His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan
His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Honourable President of the UAE

MESSAGE OF THE CHAIRMAN Dear reader, Greetings to you!!! Oasis International School under Ahalia Group, is one of the leading and most sought-after schools in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. I am extremely delighted to pen down my thoughts and address my students, teachers and parent community through the school magazine NEST. Oasis is a world that lies beyond the classrooms. We strive to impart knowledge that encompasses quality education. To contribute a well-rounded personality to the society is an endeavour undertaken and promised by the school. And we have succeeded to shape the children to meet and greet the world. Our aim is to provide the right environment to the young minds to fly to the endless vista of information and opportunities. Let our children step up and become leaders. We believe in empowering our children so as to help them become the best everywhere.
I truly believe that a magazine is the reflection of a school and NEST, Where Ideas Hatch is a product of the collective efforts. It brings up exhilarating pieces of art and literature. This magazine unleashes a wide spectrum of creative skills ranging from writing to editing and even designing the magazine. I congratulate the entire team for their hard work and dedication that has resulted in the publication of the school magazine. The Ahalia Group has been able to create a reasonable balance between quality and quantity. The wheel of excellence along with continual progress has been steered with values and conventions. Quality education, constant improvement in infrastructure, educational technology, teaching and learning process- all these set the wheel on its track. The school assures global, innovative and committed citizens through all- encompassing learning. Dr. VS Gopal Chairman Ahalia Group of Institutions
MESSAGE OF THE PRINCIPAL I am very delighted to share the news that we are publishing a school magazine to showcase the talents of our students in writing. As you know the reading and writing ability is more crucial today than ever before. Children who read tend to do better at school and professionally. The rise in technology means increased demands for higher literacy. Developing writing skills can help everyone strengthen his ability to make reasoned arguments on a variety of subjects, which is useful in school and on the job. May God Almighty bless us all. CKA Manaf Principal
MESSAGE OF THE ACADEMIC COORDINATOR \"Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful; whatever you do, do your best.\" Abraham Lincoln. The goal of education is to help people use their minds better, to think about what's true in the world and what's not true, what should be accepted, what should be rejected, and above all how to keep the right attitude towards life. The school magazines motivate the students to be more creative, to think out of the box and come up with new ideas, with new practices. To think out of the box, there should be a box. This box is the discipline on which platform we can stand and put things together, understand the facts, communicate clearly. We live at a time, when we are deluged with information of all sorts much of which is of low quality, so the capacity to synthesise this information is important. Therefore, a disciplined mind is the greatest asset a developed human being should have. From such a mind great thoughts generate which can bring better changes to the society. We are living in an accelerating world of change in every area of life. Such changes call for new ways of learning and thinking if we are to thrive in the world during the eras to come.
The future of our planet demands such 'new minds' able to explore creative alternatives for problems that cannot be anticipated. I make use of this opportunity to remind my students that they should not be problems, instead they should be solutions. We strive to develop the three key attributes of a student –centric, value- based education at OIS, namely- Every Student, an engaged learner Every Teacher, a caring Educator Every Parent, a supportive partner Dear children, try to make your mind more disciplined, try to think differently and create a beautiful, peaceful and value- based world of your own. Love yourself, love what you are doing and be better citizens every moment you live. I appreciate all the writers, and wishing a pleasant experience to all readers, I remain. Many thanks, Smitha Vimal
MESSAGE OF THE VICE PRINCIPAL Curricular and co-curricular activities in school form the core of students’ education. They help build a solid character. Co-curricular activities are a great way to get a break from the four-walled environment and move outside the traditional classroom. They give students ample chances to showcase their non-academic skills. They explore what the students are good at and enable them to manage their time beneficially. Co- curricular activities inculcate noble values such as problem-solving skills, self-esteem and confidence. They also teach the students to work as a team. School magazines form an integral component of school life. They are the storehouse for tapping out the creative talents of students and laying the foundation for their later prosperity. Students are exposed to a wide variety of interactive content. It provides the student an opportunity for wholesome development. I am joyfully jovial to perceive the news that our school has taken a keen interest to publish a magazine soon. I express my ecstasy and congratulate the editors-in-charge for their earnest endeavours in this regard. Let the magazine be a big tree useful and fruitful for the children. Abdul Azeez Vice Principal
