THE ACADEMY IB Y A H A R E Inspired by the infa- mous relationship between a well-known hunter and rabbit, By a Hare tells a come- dic tale in the general style of the 18th-century Italian opera buffa (comic opera). The music that moves the story along, however, comes from a variety of classic sources, including Edvard Grieg, Georges Bizet, Richard Wagner, Giuseppe Verdi, Franz Liszt, and modern-day com- poser Gordon Goodwin. The action takes place in a forest, where tree stumps serve as obstacles behind which characters can conceal themselves and safely taunt oth- ers before reappearing elsewhere. The story begins on the morning of a hunt, as the sunrise reveals our main protagonists. It’s the opening day of rabbit season, and the hunt is soon underway. A capture takes place, but is it real? Or has the hunt- er been the hunted all along? REPERTOIRE 1. Hare We Go Morning Mood (from Peer Gynt Suite No. 1) by Edvard Grieg 2. BLUE DEVILS IM E TA M O R P H In ancient epics and modern fantasy alike, metamorphosis (or shape shifting) is a common trope. Both the shaman and the showman have pondered its mystery and magic, which extends beyond its real-world nature as a biological process to become a broader metaphor for growth, evolution, and inspi- ration. To celebrate their diamond anniver- sary, the Blue Devils honor 60 years of individual and group transformations with a multi-layered musical and visual tribute to the past, present, and future. Metamorph resonates with music by com- posers such as Peter Graham and Simon Dobson and, at the program’s heart, the prophetic “Everything Must Change” by Bernard Ighner. Emerging from a cocoon of history, the corps moves in an upward trajectory, reflecting the legacy of past performers and the ascension of this California community of rhythmic dream- ers to the title of DCI’s most honored ensemble. BLUE KNIGHTS Ii The human eye has a unique ability to shed light on both the world around us and our understanding of ourselves and oth- ers. In i, the Blue Knights take as their sub- ject the splendors of all there is to see and all the ways we are seen. The show’s first segment evokes the blurry mix of wonder and apprehension that a person feels when waking up to the unknown. Part two is more intellectual, delving into the mechanics of the eye—those tiny inner workings that we take for granted every time we look around and focus our gaze. The emotional and introspective aspect of perception is the subject of part three, which explores the ways in which we interpret what we see and how we per- ceive ourselves in relation to others. In the final section, the corps moves into a medi- tation on the very human desire to be seen, and to make a mark on the world. Music of Beck, Joseph Schwantner, Björk, and Imogen Heap helps set the tone. BLUE STARS S TA R C R O S S E D I The Australian director Baz Luhrmann has made three films that draw on venerable literary sources to tell tales of star-crossed lovers. Romeo + Juliet (1996) is based on William Shakespeare’s tragic play, Moulin Rouge! (2001) takes its storyline from Alexandre Dumas’ play The Lady of the Camellias via the Verdi opera La Traviata, and The Great Gatsby (2013) is an adapta- tion of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel. These three movies, which arguably reach the status of modern classics themselves, have inspired the Blue Stars’ 2017 pro- gram. Seeing through the eyes of a writer, we witness the dramatization of themes that motivate many famous stories across time: triumph turning to tragedy, promis- ing chances going cosmically awry, love destined not to succeed. The music of Star Crossed comes mainly from songs associ- ated with Luhrmann’s films, the one major exception being a selection from Prokofiev’s 1938 ballet Romeo and Juliet. BOSTON CRUSADERS IW I C K E D G A M E S In June 1692, the special Court of Oyer and Terminer (“to hear and to decide”) con- vened in Salem, Massachusetts, under Chief Justice William Stoughton. The first person to be tried was Bridget Bishop, who was accused of witchcraft by more individuals than any other defendant. Known around town for her dubious moral character, Bishop frequented taverns, dressed flamboyantly (by Puritan stan- dards), and was married three times. She professed her innocence but was found guilty and ultimately executed. The Boston Crusaders’ 2017 production is based on the horrific trials of Bishop and her fellow Salem “witches.” The show opens in the woods, where the young and innocent gather to celebrate a full moon and sun- rise. They are discovered, accused, tor- tured, hunted, tried, convicted, and sen- tenced. As history teaches us, ignorance and