phantom Regiment ”Into the Light“ Over the previous five years, Phantom Regiment has excelled at bringing the stories of characters—be they human, animal, or the stuff of legend—to life on the field. In contrast, Into the Light doesn’t fol- low a narrative; instead, the show expresses the life cycle with all its ups and downs. Numerous episodes are inspired by Michael Kamen’s symphonic tone poem, The New Moon in the Old Moon’s Arms, which the composer has described as “a glimpse of the future in the light of the past.” An “Awakening,” like the simple beauty of the opening of a flower, sets the soul on its life-long voyage, though parts of the “Journey” of adolescence leads to some challenging moments. Later comes perspective through “Reflection,” as we take stock of the voyage thus far. In adulthood, major traumas and difficulties create some serious “Conflict,” but this is followed by a final “Discovery.” Finally, it’s time to walk “Into the Light” to experience the glorious beauty of a life well lived. 2010 REPERTOIRE TObhyldeMMNicheoawoelnMK’saomAoernmn isn the 100 2010 DCI Souvenir Yearbook

pioneer ”The Corps Prayer“ With a glittering shamrock gracing their trademark Marine Corps- style white caps, the Pioneer needs no introduction. At the end of every day and prior to every show, the Milwaukee, Wisconsin corps says a prayer of thanks for the opportunity to experience drum corps to the fullest. The Corps Prayer is inspired by this practice. The mostly pre-show “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” sets the mood and demonstrates how people offer personal devotion. The contemporary anthem “Make His Praise Glorious” communicates the prayer's opening line; “Thank you, Lord, for the togetherness and friendship we share, for the hard working members of the corps, and for the corps itself.” “The Prayer” features a trumpet and baritone duet, epitomizing, “Instill in us the true spirit of competition, taking the pain of losing and the joy of winning and all with a smile.” An original percussion solo in “Fantasie on the Doxology” conveys, “Remind us Lord, that by doing the very best we can at all times,” concluding with, “We WILL have a winning corps,” to the strains of “The Old Hundredth.” 2010 REPERTOIRE Swing Low, Sweet Chariot by Wallis Willis MbyaBkilel WHoilsavPerr,aRisoebinGWloorliaovuesr The Prayer Carole Bayer Sager by David Foster, FbyanDtoansniyeAollnent,hKeirkDGoaxyo, lAodgaym Hill Old Hundredth by Los Bourgeois 102 2010 DCI Souvenir Yearbook

Santa Clara Vanguard ”Bartók“ Béla Bartók is regarded as one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. His lifelong love of folk music made him one of the foremost champions of the use of ethnic melodies in orchestral music. In Bartók, Santa Clara Vanguard continues its exploration of artists who were pio- neers and major forces in their respective art forms. The folk music of Bartók's native Hungary greatly influenced his Concerto for Orchestra of 1943 (his last work) and his Music for Strings, Percussion and Celeste of 1936. The corps’ interpretations of these mas- terworks relies heavily on the creative staff’s decision to explore the composer’s intent, to honor his ingenuity and passion with an approach that leads one to suspect Bartók really had drum corps in mind when he composed the works. Throughout these selections, Bartók treats entire sections of instru- ments as soloists. It’s an approach that contributed mightily to his unique- ness and likewise fills this show with a delicate transparency that makes the music strikingly translucent. 2010 REPERTOIRE Concerto for Orchestra by Béla Bartók ManudsCicefloerstSetrings, Percussion by Béla Bartók 104 2010 DCI Souvenir Yearbook