EDITORIAL A school magazine is to be viewed as a launch pad for students’ creative urges to bloom naturally. This humble effort, we believe, has successfully allowed them to create a world in words and colours. This task of editing the magazine would not have been possible without the sincere support of all- the Senior Leaders, parents, students and teachers. We are really thankful to our respected Principal for entrusting us with the responsibility of editing. We are also thankful to the Academic Coordinator for her continued support. We must thank the Vice Principal, Assistant Manager, Activity Coordinator, Supervisors, Heads of Departments, class teachers and others for taking painstaking effort in getting suitable entry from parents and students to the magazine. You all helped us immensely in breathing life into these pages. In this edition, we have tried to capture this academic year’s excitement and activities. We do hope that the magazine encourages many more students to use it as a platform to express their creativity. Humbly, we present \"NEST, Where Ideas Hatch\" to you. Editors-in-Charge Mr.Shanto Mr.Anish

Leader and Leadership - Article A Leader is not the one who gives order, but the one who leads the team from the front with courage. Leadership comes with honour and respect but as well with a huge load of responsibility. So being a leader is not easy and everyone is not capable of it. A leader needs to be hardworking and inspiring. He must have clear vision, which motivates team toward the task. He must be dedicated toward his team and work, thus setting a role model for the team. Although a leader may not make everyone happy, he must be caring and protective. His word and deed must reflect his love toward the team and work. A leader should be disciplined and honest. He must be trusted and believed by the team. A leader should possess specific skills for his work. And most importantly, a leader should have power to apologise and build up confidence in his team and remain cool. A leader is someone who can see how things can be improved, he should rally people toward that better vision. A leader can work toward making his vision a reality while putting people first. Just being able to motivate people isn't enough — a leader should be empathetic, and he should also strive to make his people successful. Leaders set the direction; they must also use management skills to guide their people to the right destination in a smooth and efficient way. Leaders help themselves and others to do the right things. They build an inspiring vision, and create something new. Leadership is about mapping out where you need to go to \"win\" as a team or organisation. A leader should be dynamic and inspiring. Leaders are people who do the right thing- Professor Warren G. Bennis guides thus: A leader 1.creates an inspiring vision of the future. 2. motivates and inspires people to engage with that vision. 3. manages delivery of the vision. 4. coaches and builds a team, so that it is more effective at achieving the vision. Like Mahatma Gandhi, how many of our leaders can honestly say, “My life is my message”? Abdurahim 11 b *************************************************************************** 2
An Exclusive Interview with the Principal An exclusive interview with the Principal, Mr. CKA Manaf by Roshan Pujari of Grade 10 A and Seth Andrews of Grade 9 A. 1. Good morning, sir! Can you provide some information about your job history and experience? Response: Good morning. I landed in the UAE on the 29th of December 1991 in a cold winter evening. There was an interview scheduled in 1990 at Hotel Adora, Bangalore to recruit teachers to the school. Mr AbdulAzeez, Mr Moidu and I were selected. We joined the school on the 4th of January, 1992. My first appointment was as a Cycle 1 teacher. There were classes up to Grade 8 in our school. Grades 1-3 were in a building near the Murabba Police Station and Grades 4-8 were in Matra in Jahili. The Principal of the school was Mr Muhammadali. Mr Ummar Koya was the Head Master who was in-charge of Cycle 1. At the time of the interview, I had been teaching English in a college in Kerala. Later, I was given Grade 8, the highest class of the school. I remember that the Principal had predicted a brighter future for me in Oasis. Before 2000, when Prof. KP Kamaluddeen served as the Principal, I became a Supervisor. In 2000, the school was shifted to a new building in Sarooj. The school had its first batch of grade 10 in 2003. There was a change of location from Sarooj to Mezyad in 2012. The school moved to the new building at a new location, that is, the present building at Al Jimi in 2019. 2. Have you been working here ever since you joined the school in 1992? Res: I left Oasis to become an English instructor in a college at Ras Became an English Al Khaima under University of Al Ghurair Dubai. It was a project to instructor under empower the natives of the UAE, especially, women. I came back to Oasis after 7 ½ months. The management compelled me to take University of Ghurair over as the Principal, and in 2007, I became the Principal of the Dubai school. In 2018-2019, the school achieved 100% result in CBSE Higher Secondary Examination. In 2019, Mrs Jaya Narayanan became the Principal and continued her service for a year. I was the Academic Director of the school during this time. I resumed my career in Oasis as its Principal when she left the school. 3
