It was Teagan’s birthday. She got a music box from Gran, and a unicorn T-shirt from her big sister, Bea. 4

But Teagan’s best birthday present was… 5

6

… a net! It sounds odd, but it’s true. The net was from Mom. It was for keeping caterpillars in. 7

Teagan and Bea looked for caterpillars in the garden. 8

“It’s the right season,” said Mom. “Look on each leaf.” 9

Teagan found ten caterpillars on the first leaf she looked at. 10

Bea found six caterpillars. “That’s fantastic, girls!” said Mom. 11

They found lots of green stuff for the caterpillars to lie on and eat. 12

Teagan took the caterpillars in. 13

Mom helped Teagan set up the net. Teagan put a sheet on the ground. 14

Mom put all the green stuff in a jar. “This is caterpillar fuel!” she said. 15

“Caterpillars like the damp,” said Mom. Teagan sprayed the air. 16

They put in some sticks, too. 17

Teagan waited three weeks. The caterpillars had eaten a lot! 18

They turned into cocoons, hanging on the sticks. 19

The next Tuesday, Teagan looked in the net. “Mom! Bea!” she shouted. “Butterflies!” 20

It was true. The net was full of peacock butterflies. They were bright red, black, and blue. 21

Teagan took the net out in the garden. Out fluttered a cloud of butterflies. 22

Teagan felt proud as her birthday butterflies drifted away. 23
