DCI's 25th Anniversary was in ful1 swing at Orlando's Citrus Bowl Stadium on Tuesdarnigh , r\\11gust with the Division II/III Finals com etition. Of the forty-five Division II & III corps, 12 corps advanced from prelims; five from Division II and seven from Division III. The quest for a finalist spot was especially intense in Division III. While St. John's made the cut, Golden Lancers just missed a finalist position by two-tenths of a point, Delta Brigade by three-tenths and Lone Star by four-tenths. When it was all over, Mandarins won their fifth Division III title after moving up from second place in Prelims and the Spartans retained their first place lead taking the Division II World Championship title. The five highest scoring corps from the Division II/III Finals, regardless of Division, then advanced to Thursday's Division I Quarter-finals. Some 25 years later, it seemed almost unreal that DCI's 25th Anniversary was upon us in 1997. After weeks of intense competitions along the SUMMER MUSIC GAMES Tour, celebrations of Drum Corps International's 25th Anniversary highlighted the week-long Championships event in Orlando, Florida. But it was competition that brought a dramatic end to the 1997 season. Who would be the 1997 Division I Champion? Blue Devils had to be considered a contender, but so were Cadets of Bergen County. And as they met throughout the season, they traded places by tenths and occasionally tied. And who really expected Santa Clara Vanguard to be the threat they turned out to be? Starting the season 9.5 points behind the Concord crew, they steadily closed the gap and tied for frrst place in quarter-fmals. In the end, the Blue Devils would capture their ninth DCI World Championship Title bringing to a close what many had expressed as an incredible experience. The idea for the DCI OnStage July 18 • Denver, Colorado Pe ormance Series developed through July 26 • San Antonio, Texas the shared belief by many regarding the uniqueness of the drum corps activity. August 1 • Ypsilanti, Mi iga Prompted by the Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps and their interest to August 12 • Orlando, Florida showcase the talents of their members, the DCI OnStage Performance Series encompasses the power of the brass section in standstills, the versatility of the guard in the indoor activity, and the impact of the percussion section, both moving and stationary. This series is an opportunity to showcase these abilities through individuals and sections, as well as the entire performance ensemble. By offering a variety of performances for our audiences without diverting from the traditional drum corps environment, DCI OnStage Performance Series allows the individual drum and bugle corps to showcase their talents while creating more intimate performances for drum corps audiences and members. These opportunities enhance the visibility of our activity while providing our audience with a different perspective and appreciation of the precision and emotion of these talented performers in a theatrical environment.