3. What is your greatest accomplishment? Res: I am sure, it’s my success in maintaining rapport with parents, students and teachers. I am not what I think I am; I am what others think about me. Think of the dilapidated school buildings at Mezyad with which we accomplished a big B rating. We maintained the same in the new building. Remember, our inspection was on the very next day we moved to this new building! Our hard, diligent and continuous work paid us. 4. Where do you see Oasis International School in five years? Res: In five years, Oasis will be the strongest in Al Ain in terms of the The strongest school number of students. Many other schools are full now, and they cannot in Al Ain, centre of accommodate more students as their buildings do not have space if a situation demands. The present strength of our school is 1300, and it academic excellence can contain 2400 students totally. It will be a centre of academic excellence. If the school can detain dedicated and experienced staff, it can continue its growth and materialise this target. 4. Please describe your leadership style. Res: I have never been a dictator in my life. Now, the power is decentralised, and I need to give directions and advice. Direct involvement is not necessary now, it’s supervising and monitoring. 5. How have you dealt with challenges, and what are some ways you have resolved them? Res: Some of the challenges were that we didn’t have teachers for music, art and dance. We have got teachers for art and music. Teachers were not paid satisfactorily before. The situation has changed now. Another area of concern is that many of our parents are uneducated who cannot do much in their children’s education. But this situation is changing quickly. The interesting thing is that many parents who studied in Oasis before prefer to send their children to Oasis. I’m pretty sure that those who know the quality of our teachers will not think about other schools. The school fee was very low before, now it has been unified. 6. How do you work under pressure? Res: I spend a lot of time in social and community work in the evening. Community service, This makes me happier, strengthens me to deal with work pressure. I reading, music used to read a lot of books, but that has decreased now as I am busy in the evenings too. Music has always been one of my favourite pastime activities. 7. Describe a time when a situation needed to be handled with sensitivity and tact. What was the issue, how did you handle it and what was the outcome? Res: The school didn’t have any facilities once. At the time of inspection and health visits, this was the greatest challenge. Almost all problems have been solved now. Those situations were handled only with diplomacy and tact. What else will work there other than diplomacy? 8. What has been one of your greatest contributions to the school? Res: One of the most significant contributions to the school is probably the best working environment the teachers have been provided with. I make it sure that it has to be so. 4
9. In what ways do you support and motivate teachers? Res: Motivation works differently in each individual’s case. Personally, I appreciate and support all. Awards and honours are given from time to time. Good words said in public also work well, I have experienced. I believe that teaching is 10. What is your approach to student discipline? the noblest profession in the world. It’s a Res: We faced a lot of discipline and behavioural issues before. But those prophetic job. This is a very positive change that we observed at the time of our shifting. Discipline is very necessary. Misbehaviour is the actual indiscipline. Certain discipline issues have to be diplomatically approached, looked into and solved. 11. What motivates you? Res: My commitment to Oasis itself is my best motivation. What I’m now is given by the school. I owe much to the school because the school gave me everything. I became a good teacher before and became a senior leader thanks to Oasis. This is my best thought about the school. So, I am grateful and indebted to the school. This motivates me further. My Experience as an Actor Dear friends, I am Bilal Dilwali Jan of Grade 11. When my former English teacher Mr.Shanto asked me to share my first experience in acting in a movie, I thought I should do it. I’ll tell you about 1. How I got introduced and started acting 2. My experience in this industry 3. Why I got selected 4. Pros and Cons of this industry How I got introduced and started acting Like any other actor, I had little experience with acting. I was introduced by my uncle, who is working in this industry. I didn’t get in to shoots just because my uncle works there, I got in after I was cast, auditioned and selected. I was selected for one more reason: I speak 4 languages. I was confident, fearless and I matched their finicky thoughts. How I got selected: One of the main reasons that I got selected for the cast is that I looked. similar to Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid. 7
This photo is from a scene where my co- Everything in this photo, the office table, worker played the role of Sheikh Rashid files, lamps and chair are the belongings as my father, and I played the role of of Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid. My experience in this industry Acting itself is a great industry to enroll in. Doing any shoot as an actor, you get a lot of attraction, attention and respect. To become an actor, one needs to be patient, should be able to accept rejection because you get 95%(NOs) most of the times unless you come to the right act. Invest your time, should work with mind connected. In the beginning, don’t ever show any sign of exhaustion. Be active on the set, be joyful as the directors and other co-workers will remember you all the time for this. Pros and cons of Film industry PROS • You get fame. • Good field for earning wealth in a short time. • Meeting brilliant models and actors. • You get to know more about the real world. CONS • At first, you would not be able to spend time with your family. • An actor would not have a specific time for sleep, which can end up in fatigue and depression later on. • Dangers are inevitable at many shoots, which might bring some injuries most of the time. The first episode, titled 'My First Horse', gives viewers an insight into Sheikh Mohammed's love for horses by narrating the story of his very first companion, Umm Halaj. Thank you dear friends, hope I could tell well about my debut appearance in a movie. I must pursue my studies first, get degrees before I become an actor. Bilal Dilwali Jan 11 A 8

