CHRIS MAHER, CORPSREPS.COM OPEN CLASS CHRIS MAHER, CORPSREPS.COM GOLDEN EMPIRE BAKERSFIELD, CA • geperformingarts.org Discovering Gems Within • A weary traveler chances upon a hidden cave that leads under the earth. Within it, he finds four treasures. To the strains of Respighi’s “St. Michael the Archangel,” he discovers emeralds. Next are rubies, with Lewis J. Buckley’s “Tarantella Red” providing the soundtrack. Sapphires come third, their essence captured by Will Jennings and Joe Sample’s “One Day I’ll Fly Away.” Finally, our traveler happens upon diamonds, with energetic accompaniment from Karl Jenkins’ Palladio. DIRECTOR: Tim Heasley HEAT WAVE CAPE CORAL, FL • heatwaveofflorida.com Project Apollo • The third attempt to send a man 238,900 miles into space and onto the moon was initiated by President John F. Kennedy in the early 1960s and resulted in astronaut Neil Armstrong’s famous quote at the decade’s end: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Project Apollo will take the audience from the mission’s take-off to the moon landing and the return home. It will also portray humankind’s longstanding desire to reach the stars as the moon calls out to the astronauts. DIRECTOR: Jonathan Otero IMPULSE BUENA PARK, CA • impulseyoutharts.org In the Beginning • For 2017, Impulse depicts a moment when our ancient ancestors had to learn to walk upright and not become a predator’s next meal. The experiences they had are pre- sented as follows: “The Awakening” (Strauss’ Also Sprach Zarathustra); “The Hunt and Survival” (Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring); “Love and Emotions” (Khachaturian’s Adagio from Spartacus); “The Discovery of Fire” (Ruders’ Piano Concerto No. 2); and “The Ritual Ceremony of Fire” (de Falla’s “Ritual Fire Dance”). DIRECTOR: Michael Lopez INCOGNITO GARDEN GROVE, CA • incognitodbc.org La Belle du Bal • This coming-of-age story of a young girl’s rebellion against the times in 17th-century France incorporates music of various eras and genres. It begins with Camille Saint-Saëns’ “Danse Bacchanale” from the opera Samson and Delilah, then travels back 150 years to J.S. Bach’s “Minuet in G.” Claude Debussy’s “The Girl with the Flaxen Hair” brings us into the 20th century, and a pop artist with many intriguing hairstyles, Sia, deposits us in the present day— musically speaking—with “Chandelier.” DIRECTOR: Alex Gray DCI 45th Anniversary 123

CHRIS MAHER, CORPSREPS.COM OPEN CLASS LES STENTORS SHERBROOKE, QC • stentors.net The Red String of Fate • According to a Chinese myth, an invisible red string connects those who are destined to meet regardless of time, place, or circumstance. Once this connection has been made, the thread may stretch or tangle, but it will never break. This show tells the story of two soulmates and how the Red String of Fate keeps them tied together as they go through different phases of their relationship, facing various difficulties before finding perfect har- mony on their way to love and happiness. DIRECTOR: Gabe Franceour SHADOW OREGON, WI • shadowdbc.org Atreyu • A mystic child warrior faces the destruction of his world at the hands of The Nothing, a formless entity that feeds on fear, despair, greed, and loneliness. Atreyu’s fight mirrors our own, as we struggle to choose empathy and generosity in a world ever more saturated with hatefulness. Based on the movie The NeverEnding Story, this tale is told with the help of music from its soundtrack, composed by Klaus Doldinger and Giorgio Moroder, as well as Robert Prizeman’s “Salva Me” and Karl Jenkins’ “Dies Irae.” DIRECTOR: Nick Lane SOUTHWIND MOBILE, AL • joinsouthwind.org Toxic Mind • The “inner game” (as outlined in the book The Inner Game of Tennis) is a performer’s greatest enemy. It is a constant battle of concentration, anxiety, self-condemnation, anger, frustration, perfectionism, and fear. But it is also necessary; we must push through our worst doubts to reach the pinnacle of pure perfor- mance. With music originally recorded by Miley Cyrus, Radiohead, Stevie Wonder, Britney Spears, Muse, and more, this program asks the question: How do we overcome our toxic mind? DIRECTOR: Lawrence LeClaire WATCHMEN RIVERSIDE, CA • watchmenarts.org To Valhalla • In the world of the Vikings, there was no great- er honor for a warrior than to die on the battlefield. The Norse people believed that half of these warriors were selected by the mystical female Valkyries to enter Valhalla, an enormous hall where heroes and kings lived among the gods. In the Watchmen’s 2017 pro- gram, the great god Odin has summoned his Viking warriors to battle once again. Only the greatest shall rise with the Valkyries to achieve their ultimate goal of eternal life in Valhalla. DIRECTOR: David Becker DCI 45th Anniversary 125

INTERNATIONAL DCI’S INTERNATIONAL CLASS is composed of corps from outside North America that often travel long distances to perform as part of the annual DCI Tour. In this class, corps are allowed to follow their own country’s organizational guidelines. Over the years, groups have traveled from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Japan, Taiwan, Guatemala, and Thailand to march alongside and compete against their American and Canadian counterparts. This season, DCI is proud to welcome first-time visitors THE COMPANY from Chesterfield, England. THE COMPANY CHESTERFIELD, ENGLAND, UK • theco.org.uk Tomorrow, It’s Just Around the Corner • Founded in the fall of 2009, THE COMPANY has been a four-time Drum Corps Europe champion and a three-time Drum Corps United Kingdom champion. For its 2017 production, the all-age group accentuates the concept of the corner suggest- ed by the program title. L-shaped props harmonize with the designs of color guard costumes and drum wraps to convey a sense of anticipation, furthered by the music of Pat Metheny and staff member Andrew Markworth. THE COMPANY’s journey to tomorrow takes in what we already know and what we’ve learned along the way, ultimately reaching a place that is better than today.
