Madison Time Trip Scouts Fanfare for the New T ime Trip explores the evolution of big band jazz by contrasting the styles of Stan Kenton and Don Ellis—two giants who defined the by Hugo Montenegro genre in their respective eras. Kenton is up first. With visuals that call to mind the “black-and-white” late 1950s and early ’60s, we hear “Fanfare for Fugue (from Passacaglia & Fugue) the New,” “Fugue (from Passacaglia & Fugue),” and “Concerto to End All Concertos”—all performed in the accessible and audience-friendly arrange- by J.S. Bach, arr. by Allyn Ferguson ments that harken back to conventions of the swing era, a Kenton specialty. Then time shifts to the mid ’60s and early ’70s, when Ellis came into his Concerto to End All Concertos own. The images get wilder and more colorful—and so does the music, reflecting Ellis’ more progressive approach. Can a song with a 33/16 time by Stan Kenton signature actually swing? “Bulgarian Bulge” provides the answer. It’s fol- lowed by “Star Children,” “Open Wide,” “Niner Two,” and “Final Analysis,” Bulgarian Bulge capping a high-energy show that does Kenton and Ellis proud. by Don Ellis Star Children by Don Ellis Open Wide by Don Ellis Niner Two by Don Ellis Final Analysis by Don Ellis STAFF Executive Director Chris Komnick Artistic Director James H. Oregon Nevermore Crusaders Mind Heist O regon Crusaders’ second season as a member of Drum Corps International’s World Class highlights one of the most popular works by Zach Hempsey by the great American writer Edgar Allan Poe. Nevermore uses music by Zach Hempsey, Kevin Walczyk, Paul Bissell, Viena Teng, and Samuel Barber Huanpango to underscore a program based on Poe’s masterful 1845 poem “The Raven,” which is celebrated as much for the style and musicality of its by Kevin Walczyk language as for the haunting story it tells—in which a distraught and griev- ing young man descends into madness while lamenting the loss of his The Alabados Song beloved, Lenore. The man narrates his encounter with a talking raven, who comes to his chamber and taps on his window. But rather than offer solace by Paul Bissell or even companionship, the black bird coldly amplifies the man’s pain, answering every entreaty with one devastating word: “Nevermore.” The Hymn of Acxiom by Viena Teng My Medea by Viena Teng Nocturn Op. 33 by Samuel Barber Medea’s Dance of Vengeance, Op. 23A by Samuel Barber STAFF Executive Director Mike Quillen Tour Director Tom Strecker Volunteer Coordinator Colleen Bledsoe Board President Dr. Philip Marshall Drum Majors Anna Quenemoen, Nick Bledsoe, Emma Phillips Design Todd Zimbelman (Program Coordinator), Travis Moddison (Music Director, Brass Arranger), JC Caceres (Visual Designer, Choreographer), Mike Stevens (Percussion Arranger), Chris Whyte (Front Ensemble Arranger), Jeremy Gill (Sound Effects Designer), Jonathan Meader (Choreographer) Brass Travis Moddison (Caption Supervisor), Bryan Thomas (Caption Head), Brian Beck, Stacey Garcia, Nick Maupoux, James Nufer, Ray Severns Percussion Mike Stevens (Caption Supervisor), Chris Whyte (Front Ensemble Caption Head), Micah Brusse, Charles (DJ) Carty, Elyse Emerich, Jeremy Gill, Alex Gross, Chase Higgins, Ian Kerr, Tarrin Neal, Rob Sullens Color Guard Charlotte Morrow (Caption Supervisor), Melissa Goodling (Caption Head), Katy Burns, Brittany Ham, Jonathan Meader, Nikki Moyo, Beth Refsnider Visual Ian Flint (Caption Supervisor), Michael Rayner (Caption Head), Austin Avery, Masen Bowers, Daniel Elred, Julie Lilliquist, Maximilian Logan, Michael Orrantia 84 2014 DCI Souvenir Yearbook
