CORPS

Welcome Lizzie Miller A word from one of Drum Corps Drum Major International’s marching members 2015 Blue Stars Almost everyone has a “go-to” place—a home where you can be your most raw, authentic self. For the 5,000-plus members of DCI groups, this place is the field. During the day it smells of sunscreen, sweat, and dirty rehearsal clothes. At night it radiates an unforgettable energy; a mix of excitement, tension, and expectations. On behalf of the all the members who will be on that field in 2015: Welcome to our home!Whether this is your first show or you’ve been follow- ing drum corps for years, you are now part of our family.Tonight, we can’t wait to show how much performing for you means to us. For weeks, we have battled exhaustion, bad weather, bus breakdowns, and more.We have practiced lights on and lights off and have banded togeth- er to push our limits further than ever before. We have tried to transform notes on a page and small coordinates programmed into a computer into a moving, breathing reality of perfection. Although there are bumps and bruises along our path, our love for per- forming will always outweigh any setbacks. When we’re on the field, we feel more alive than at any other time. It seems as though the world has stopped and the entire universe boils down to our group of life-long brothers and sisters in a stadium. We perform for our volunteers, administrators, and cooks; without these dedicated heroes, our organizations could not exist or function. They tireless- ly give their time to us, and our simple “thank yous” in the food lines will never be enough. Next, we play for our staff:They teach the true meaning of inspiration and dedication. Most importantly though, we perform for you, the audience: those who drove three hours to hear an 80-member brass line play a warm-up exercise, those who brought their high school students hoping to inspire them to practice more, and those families who came out to support their kids on and off the field. Thank you for dedicating your time to us, and we hope you enjoy our per- formances. If something looks good, sounds good, or makes you feel good— cheer for us! Remember, while you’re here to see us, we’re also here for you. Sincerely, 3

Welcome Drum Corps International Office of the Executive Director 110 W. Washington St., Suite C Indianapolis, Indiana 46204 Welcome to the 2015 Drum Corps InternationalTour and the DCI World Daniel E. Acheson Championships. Today you will witness the relentless pursuit of excel- Executive Director/CEO lence combined with the joy of performance in each and every presentation.  Drum Corps International Over all the years I’ve been lucky enough to watch DCI corps in action, I never fail to be inspired by the mastery of design and execution. But the thing that stays with me the most is seeing how the experience transforms the lives of young people.  We sometimes get caught up in the competition between the corps, but it’s important to remember the amazing human beings behind the uniforms. They truly transcend the drum corps stage and scoreboard. To know one of these performers is to know someone bound for greatness in the years ahead. While my bias may be obvious, I believe that a society full of young people like them—committed to excellence as well as to each other—will never flounder. Of course, they’d never be able to reach their potential on the field or off without the helping hands of many dedicated people. We’re grateful for the support of all of the DCI families, friends, fans, volunteers, sponsors, and teachers who complete the experience for our members.Whether it’s through your presence in the stands or your hard work behind the scenes, know that your presence is felt at each and every show. Thank you for making the effort to be with us this summer. Enjoy the enter- tainment, the virtuosity, and the fellowship that is the drum corps experience. Sincerely, 4 2015 DCI Souvenir Yearbook

1953 The Boston Cru Celebrating Persistence, Perseverance and Success for 2014 34 2015 DCI Souvenir Yearbook

75saders at Three Quarters of a Century BY JON CHAPPELL “Persistence is the key that unlocks the door to success.” For Boston Crusaders, these words are more than a motto. They also sum up the never- say-die attitude that has kept the group going for 75 years and counting. At times over that span, it may have seemed like persistence was the only thing keeping the corps on its feet. But the group did persist to eventually regain its stature among the world’s best marching music ensembles. The group’s history reads a bit like a detective story or thriller—one with plenty of plot twists and near catastrophes along the way, but with a happy end- ing and a blueprint for the future. 35

Musicians have always been technology junkies. Why else would the ancients have switched from nature’s animal horns to man-made metal ones? From the violin to the piano to the valved trumpet, drum set, electric guitar, synthesizer, and beyond, technical innovation has both driven—and been driven by—musical innovation. Today, music technology is more mainstream than ever before. Among professionals, computers and digital instruments have been common tools for over a quarter century. Yet with the right apps, the average person’s smartphone can easily outmuscle even the most advanced music computers of a few years ago. “Today’s drum corps members don’t know the world without tools like iPods, computers, mobile devices, etc.,” says Jersey Surf director Bob Jacobs. “So it makes sense to figure out how these tools can be used in a drum corps context while maintaining the same level of creativity and execution that makes the activity what it is.” “Electronics may be fairly new to drum corps, but they’ve been around for decades in music of all genres,” adds Bluecoats pro- gram coordinator DeanWestman. “We try to use them in a way that is true to the spirit of the original work and entertaining to the fans.” According to John Mlynczak, director of education at music 42 2015 DCI Souvenir Yearbook