Spirit ”Forging an Icon“ After several years of residence outside of Georgia, Spirit returns to Atlanta—its birthplace, longtime home and spiritual foundation. Also returning in a big way is the corps’ emblem, the iconic Spirit delta, originally designed to abstractly represent the first letter of the corps’ original and current hometown. Forging an Icon, set within the bustling, frenzied walls of a metal foundry, takes us through the stages of designing and producing the Delta, with moving and meshing parts of busy machines portrayed in glis- tening images and metallic clatter. After the plans are drawn, workers pour molten metal, then hammer, shape, cool and polish it into form until the Delta is ready to be revealed to the world. The busy foundry is said to closely parallel the building, crafting and shaping of the corps over its 34-year history. Like the story of American industrial might, which rose tall and built a nation, the show represents the dedication and determination of all who have worked toward the ideal of the Spirit Delta. 2010 REPERTOIRE PbyiaKneoithCEomnceresrotno No. 1 SbyymSeprgheoi nPyroNkoofi.ev5 in B Flat Major PbyreBleurdneard(frHoemrrmPasnnycho) Brooklyn Bridge by Michael Daugherty Serenada Schizophrana by Danny Elfman 106 2010 DCI Souvenir Yearbook

Teal Sound ”In the Presence of Enemies“ Teal Sound marches into Drum Corps International’s World Class in 2010 following an impressive run of six straight appearances in the Open Class Finals. During that run, the corps demonstrated a penchant for rocking out—even bringing a screaming guitar, bass and drums to the field in ’09. In the Presence of Enemies keeps the Teal Sound kicking out the jams with compositions by progressive rockers Dream Theater (including some solo work by that group’s keyboardist Jordan Rudess), along with a selec- tion by the modern masters of the rock concept album, Coheed and Cambria. Nothing is considered to be musically out of bounds as the corps brings its unique vision to the field. Director Randy Blackburn says, “Identity is very important to us, and the directions we want to move in can be classified to some as taking chances outside the realm of drum corps. But the way we look at it is very simple—entertain the crowd as if they were at a rock concert, and give them their money’s worth!” 2010 REPERTOIRE ObycDtorevaamriuThmeater Enemies In the Presence of by Dream Theater Ra/Feed the Wheel by Jordan Rudess GbyoDordenamighTht eKaitsesr The Running Free by Coheed and Cambria 108 2010 DCI Souvenir Yearbook

Troopers ”Wanted“ It’s nice to be wanted—unless, of course, being wanted means you’re the subject of a manhunt. Following up the corps’ first trip to the World Championship Finals since 1986, Troopers explore this more dangerous definition of the term with a repertoire that ranges from the rock of Bon Jovi to the postmodern soundtrack work of Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood to the classic music of iconic American composer Aaron Copland—and beyond. Wanted begins with the guard attired in white, while the rest of the corps sports a revitalized look inspired by its classic drum major uniform. Little by little throughout the show, however, the guard slips into the dark side, morphing from innocence to malevolence. Along the way, the bright musical tonalities that begin the show give way to sonic clashes full of sinister echoes. From the opening drama through the longing for a simpler time, and on to the intensity of the climactic epilogue, the visual imagery is often stark, reflecting the open expanse of the Wyoming landscape. 2010 REPERTOIRE WbyaJnothendBDoneJaodviO, RricAhlaivrdeSambora TbryitVtaiccola,vMNeolhvyebmelent 1 P(bfyrrooJvmoennnTyhLGearrneedenWswiolloBd e Blood) Our Town Suite by Aaron Copland Borinage Gordon by Michael JCoeunrtnreeyotfoththeeEarth by Peter Graham Night Flight Shift) (from Swing by Kenji Bunch 110 2010 DCI Souvenir Yearbook