A Mysterious Forest -story Students of Green Valley School Venezuela went on a field trip to Amazon Rain Forest on June 4. They set out very early in the morning and reached there before the sun rise. When they moved close to the forest, nothing was visible. The whole area was covered with snow.Soon, the golden rays of the sun appeared in the eastern horizon. As the sun started to rise, the snow began to fade. All the children were happy because they were going to see the Tropical Rain Forest for the first time in their life. They had only a bookish knowledge about the ‘Lungs of the Earth’. Their dream to visit the Tropical Rain Forest was becoming a reality. The teachers directed the children to enter the forest. When they entered the forest, they saw a horrible sight there. They couldn’t see any trees there. Instead, they saw huge monsters there! The small children started crying. The teachers consoled them hiding their own fear. Soon, the monsters started moving towards the children. There were hundreds of monsters who now circled them looking at them ferociously. Some of them were spitting fire. Some of them had red eyes like red hot fire balls and some of them had sharp claws. Suddenly they heard a thunderous voice. ‘’ Who are you?’’ ‘’What have you come for?’’ Obviously, it was the leader of the monsters. “We are students and teachers; we have come here to see the rain forest’’, the Head Master replied.“Have you brought any guns or axes with you?’’ The leader asked. “No, we have brought only note books and pens’’, said the Head 12 Master. The other monsters examined the visitors. They couldn’t find any weapons. “We hate human beings, we don’t want to see them”, the leader grunted. “But we like you, we wish to study about you”, the Head Master replied. “Have you brought any guns or axes with you?’’ The leader asked. “No, we have brought only note books and pens’’, said the Head Master. The other monsters examined the visitors. They couldn’t find any weapons. “We hate human beings, we don’t want to see them”, the leader grunted. “But we like you, we wish to study about you”, the Head Master solicited. The children were trembling with fear. The leader looked at them. Then it spoke:
Years ago, hundreds of humans swarmed here with axes and guns. They cut all the trees and hunted all the animals. As we were saplings, they didn’t cut us. A few fawns and cubs survived their attack. It was a terrible night; we wept bitterly and loudly. Hearing our cry, a wizard appeared. We told him what had happened. Its face reddened with anger. “Humans! Greedy creatures! I will teach them a lesson”, he growled. He blessed us. From then, we appear as monsters to humans. As they narrated their story, tears welled up in everyone’s eyes. After a while the monster leader beckoned the other monsters. What was the result- a beautiful forest appeared there! All the monsters were transformed into different trees and animals. The students and the teachers walked along the forest. Trees bent their branches and the children plucked fruits gleefully. Birds chanted ethereal songs for them. Streams gave them sweet water. They breathed fresh air, ate fruits, relished the fragrance of flowers. How beautiful the forest has been! They were very sad to leave the forest in the evening. By then, they had collected a lot of saplings. The forest gradually became monsters again, while they were leaving the forest. ***************************************************************************** It was the 5th of June, the ‘Environment Day’. The leader of the field trip presented the field trip report in the morning assembly. The assembly was quiet while the leader was reading the report. The members of Nature Club met and decided to plant the saplings to commemorate their strange experience. “Unusual! Who would believe it?” was their whisper. A Look into the Future – Year 2050 Article on Robotics Science by 4c Zameel Nabeel Ibrahim Ahmed Afrin Aseem Rameez Muzammil The world is advancing at unprecedented rates, and by 2050 we can expect to see life on Earth change drastically. If this is true, then what can we expect from the future? Now let's get into it. 1. Nanotechnology Scientists have already made great leaps in the world of nanotechnology and they remain unrelenting in making more of such progress. Nanotechnology has the potential to change everything from the way we behave to how we interact with each other. Many people in the industry firmly believe that there will come a time when nanobots will be fitted in our brains, allowing us to live within a larger, more connected virtual reality within our nervous system. This sounds farfetched, but many people believe it will be a reality sooner or later. 14
