10 THINGSTO KNOWBEFOREGETTINGON THEWATER1. BE PREPARED:  Have at least one U.S.Coast Guard-approved or UL-listed personal flotationdevice (PFD) for each person on board and make sureeach life jacket is appropriate for each passengersheight and weight. Life jacket requirements andinformation can be found at www.uscgboating.org. 2. NO SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED: Rememberthat inflatable swimming aids, such as toys, rafts, water wings, ski jackets orbelts and other devices, can easily puncture and deflate and are not approvedby the U.S. Coast Guard or certified by UL as a life safety device. Theseitems are essentially toys and should not be used as a substitute for a PFD.3. DO NOT OVERLOAD THE BOAT: Capsizing andfalls overboard are the most common causes of fatal accidents and account formore than half of all boating fatalities. Pay attention to the capacity label onthe boat and be careful not to overload small boats with passengers and gear.4. INSPECT A BOAT LIKE A HOME:  Ensurethat the hand pump on the fuel tank is sturdy and contains no cracks.Inspect the bilge pump to ensure all fuel buildup has been cleared andno cracks have developed. For boats with inboard motors fuel supplies, ensure the bilge blower runs for a full minute prior to engine start.24 NAUTICAL VENTURES MAGAZINE

5. SAFETY EQUIPMENT: In addition 25to PFDs, ensure that all the necessary safety equipmentis aboard. A VHF radio with the ability to monitorthe emergency frequency, channel 16, is a necessity.Do not rely on cell phones for adequate coverage.Cell service at sea is sporadic and unreliable. Makecertain the flare kit is serviceable and that the flaresare not expired. A sound producing device is also re-quired. A bell, horn or whistle will fill the bill. Awell-stocked first aid kit will help get through theminor injuries until medical attention is available.6. TAKE A SAFETY COURSE: Approximately 90 percent of all reported fatalitiesoccurred on boats where the operator had not receivedboating safety instruction. For those that own or plan onoperating a boat, contact the local office of the U.S. CoastGuard to learn more about taking a boating safety course.7. REMEMBER THE CHARTS: Donot rely solely on electronics for navigation and tripplanning. If the electronics fail, charts are a back up.Keep a log for travel. Mark positions on the chart everytwenty or thirty minutes. This will help if fog rolls in.8. FILE A FLOAT PLAN WITHTHE COAST GUARD:  Filing a floatplan will enable emergency services to narrowtheir search should you become lost or overdue.Additionally, ensure family or friends knowwhen you will depart and when you should bereturning, along with your scheduled ports of call.9. CHECK THE WEATHER: There aremany weather resources available to mariners. Alwayscheck the weather forecast along the route beforedeparture. Never depart with impending bad weather.10. DRINK RESPONSIBLY: Alcoholwas listed as the leading contributing factor in fatalboating accidents in 2008. Sun and dehydration canheighten the effects of alcohol, so be aware and drinkresponsibly. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. NAUTICAL VENTURES MAGAZINE

QPS MARINE SHIPS handles the buying and selling of existing vessels in the sec- ondary market or new ships (called new builds in industry parlance). Our brokers discuss opportunities and market trends with ship owners, charterers, investors and bankers, report on market sales, vessel values, market trends and activity. When a shipowner has a vessel to sell or is looking for a vessel to acquire, our ship brokers will source the market for suitable tonnage, discuss with the counter party or their broker the main points of a transaction and they eventually negotiate all the de- t ails. During the negotiations, the ship brokers do not only negotiate the price of the vessel on behalf of the principals but also all the logistical details for the transfer of the title and the vessel herself to the buyers. During the negotiations, minor disputes may have to be handled given that the market may be moving in favor of the buyer (vessel price is softening) or in favor of the seller (vessel price is strengthening) giving each party a reason to cancel the transaction. When ship brokers act on behalf of passive investors or financial buyers, they may also have to advise and source employment for the vessels, a vessel manager and oversee such agreements. At QPS Marine Ships you will find qualified brokers to help you through all this pro- cess until you get 100% satisfied with your purchase.26 NAUTICAL VENTURES MAGAZINE

TALKING ABOUT... MirageDrive with Glide Technology The ungainly paddle is replaced by the sheer efficiency of the MirageDrive ped- al. With the largest human muscle group now in play, kayaking becomes easier than ever. How deep does the water need to be to use the MirageDrive? The required depth varies a bit from model to model, but, on average, the water only needs to be about 18\" (0.45m) deep when using standard fins. A shorter stroke can be used in stretches of shallower water. How much maintenance does the MirageDrive require? Not much. We recommend a quick rinse with fresh water when you're done for the day and an occasional spray with silicone lu- bricant. Is the MirageDrive removeable? Yes. The Click and Go mounting system allows you to quickly re- move the MirageDrive for clean- ing or storage.34 NAUTICAL VENTURES MAGAZINE

NAUTICAL VENTURES MAGAZINE KAYAK FISHINTIPSG Why is kayak fishing such a big deal? It is exciting, inexpensive, simple, and healthy sport where you set your own pace and also catch great fish. It is considered a frontier sport since it is still in the early developmental stages. Where to Kayak fish? Kay- aks are very versatile; there is no limit of places to fish. Your choices will depend on paddling distance, time frame, and ability. Kayaking is great exercise and age is rarely a barrier to the sport. Fishing smarter will catch more fish than fishing harder and pad- dling farther. Good planning can make up for lack of paddling ability or time available. Use a map like Google Earth when planning to fish areas that you do not know well. Choose a circu- lar route that will give you more fishing opportunities. Kayak Fish Handling - Once you have whipped a fish you intend to keep, you will need to store it somewhere. Smaller fish can be stored in a cooler with ice; you might consider a fish bag with ice for a medium fish that will not fit in a cooler. Wrap large fish in towels or netting and strap it to the deck of your kayak. It is a good idea to carry a burlap bag to keep the fish wet and to control fish slime. Nautical Ventures associates can provide insight into kayak selec- tion and paddling techniques. 35

NEW adventure island THE HOBIE MIRAGE ADVENTURE ISLAND, a Trimaran “Sail/Yak” that incorporates the pat- ented Hobie MirageDrive into a unique sailing machine is unlike any other sailing craft on the water. Detach the crossbars, akas and amas and you have an adventure-touring kayak; reattach it all, step the rig and you have a nimble trimaran. A roller-furling, vertically battened mainsail provides lift, a daggerboard prevents lateral slip, and the amas tuck parallel against the roto- molded polyethylene hull for docking. The new Vantage CT seats have three height options and the ability to recline the seat back. Multiple hatches and on-deck stowage encourage multi-day adventures, and the MirageDrive offers paddle-free locomotion when kayaking or when the wind scatters, making it easy to get home. The Hobie Adventure Island also makes for a great fishing platform. Pre-order only, available April 2015 at NAUTICAL VENTURES.36 NAUTICAL VENTURES MAGAZINE

Instantly, the eye is drawn to the flared foredeck bal-anced over the sharp, strong entry of the bow. The eye is swept back along her glistening teak toerails that accent a sloping sheer. Back farther still, it passes the beautifully curved engine vents, and finally to the transom where the graceful slope of tumble-home blends teak covering boardsonto deck. Onboard, the rich simplicity of every detail like the polished stainless steel wheel andcontrol handles compliments the elegantly rounded corners of the teak control pod and instrumentpanel. Inside the Davis is a perfect reflection of one’s individual taste and style. The Davis designteam knows how to make a statement that is at once elegant yet bold, simple yet extraordinary. Andwhat truly makes each Davis a work of art is its striking appearance has a direct relationship toits superior performance.
