greetings! pms 384c pms 152c pms 247c pms 2395c old color A word from one of Drum Corps International’s marching members. Welcome to the 2010 Drum Corps International Tour! Today, hun- ALISON BAIER dreds of young adults will have the opportunity to share with you their talent as well as their passion for the marching arts. DRUM MAJOR‚ JERSEY SURF While the word “tour” may evoke images of extravagant buses and rock-star caliber VIP treatment, being “on the road” at times can be any- thing but glamorous. To the performers, “tour” means lining a football field at sunrise, sleeping on gymnasium floors, traveling hundreds of miles, and rehearsing hours a day for months! Whether we are complet- ing our responsibilities off the field, or perfecting our performance on the field, every member of each organization has a common goal in mind— to achieve the perfect performance. That performance is what you are about to witness. On the road to the perfect performance, each member experiences both a personal and shared journey across the entire corps. Under the guidance of a knowledgeable and enthusiastic instructional staff, each member matures as a per- former. In rehearsal, all corps members and staff work together to improve their production, recog- nizing that without one single member, the show could change dramatically for everyone. Through this shared experience on the field, and relationships made and strengthened over the course of the tour, a corps becomes a fam- ily. Today, you become a part of this family. The fans of Drum Corps International provide us with the opportunity to display our hard work, and to share with you our show that we have grown to love. The perfect performance would be incom- plete without your support and your applause. So enjoy the show, and this the 2010 Drum Corps International Tour! Sincerely, Alison Baier 3

greetings! pms 384c pms 152c pms 247c pms 2395c old color DRUM CORPS INTERNATIONAL Office of the Executive Director 110 W. Washington St., Suite C Indianapolis, Indiana 46204 My Dear Friends: It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the DANIEL E. ACHESON 2010 Drum Corps International Tour and World Championships. I am delighted you’ve decided to spend this time engaging in the arts and EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR/CEO in our very special art form, and grateful for your support of one of the world’s truly spectacular youth activities. The drum corps experience continues to flourish worldwide as a deep-rooted niche activity but presents itself through numerous other fine arts and performing arts endeavors as well. Leading up to their participation in Marching Music’s Major League, the performers on the field tonight likely spent time as part of an indoor drum line, winter color guard, or perhaps a concert or marching band, under the tutelage of music educators and marching arts professionals from around the world. Along with showing our appreciation for these outstanding young people and those who have helped to shape them academically, we are equally indebted to the parents and boosters who dedicate countless hours supporting their children in the pursuit of excel- lence. Thanks to their guidance and support, nearly three out of five drum corps members have chosen the study and teaching of music as their career path. By standing up for them this evening you are standing up for the future of music in our schools and its far reaching effects on the leaders of tomorrow. Tonight you will undoubtedly feel the awesome power of brass and percussion coming right at you. Add-in the spectacular color guard performance and breathtaking visual drill, and I guarantee you will be moved in your seat! These amazing performers are relentless in their pursuit of the ultimate performance. While you’re taking it all in, I dare you to look into their eyes. Watch out, because they will touch your soul if you do. Thank you again for attending this event, and I hope that you will thoroughly enjoy the incredible drum corps experience about to unfold in front of you! Sincerely, Daniel E. Acheson 4 2010 DCI Souvenir Yearbook

o say that there’s a lot going on during a drum corps performance is a huge understatement. Large groups of musicians execute one intensely demanding technical maneuver after another in perfect unison. At the same time, many of them are pulling off intricately choreographed move- ments that most observers would be hard pressed to replicate—even without the added challenge of having drums strapped to their chests. Meanwhile, the color guard is performing its own spectacular acrobatic feats nearby. And in the midst of it all, cap- tion judges are darting from one area of the field to another, getting nearly as much exer- cise as the corps members. Judges are always trying to evaluate just how hard there is more challenging than it may seem,” Sodawalla adds. “Some combinations of faster tempos and larger steps with rudimental patterns in odd meters may never be caught [by the average fan]. And as much as everyone loves a good company front [marching formation in which a line of performers stand side by side in a row], straight lines and boxes are probably the hardest things to pull off” Nobody can be perfect all the time, and even the best corps make mistakes. Sometimes those mis- takes may be obvious; a member might slip and fall, or drop a flag. Yet in the end that corps may still receive a higher score than another that made no such error. Why? Because the judges are considering the quality of the corps’ full performance. “It’s like figure skating,” Phillips says. “People think it’s a disaster when a skater falls on the ice, but if you go back to the rest of that skater’s program and look at how precisely his skates were landing in slow motion, you may see things differently. If a corps gives itself more opportunities for achievement throughout a show, the overall picture can make up for any one mishap.” Corps Personality Veteran observers will tell you that one of the most enjoyable parts of a drum corps performance is see- ing how each group displays its individuality. “I’ve always thought that one year all the corps 46 2010 DCI Souvenir Yearbook

The Blue Devils never have a moment when the picture is unbalanced. The Cadets make you look around. The Cavaliers bring the show to you. The Glassmen are all about adding layers. The Boston Crusaders may be the most interest- ing of all; they’ve had a very traditional character and identity since 1940, but somehow they figure out how to make the most modern show possible. “We love it when corps meet our expectations and then surprise us,” Cesario continues, “but some things don’t match a group’s personality, and some things just go the importance of the “product”—the complete audiovi- out of fashion.
