GREETINGS A word from one of Drum Corps International’s marching members. W elcome to the 2011 Drum Corps International Tour! We are about to go on a journey together. It’s a journey of courage, persever- ance, and unwavering passion that culminates here with you right here, right now. The sun rises. Gymnasium lights softly hum as the symphony of deflating air-mattresses signal the start of another day. The familiar smell of sunscreen fills the air as rehearsal is about to start. Sweat drips off of chins as hours go by in the unforgiving heat. Minds relentlessly push as bodies fight off soreness and fatigue. Though rehearsal ends, our work isn’t fin- ished. Teams of corps members scatter across the rehearsal facility. Bathrooms are wiped cleaned, garbage is taken to dumpsters, the gym floor the corps slept on is swept, and the equipment truck is loaded. The facility THOMPSON is left spotless—cleaner than when the VOU corps arrived. We get on the bus and voy- age to the stadium. Drum Major, Boston Crusaders It’s time. The corps lines up at the starting line as the performance is about to start. This is the payoff. This performance is for you. For all the obstacles surmounted. For all the physical and mental stress conquered. For all the sweat and tears shed. For all the friendships and bonds forged. It’s for you, the fans. As the performing corps members we would like to thank you. Thank you for your applause, for your enthusiasm, and for sharing this unforgettable experience with us. Your support helps keep us going. With that in mind, don’t be shy about standing up and cheering! We want you to enjoy the show. Sincerely, Thompson Vou 3

GREETINGS DANIEL E. ACHESON Executive Director/CEO Drum Corps International Office of the Executive Director 110 W. Washington St., Suite C Indianapolis, Indiana 46204 W elcome to the 2011 Drum Corps International Tour and the 40th DCI World Championships! Can you hear that distant beat of percussion, the unison whoosh of flags, or that angelic brass sound? What you’re hearing is the best marching musicians on the planet warming up and preparing to blow you away. Once they take the field, these young performers have the ability to make your feet leave the ground without you realizing it, and they’ll keep it coming until you’re in an absolute frenzy. On behalf of the member and participating corps of Drum Corps International, I’d like to thank you for joining us for another exciting season. We are grateful for the moms and dads, sisters and brothers, friends and fami- lies who come to the stadium to support their corps members. We are equally grateful to all those who have participated in this remarkable activity who keep returning to “give back;” from the purchase of a ticket to a member sponsor- ship to the most precious gift of all – the donation of your time. It takes more than it ever has to make the drum corps experience available to the more than 5,000 young people who participate each year. With lots of fans in the stands, even beyond the economics, our family is more complete. Thank you! Many of you will assume that if you see these corps once this season it will be enough. But I guarantee that they will leave you wanting more. Don’t be shy; keep coming back! We’ll leave the stadium lights on for you. Sincerely, Daniel E. Acheson Executive Director/CEO Drum Corps International 4 2011 DCI Souvenir Yearbook

1961 was a year of firsts. Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space. A little rock group called the Beatles performed for the first time at the Cavern Club. The world’s earliest working robot became part of the assembly line at General Motors. 1961 also marked the birth of two drum corps that continue to perform to this day— the groups now known as Pioneer and Glassmen—who celebrate their golden anniversaries this season. Imperial Beginnings Today’s Pioneer Drum and Bugle Corps began life as the Imperials of Saint Patrick (1961) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, when the church’s pastor, Fr. Blenski, who is Pioneer’s current direc- tor and a 1991 DCI Hall of Fame induct- ee, remembers his first day with the Imperials. “I showed up to find 90 kids, none of whom had any instruments!” To fix this situation Blenski bought a handful of budget mouthpieces and passed around his horn so that his stu- dents could get a feel for the instrument. He also had them practice percussion by banging drumsticks on tables. He came up with a clever incentive to get the kids—all antsy junior high students—to show up for practice. “I scheduled prac- tice from six to eight and a basketball game from eight to ten,” he says. “They could only play basketball if they were there for the whole rehearsal!” 42 2011 DCI Souvenir Yearbook
