The next year, she and the Blue Devils experienced their first DCI win. It was repeated in '77, '79, and '80. Though Lee admits it's really a thrill any time you win DCI, she claims 1980 was her biggest thrill, because the corps felt more \"anticipation\" than in the past, and perhaps also a little more pressure. \"There's always pressure on every- one in the corps, because of our reputation. The Eastern Carps North Star What does the Berkley School of Music, one of the finest music schools in the United States, do during the summer? Well, a chunk of it joins the North Star Drum and Bugle Corps, from the North Shore of Boston, Massachusetts. Several percussion line members, some horns, a few instructors, and the drum major are either attending Berkeley or have graduated. They see the North Star as a great experience for music students. Scott Hiser and Frank Coughlin are both members of the percussion section, known as the \"chrome wall.\" \"I marched before I went to Berkley,\" says Scott. \"I like the oppor- tunity to travel. Besides, drum corps is a different aspect of playing that you get nowhere else.\" Frank agrees, and sees it as another opportunity to improve his musical abilities. \"Both school and drum corps allow you to grow individually.\" Their goals are completely opposite, though. Scott is studying to teach music. He's working with a marching band and wants to continue that. But he says he'd also like the chance to play in a pit orchestra or jazz band. Frank, who is studying the tympani, wants to join an orchestra. Drum corps really has very little to do with either of those endeavors. The Midwestern Carps cavaliers It was January. The Cavaliers were holding a weekend camp just after the New Year. The school building was cold, but the souls of more than 150 people there were warm. Already, Drum Major Dave Flynn was looking forward to the summer of '81. \"It's going to be tough,\" he predicted. \"Competition will be stiff.\" But then, competition has always been stiff in DCI. Nevertheless, the Cavaliers always manage to be right in the middle of it. The Cavaliers of Park Ridge, Illinois, have evolved into an exciting and emotional marching unit. Their music is loud when it has to be, soft when the mood calls for it. Their drill lifts people from their seats almost automatically. Flynn is proud of that. \"We would have liked to have placed higher than ninth at the DCI World Championship in Birmingham,\" Flynn says. \"But when the crowd responds as it did, how can you really lose?\" Flynn has been in the corps for six years. This will be his first year as drum major, and his last marching with the corps. \"I was initiated into the Cavies with - and by - a lot of old-time members,\" he says. The Midwestern Carps Blue Stars There are a great many traditions that one just takes/or granted; it's rather comforting to know that some things remain stable. But in 1980, a traditional pattern was broken, and it was anything but comforting/or the Blue Stars of LaCrosse, Wisconsin. For the first time in DCl's history, the Blue Stars didn 't qualify for finals. Despite a well-rounded, solid show and a new look imparted by un/forms that arrivedjust before Birmingham, the Blue Stars just didn't quite have what it took in prelims, and were narrowly edged out of the top twelve. However.fans who don '1 like their traditions tampered with can rest assured that the Blue Stars don't care for it, either.