2.Transportation By 2050, transportation would have changed immensely. We're already seeing self-driving cars in the early phases of trial and error, so in three decades it's safe to say we should have the technology for true self driving vehicles. According to a Stanford University report, self-driving cars would not only reduce traffic related, deaths and injuries, but also bring about a change in lifestyle. When people don't have to drive anymore, they will have more free time for themselves and may choose to live in different places. As a result, companies like Tesla are already working to put out cars with such capabilities, and it won't be too long till we see them in full action. Another interesting technology that could change the way we travel is the Hyperloop One. The train has the potential to revolutionize transportation forever. When you hear the sound of the Hyperloop One, you hear the sounds of the future. For many scientists and world leaders, a major issue that clouds the world today is global warming. If people have any chance of attaining a greener and cleaner future, we need to switch practices by favoring more sustainable sources of energy. If we can manage to do that, we can expect to see a large difference in the future of our planet. 15
3. Energy The o cean could provide us with a solution. When it comes to renewable energy, the thermal energy hidden away in the ocean is immense and largely untapped at this point. Blue Rice is a company that is working on creating an energy breakthrough, one of the lakes that haven't been seen before. If their project pulls through, it will be able to outcompete fossil fuel based sources of energy. Blue rise is just one of the many ambitious companies trying to break out of the traditional means of energy production and can hopefully provide us with new solutions for the environmental problems that plague the world today. 4. Space Exploration One promis e that many people are still waiting on is one of space exploration. Companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin are making strides towards their respective goals of spatial exploration and colonization out of this world. We're not sure which goal will come to fruition first, but we can expect to have the capabilities to make space tourism a reality by 2050. People who can afford it will be able to spend up to a week in orbit. But be wary. According to many experts, spending a week in orbit won't come cheap, and it'll likely stay that way for a long time. 16
5. Artificial Intelligence AI is already mu ch more advanced than it was ten years ago, and it will only continue to witness rapid and exponential developments. Experts like John Mayeda believe that AI will have surpassed the processing power of all living brains on Earth in the near future. To properly function in that kind of society, it will be necessary to work together with these new systems to make sure that the preservation of important human values is carried forward. The rise of AI and change in culture will make technology an integral part of the workforce. In the coming years, everything will be connected and driven by data. Researchers also believe that the landscape of many industries as well as the job market, will radically change as a consequence. If we ought to go by the current trajectory of things, almost half of the world's current jobs won't even exist in 2050.Many of the physical labour jobs will be given out to the machines and robots, opening up new and safer job opportunities for the people. We can also expect to see people moving away from the traditional work systems, wanting more time to themselves, thus moving comfortably from the nine to five life-style. 3.Education Education is another industry that will see a drastic change in the next 30 years. According to experts, at least 90% of the student population will be pursuing online degrees by 2050. Unless the world devolves into an apocalypse, education will continue to be more globalized, and more solutions will come that allow more people to receive good education efficiently. The world has recently witnessed a huge move to online education, and it seems like more educational institutions have seen some of its benefits. Online education will likely continue to be the way of the future and will help people learn from any corner of the world. 17
According to an article from Commercial Micro manufacturing, robots will most likely take over many of the tasks you would expect your regular educators to handle. These robots will be capable of preparing courses, giving lectures, answering questions, setting and marking assignments, and providing feedback on time. Because robots don't require payment and can work tirelessly around the clock. They will serve as cost effective solutions for educational institutions. There's no doubt that the world will be quite different by 2050.We will see our existing systems and structures improve drastically, which will in turn change the way people function all around the world. The advancements of both AI and space travel will most likely be huge factors that help spark the radical change in the coming years. **************************************************************** Reading Maketh a Full Man Essay There is nothing more relaxing and soothing than reading a book Reading is the ability to use a language to skills. I Give My Best Always! 24 Poem I am a student I wish to share some ideas; They are not new. They are not flowery. They are not sweet. Nor are they bitter. I know well, Read and understand. Do it with a smile! Can’t you do it always? Though it is not As easy as I say. Your best If you always try your best, Then you'll never have to wonder About what you could have done If you'd harnessed all your thunder. And if your best Was not as good As you hoped it would be, You still could say \"I gave today All that I had in me\" This would quench Your ardent desire To excel in life That is given to you, For life is one Just one and not many. So, you would give Your best to it Wouldn’t you? Ay esha Mohammad 9 B ********************************* *******************************