fear breed hate while those in power play their wicked games. THE CADETS THE FAITHFUL, THE FALLEN, THE FORGIVEN I When the Cadets first brought Leonard Bernstein’s Mass to the field in 1983, they were crowned DCI World Champions. That summer kicked off a long love affair between the Cadets and Bernstein that has since seen the corps perform selec- tions from West Side Story, Symphony No. 1, the score to On the Waterfront, the Overture to Candide, the ballet Fancy Free, and more. Now, in cooperation with the Bernstein Office of New York City, the Cadets present The Faithful, The Fallen, The Forgiven, staged to—once again—the music of Mass. CAROLINA CROWN II T I S Deconstructivism is the art of breaking an object down to its base ele- ments; reshaping, relocating, and rear- ranging those elements; and presenting them in a new way. It Is takes a decon- structivist approach to the traditional drum corps model. Carolina Crown’s performers will attempt to meticulously disassemble the field, carefully laying out the separate components of a standard corps perfor- mance to provide a fresh perspective. In the deconstructivist spirit, this “art instal- lation” of sorts is unpredictable, with wild- ly dynamic changes in look, sound, and atmosphere over the course of the pro- gram. It also may evolve over time, as the members continue to explore a range of moods, from sophistication to mischief to reflectiveness to unabashed freedom. As DCI celebrates 45 years of performances that have left their mark on the drum corps stage, Crown is inspired by what was, what is, and what could be. THE CAVALIERS MEN ARE FROM MARS I Don’t worry:The Cavaliers aren’t really sug- gesting that men are Martians (although the use of Steve Vai’s “Little Green Men” does toy with that implication). The real theme of this program is the innate martial nature of men—their need to dominate, achieve, and conquer, which drives them to band together in tribes and secure power over territory and other people. As human society has evolved, men have struggled to shed such tendencies. The cerebral battles with the instinctual, and the warrior of Mars grapples to be what he is not. Men Are From Mars is a multifacet- ed audio and visual representation of that struggle, tracking how far man’s ego will take him and questioning whether it will ultimately destroy him. Through the use of by Metallica three Muses—Music, Art, and Literature— and guided by Imagination herself, the Land of Confusion corps will attempt to bring color and emo- tion in through the window of a gray room by Phil Collins that represents conformity and confusion. On the other side of the window is a new Habanera (from Carmen) world, where imagination runs free and, in the words of the British poet Arthur by Georges Bizet O’Shaughnessy (later spoken by Gene Wilder in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Both Sides Now Factory), “we are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams.” The by Joni Mitchell music made here includes compositions by Imogen Heap, Frank Ticheli, Metallica, Pure Imagination and Genesis (the rock band). by Leslie Bricusse/Anthony Newley 74 2017 Souvenir Yearbook

JERSEY SURF M A K E I T O U R O W N I An urban landscape that has fallen into despair provides the initial backdrop for the Jersey Surf’s 2017 production. The inhabitants of this particular city are mired in the mundane and the everyday at first. But soon they begin to undergo a transfor- mation, and as it progresses, they grow to understand that they have the ability to reimagine what has become dull and life- less. An inspired, joyous, artful existence is possible, and they can create it on their own terms. The city-dwellers reach an awareness that the future is theirs to define, and they must take ownership. Joining together their varied talents and energies, they succeed in bringing life, happiness, and vivid color to their world. This inspirational turnaround is accompa- nied by the music of the American jazz ensemble Snarky Puppy, Australian pop singer/songwriter Sia, and Polish jazz-pop singer/songwriter Basia. In movement two, the ink drips onto paper, which is then folded; the shapes Allure thus created are extremely chaotic and The Sound of Silence change quickly. OREGON CRUSADERS IE N c o m p a s s To encompass means to have or hold within. We encom- pass our experiences over time. When we hear music, it seems to encompass a mul- titude of feelings that are based on those experiences. The Oregon Crusaders’ 2017 production examines this theme in two principal ways. First, through the use of uniforms, flags, colors, and music, various corps performers will be “encompassed.” Second, through the use of props and drill, the corps will develop variations on the word “compass.” Fast-paced drill filled with tension and release alternates with more playful choreography featuring solo- ists and weapons. Passionate music becomes aggressive before “encompass- ing” all themes. Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations are the main source material, with Enya’s “Only Time” as secondary source material and U2’s “Where the Streets Have No Name” providing an ethe- real effect of directionless motion. PACIFIC CREST GOLDEN STATE OF MIND I From the coast of California, Pacific Crest navigates audiences through a world of curiosity, optimism, and discov- ery. It’s a voyage filled with emotional tur- moil, episodic adventure, and a belief that fulfillment and purpose are found by never giving up on the search. At the start and the finish, the program is anchored by the familiar strains of the Mamas and the Papas’ “California Dreamin’.” In between, lauded film composers James Horner and Michael Giacchino, electronic musician and Cinematic Orchestra leader Jason Swinscoe, and Norwegian DJ Todd Terje contribute melodies and moods. The underlying message: Your time is now. Your place is out there, beyond the expect- ed. Stop waiting for what’s next. Keep moving, not with your body but with your soul. Where you start never dictates where you end. And no matter who you are or where you’re headed, you can find the Golden State of Mind. PHANTOM REGIMENT IP H A N TA S M Set amid a musical landscape of sweeping symphonic scores and dark textures, Phantasm explores the stark contrasts between the real and the unreal. A twisted musical and visual chal- lenger emerges as an intruder from within the tradition of the Phantom Regiment. This seductive, powerful character begins life solely as a figment of the imagination but quickly becomes something more, blurring the lines between beauty, mad- ness, and desire. Forced to confront the enemy within, the corps uses newfound strength that leads to an awakening, and phantasy gives way to reality. Staying true to its classical-music identity, the Phantom Regiment has chosen selections from Sibelius, Shostakovich, Jarre, Rachmaninoff, and Khachaturian for this program. PIONEER IR ISH ON BROADWAY I Although the glittering shamrocks on Pioneer’s traditional U.S. Marine Corps- styled white caps clearly reflect that they are “the Irish corps,” there’s little else in their 2017 program that summons up images of the Emerald Isle. Instead, Irish on Broadway transports us to the City of Light via the Great White Way, telling the story of Jean Valjean from the Tony Award- winning musical Les Misérables, based on the classic Victor Hugo novel of the same name. Pioneer offers five snapshots from that celebrated show. Act one depicts the mood of the poor in post-Revolution France, while act two samples the after- hours gaiety in a neighborhood bar. Act three features DCI’s 2015 and 2016 Vocal Champion, Jackie Hirn. In the fourth act, the powerful dynamics of Pioneer’s per- cussion demonstrates the turmoil at the barricades, and the fifth and final act pro- vides a joyful ending—with a return appearance by Hirn. SPIRIT OF ATLANTA CROSSROADS: WE ARE IH E R E ! This year, we find Spirit of Atlanta at a Crossroads, a point where a crucial decision must be made that will have far-reaching consequences—a choice of both physical and philosophical direc- tion. The center of a crossroads is a place of absolute potential suspended upon a vortex of power. How will that power be used? According to Spirit of Atlanta, the key to answering this question is accep- tance. The corps will apply its brass-heavy sound to a variety of material: Canadian singer/songwriter Gino Vannelli’s “Where Am I Going,” the first movement of American composer John Mackey’s Wine- Dark Sea, “Eric’s Song” by Taiwanese- American pop-folk artist Vienna Teng, “Liquid Dance” from Indian composer A.R. TROOPERS D U E L S A N D D U E T S I All of us at one time or another have experi- enced the push and pull of close relation- ships, the duality that comes from being connected to someone you can’t escape. To love or to fight? To create harmony or wrestle with the consequences? It’s a classic choice, and it’s the theme of Duels and Duets. From the duel sequence in Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet and the tango hidden in Puccini’s “Nessun Dorma” to the work of world-renowned composer Robert W. Smith and Emmy- winning sound designer John Davidson, Troopers let old and new battle it out musi- cally. A modern take on fencing creates a visual backdrop for oneupmanship, mak- ing sure every strike is on target.
