LAelegxaacnyder’s 7th Regiment Alexander Nevsky I t’s 1242 AD and Alexander Nevsky is a prince of the fledgling Imperial Russia, a reluctant warrior who prizes peace and politics by Sergei Prokofiev above violence. The show opens with the city of Pskov in flames, pillaged by German Teutonic Knights. Alexander calls his countrymen, mostly peas- ants, to battle against the invaders. Swords, axes, bows, and arrows replace farming tools as a great battle ensues over a frozen lake where the horses and equipment of the Knights prove no match for the tactics and mobility of the Russian militia. Canonized as a saint by the Orthodox church, Alexander’s Legacy lives on in Russian hearts and minds. International Class Drum Corps International’s TAIPEI YUEHFU, 2013 INTERNATIONAL CLASS CHAMPION International Class is comprised of corps from outside North America that often travel long distances to perform as part of the annual DCI Tour. In this class, corps are allowed to follow their own country’s organi- zational guidelines. If they choose to recognize DCI rules, they are allowed to compete for the Open Class title. Over the years, groups have traveled from England, The Netherlands, Japan, and Taiwan to march alongside and compete against their American and Canadian counterparts. This season, DCI is proud to welcome two first-time nations to the International Class represented by Patria and Northeastern Technology. Patria uet altenango, uatemala • acebook.com patriadrumcorps SHOW TBA: When its members take their initial steps in Drum Corps International performance this season, Patria Drum and Bugle Corps will become the first-ever group from the Central American nation of Guatemala to take part in the DCI Summer Tour. Already blazing a trail by establishing corps- style performance in its own patria (which is Spanish for “homeland”), the group says of its debut marching alongside DCI corps: “Nuestro sueño se hará realidad”—Our dream will come true. Director Gaba Estrada Northeastern Technology hon aen, hailand • acebook.com thenortheasterntechnology THE CYCLIST: Following the success of fellow countrymen E-Sarn in 2013’s DrumLine Battle Championship in Indy, Northeastern Technology of Khon Kaen, Thailand, hopes to become the first full-sized drum and bugle corps from that nation to take the field in DCI action. Inspired by racing, the group’s 2014 show, “The Cyclist,” will unfold over the course of four exciting movements: Opener, Driving Force, Go to Dreams, and Finish Line. Director Yanisa Pukpo 129

Hall of Fame Drum Corps International will be proud to welcome five new members into the DCI Hall of Fame during the 2014 World Championships in Indianapolis. Mark Arnold EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, BLUE KNIGHTS As Blue Knights director since 1985, MarkArnold is among the longest serving active drum corps leaders. After starting as an instructor with Troopers, Arnold became the group’s tour director and came under the tutelage of legendary director Jim Jones. By 1991, Arnold had transformed the Blue Knights into perennial DCI Finalists, and under his tenure, the Denver-based group evolved into the multifaceted Ascend Performing Arts organization, which includes the drum corps, an indoor percussion program, and the official drum and brass ensembles of the NFL’s Denver Broncos. In 2012, Arnold was the first recipient of the annual George Bonfiglio Chairman’s Award. Bill Cook FOUNDER, STAR OF INDIANA Innovative, generous, and even a bit controversial—Star of Indiana founder Bill Cook (1931-2011) left his mark on the drum corps community through both his passion to win and his willingness to help Star’s competitors. Fueled by the energy that had driven his medical equipment company’s rise to the top, Cook founded Star of Indiana in 1985 and invested both his money and his time to make the organiza- tionWorld Champions. After reaching the summit 1991, the group disbanded in 1993 to create theTony Award winning show Blast!. But by then, Cook’s revolutionary business-focused approach had set the stage for the way today’s successful DCI organizations operate. John Simpson BRASS INSTRUCTOR, BRIDGEMEN, SKY RYDERS, STAR OF INDIANA You could always tell when a brass section was under John Simpson’s direction. Be it Bridgemen, Sky Ryders, Star of Indiana, or others, it delivered the tone quality and intonation that he considered essen- tial. Starting in the 1960s with the U.S. Air Force Drum & Bugle Corps and, later, the New York Skyliners, Simpson helped develop new techniques to overcome the limitations of the era’s rudimentary (by today’s standards) bugles, creating arrangements that brought new harmonic sophistication to the drum corps field. In addition to developing new instruments, Simpson pushed to make musicianship a more important part of the scoring system, setting the groundwork for DCI’s musical excellence. Timothy Salzman BRASS ARRANGER, GUARDSMEN, SANTA CLARA VANGUARD, CAVALIERS WhenTimothy Salzman’s drum corps career began with Guardsmen in 1978, musicality wasn’t the pri- ority it is today. Using his background as an educator, he helped elevate on-field brass performance to the quality of the concert hall. In 1981, he joined Santa ClaraVanguard and helped lead the group to the World Championship. Later that decade, he began a long affiliation with the Cavaliers, turning the group into a model for brass performance—and World Champions in 1992 and ’95. After leaving the drum corps arena in the late ’90s, Salzman became a professor of music at the University of Washington and continues to travel the world as a conductor, arranger, and author. Kevin Smith FOUNDER, CAROLINA CROWN Twenty years is a long run for a corps director, let alone one with the word“interim” attached to his title. Kevin Smith, who helped form the Carolina Crown organization in 1988, was only supposed to lead the group until a permanent director was found. That didn’t happen until 2010, when current director Jim Coates took over day-to-day operations. Over that time, Smith, a volunteer with a full-time job, guided the group through a move from North to South Carolina, a DCI Div. II Championship title, entry into theWorld Class, and emergence as a perennialWorld Championship contender. Now the president of the Crown board, Smith stays actively involved with the organization and still travels with the corps throughout the summer. 143