The Gulf Region remained under the control of the British who based their policy on three unrealistic premises: The fight against the pirates, the fight against the slave trade and the fight against trade. In fact, these justifications were used by Britain as smokescreen for its colonial expansionist policies. December 1, 2022 Diary Thursday Dear Kiri Puja Shil 12 A I graduated yesterday. I'm leaving a lovely station behind as I take a train. The train was visible to me even a week before. I was aware of the train and its departure, but I never thought that it would arrive soon.Don't our lives have a lot of platforms and stations Kiri? I feel older than I did the week before. I’ve changed, and the world around me has changed. Life is an adventure, and you have to struggle to survive here. As one of my lecturers once said ‘’Life is not a fairy-tale. You will jump into boiling water from a hot pan once you graduate.’’ Kiri, I'm afraid. Like how I was on my first day of school. It seems like life is not at all like a fairy-tale. I long for my friends. We promised to keep in touch and keep our friendship alive. The memories I created with them are precious to my heart. We enjoyed ourselves and didn’t think about profit and loss. Let it be in our lives or in our ledger of accounting. I'm bidding farewell to the times when we could draw whatever we wanted on the wall, when we could greet with ‘’Goooooooood Morninggggg’’ to our teachers, when we used to giggle for no reason. All ancient benches, whiteboards, lunchboxes, playgrounds, patient eyes, timetable, punishment, warming hands, everything is flushing in front of my eyes.I miss my little self. I miss my friends, and their stupid smiles I miss that laid-back lifestyle, so I pondered, \"Can I simply be a kid again?\"I can't be a child again, and maybe wanting to be one is also improper. Life goes on. Like seasons, individuals will come and go from our lives. Seasons come and go, but I must remain still like the earth and the sky. And we'll also make it Kiri. In reality, nobody actually leaves our lives. People only shift roles; they never truly depart. Puja Shil ************************************************************************** 27

Road Safety - Essay Every day we read about dangerous and awful road accidents in the media. A lot of people have been killed or fatally wounded due to these accidents. Traffic laws protect us from harms, safeguard others and their property, too. Citizens must abide by these laws. Sometimes people are reckless; they turn out to jeopardise others’ lives. Such people are a threat to the peaceful existence and harmony of the society. To prevent any harm to our lives and resources, all the road safety rules must be obeyed to the core of them. There are road barriers, humps, road fences, etc. which must be respected for ourselves and others. Many facilities and equipment such as automatic brake system (ABS) have made roads safer these days in addition to stringent laws. Let’s be more sensible and responsible about the safety of all. 'Special educational needs' is a legal definition and it refers to children with learning problems or disabilities that make it harder for them to learn than most children of the same age. A special educational needs (SEN) teacher will work with children and young people who need extra support, or require an advanced programme of learning, in order to reach their full educational potential. How schools can help children with special educational needs A school can usually provide help and sometimes use specialists. If your child has special educational needs, he may need extra help with school work, reading, writing, number work or understanding information, expressing himself or understanding what others are saying.Such children might have sensory or physical needs that affect them in school. What is the Role of a SENCo? (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) A SENCo is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the school's SEN policy. All mainstream schools must appoint a teacher to be their SENCo. The SENCo will coordinate additional support for pupils with 28
special educational needs and liaise with their parents, teachers and other professionals who are involved with them. The role of the SENCo is crucial for early years settings in supporting early identification and intervention for children with special educational needs and will be a useful contact for parents who have any concerns about their child’s development. The type of responsibilities of a SENCo: · Overseeing the day-to-day operation of the school’s SEN policy. · Supporting the identification of children with special educational needs. · Coordinating provision for children with special educational needs. · Liaising with parents of children with special educational needs. · Liaising with other providers, educational psychologists and external agencies particularly for children receiving support. · Ensuring that the school keeps the records of all pupils with special educational needs up to date. When to Consult a SENCo If you think that there is something holding your child back, express those concerns. If your child has not been diagnosed as having a special need, but you think things are not progressing as they should, have a meeting with the SENCo. If the needs are likely to be more than a minor concern that can be dealt with by the class teacher, the SENCo may observe the child, talk to other staff members and look at any records that may indicate a difficulty. This may suggest that the child just needs a little extra help, or that SEN professionals need to become involved to diagnose a graver difficulty, and perhaps initiate an Education, Health and Social Care (EHC) Plan. The SENCo will then be the person who liaises with you, the teachers and teaching assistants about your child's needs. This isn't a one-way street - ensuring your child receives the full help necessary to fulfil his or her potential may require diligent homework, detailed searching and questions on your part.