Open Class BLUE DEVILS C Concord, CA ■ bluedevils.org ”Voyage at ‘C’“ The Blue Devils’ youngest group takes us on a sweeping high-seas adventure ride that explores foreign lands and lost treasures. Danger and excitement are brought to life with a program that includes selections ranging from Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Pirates of Penzance” to George Burns and Xavier Atencio’s “Yo Ho, Yo Ho (A Pirate’s Life for Me)” to original music by composer John M. Meehan. DIRECTOR: Rick Odello BLUE SAINTS Sudbury, ON ■ bluesaints.com ”The Struggle Within“ Selections from composer Danny Elfman’s atmospheric film soundtracks provide the framework for this Canadian corps’ expressive examination of the battle between good and evil. As this seemingly universal struggle ensues, we’re presented with decisions, dichotomies, conflict and—finally—sweet resolution. DIRECTOR: Mark Ripley CITY SOUND Long Beach, CA ■ city-sound.org ”Under Over“ Competing in Drum Corps International’s Open Class for the first time, City Sound brings the original rock opera to the field with selections from The Who’s magnum opus, Tommy. Telling the story of the boy who overcame the inability to see, speak or hear to become a Pinball Wizard, the visual design depicts the bright lights and action of a pinball game. DIRECTOR: Nathaniel Lewis COLT CADETS Dubuque, IA ■ colts.org ”Sorcerer’s Revenge“ Using the music of Andrew Boysen, Jr., Paul Dukas, and Stephen Schwartz, the Colt Cadets weave the classic tale of good versus evil as the sorcerers wrestle with the question of whether their magical powers should be used to help or hinder. The music moves from joyful balladry to ominous and thunderous percussion, inviting the audi- ence to expect the unexpected. DIRECTOR: Vicki Schaffer FORTE Grand Prairie, TX ■ fortecorps.org ”Stargazing“ Taking the field in Drum Corps International competition for the first time, Forte explores the stars. Man’s eternal fascination with space is underscored by the music of contemporary film and modern classical composers in a show that adds a new age twist to works by James Horner, Phillip Glass, Béla Bartók, James Newton Howard, and Gustav Holst. DIRECTOR: Chris Green 129

Hall of fame Drum Corps International salutes the three new members elected for induction into the prestigious DCI Hall of Fame in 2010. These individuals will be recognized for their accomplishments during the 2010 World Championships in Indianapolis. RAYMOND J. BAUMGARDT Remembered as one of drum corps’ most prolific and innovative music arrangers, the late Ray Baumgardt broke artistic barriers with such early “concept shows” as the Madison Scouts’ “Alice in Wonderland” and Cavaliers’ “Circus Show” in 1971, and many others. As Madison Scouts musical director from 1969-79, Baumgardt helped return a struggling corps to elite status, but his influence reached even farther thanks to his work with Spirit of Atlanta, Cavaliers, Troopers, 27th Lancers, Colts, Capitolaires and the Erie Thunderbirds Senior Corps. Baumgardt’s “creative genius [set] a new direction creatively in the world of drum corps,” notes Hall of Fame brass arranger Wayne Downey. “Not one of us has ever surpassed Ray’s knack for sparking the connec- tion between music and audience,” adds arranger Frank Dorritie. “For many of us, Ray Baumgardt has occupied Hall of Fame status for years.” BRANDT CROCKER “Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the Drum Corps International World Championships!” The sound and look of drum corps may have undergone many changes since its inaugural season of 1972, but those words, and the voice behind them, have remained a touchstone through the decades—not bad for a guy who was basically winging it the first time out! Before donning the mic, Crocker helped the legendary Jim Jones manage the Troopers, one of the 12 founding members of DCI. When he was pressed into service at the first Championship in Whitewater, Wis., “Brandt had no script, no real precedent to guide him, and no clear instructions about what he should, or should not say,” says drum corps historian Michael Boo. “When the first corps in prelims was ready to step off, Brandt simply said, ’On the starting line...’ For the next few decades, those four memorable words started all major drum corps competitions.“ ROBERT W. SMITH Of Smith’s many achievements—helping Florida’s Suncoast Sound develop into a consistent Finalist in the 1980s; establishing the Magic of Orlando and bringing that corps to the Finals; writing musical arrangements for the Velvet Knights, Spirit of Atlanta, Glassmen and the Cadets—perhaps none has more lasting influence than that of “Florida Suite,” his 1985 Suncoast Sound show that was the first to exclusively feature music composed specifically for a drum corps. Hall of Fame member Jay Kennedy (’07) has called the “Suite” one of the “seminal events in the development of the drum corps activity.” While the noted school band composer and member of the prestigious American Bandmaster’s Association elevated the activity’s educational profile, it was his ability to synchronize drum corps’ musical and visual elements that “changed the way all of us looked at putting shows together,” says arranger Jay Bocook (‘09). “The music was like a great soundtrack to a film.” 144 2010 DCI Souvenir Yearbook
