods and Kings to tell a biblically inspired story of monumental struggle. An Exodus is defined as a mass departure of people, especially emigrants, and the production’s musi- cal and visual elements offer all of the highs and lows to match the action. From a Hittite battle in the desert to the parting of the Red Sea that allowed Moses to lead the Israelites on their Exodus from Egypt, Pioneer will take you on a journey that more than 600,000 people once made. Whenever possible this “Corps With No Borders” will troop the stands, passing in review with its theme song, “The Garry Owen March.” Selections from The Ten Commandments by Elmer Bernstein Selections from Exodus Gods and Kings by Alberto Iglesias 86 2015 DCI Souvenir Yearbook

VaSanntgauClaarra d THE SPARK OF INVENTION In 2015, Santa Clara Vanguard reimagines its innovative roots with The Spark of Invention. Inspired by the sweeping and spellbinding genius of Nikola Tesla, the show rockets through a kaleidoscope of ideas, emotions, and inventions. It bears witness to the thrilling moment when an idea first springs to life, or when what was once familiar transforms into something unexpected and new. A provocative soundtrack emerges through four distinctive pieces, taking us on an odyssey of musical innovation that journeys from early Western classical to ultramodern. Each of the show’s four scenes presents us with a single, dramatic spark of creativity: From electricity to technology, passionate music to breathtaking movement, props to musical effects, the show becomes the very act of invention right before our eyes—revealing the spark within us all. AtlaSpnirtitaof OUT OF THE ASHES After any community has been devastated by disaster, those affected find themselves shocked and questioning how such a catastrophic event could happen to them. Fear, hopelessness, and despair ensue in the disaster’s aftermath. A pervasive sense of loss consumes all of us as we begin the search for answers to “Why us?” “How?” and “Where do we go from here?” However, as is the case with all tragedies, there comes the opportunity to strengthen our community and the things that bind us together. Pain leads to struggle; struggle leads to perseverance— and perseverance leads to triumph. The great Atlanta fire of 1917 was the original inspiration for Out of the Ashes, yet the show is also about the internal fire or passion within each of us, the one that comes to life when our backs are against the wall—the perseverance to survive. Troopers WILD HORSES In today’s fast paced world, many of us wish we could just run free with the wind in our hair like Wild Horses of the American West—to experi- ence some of their power, beauty, strength, and grace. Scene one brings us into the wide-open spaces of the West as a herd of wild horses runs free. Efforts to tame and fence the herd all prove unsuccessful as the equines roam through the land that is rightfully theirs. Scene two sees one from the herd being fenced in with attempts to tame its wild soul. The lone horse looks out onto the open lands and yearns to run free again with the rest of her herd. In the final scene, we see her rejoin the herd and regain her freedom. But furious attempts are still being made to capture and tame the entire group. The exciting conclusion features all of the wild horses in a moment that will not soon be forgotten. Open Spaces by Robert W.
