Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars) has twice been crowned WA Horse of theYear and a hat-trick of titles beckons when he returns for an autumn campaign in the G1 Futurity Stakes. “He’s a great horse and a pleasure to train. I thoughtTosen Stardom was going to win the Futurity, but he keeps on building. You wouldn’t want him chasing you.” Darren Weir SHEIDEL - February 25 Sheidel won four stakes races in Perth for owner-breeder Des de Largie and was subsequently sold to Victorian breeder Rob Crabtree. She repaid that price-tag in the Oakleigh Plate (1100m). “We were really confident,” trainer David Hayes said after Caulfield’s premier sprint. “I think Perth form is very underrated and Sheidel was just spot on.” Showing blistering speed, Sheidel was sent straight to the front by Joao Moreira and ran a top-class Oakleigh Plate field into the ground. It was her first start since finishing second toTakedown in the 2016 Winterbottom Stakes. “She jumped out so quickly and travelled on the bridle straight away,” Moreira said. “She just didn’t give up and kept attacking the line. She quite small but has got such a big heart.” SILENT SEDITION - March 24 Andrew Noblet’s class mare Silent Sedition scored a well-deserved victory in the G1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley. She was coming off an excellent second, following a wide trip, in the G1 Coolmore Classic at Rosehill. Settled behind the leaders but three-wide from an outside barrier, she hit the front passing the 100m and then fought back gamely to defeat Hellbent. It was also a milestone for jockey Katelyn Mallyon who became the first female jockey to ride a Group 1 winner at Moonee Valley. Silent Sedition improved her record to 6 wins in 16 starts without ever finishing out of the first-four. The War Chant (USA) mare didn’t fire during the spring carnival but Noblet expects her to resume in winning form for the autumn carnivals. “Coming back from a mile, coming back from Sydney and to do that was just unbelievable. She’s just a real talent this mare.” Andrew Noblet VEGA MAGIC – May 17 & September 2 Following Group 3 wins in the Colonel Reeves and Scahill Stakes at Ascot, Vega Magic transferred to Lindsay Park where he became the latest WA galloper to go to another level in the Eastern States. He won the G1 Goodwood in Adelaide and LR Regal Roller Stakes at Caulfield before defeating 9 Group 1 winners- led by Black Heart Bart - in the G1 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield. A trip to Sydney followed where he finished a creditable second to Redzel in the $10m million Everest at Randwick. Vega Magic was bred by Ascot-based brothers Wally and George Daly. “He’s our first Group 1 winner as breeders,” Wally said . “He’s rapidly becoming the ‘people’s horse’ in Melbourne but will always be a WA-bred!” “I was worried before the Memsie because no horses were leading and winning. But it would have taken a mighty horse to get to him. He’s got special qualities.” David Hayes14 SUNSPEED SUMMER 2018

WA Milestones in Melbourne BOOM TIME – October 21 Lindsay Park was represented by four entrants in the G1 Caul- field Cup and its outsider BoomTime produced a sustained kick in the closing stages to score by over a length at odds of $51. BoomTime won a LR Melvista Stakes at Ascot and, after a year on the sidelines recovering from a tendon injury, claimed the LR Mornington Cup Prelude (2000m) and was also a good fourth in the Herbert Power Stakes prior to the Caulfield Cup. Born and raised at Ferrari Racing & Breeding, he was initially raced by Serpentine breeder Kim Loxton but was sold to Lind-say Park after being tailed off 30 lengths in the 2017 Sydney Cup.“We thought he would beat more than would beat him but I reckoned the stablemates had a bit more. “You don’tget many opportunities as an owner. It wasn’t going to be a full field and we thought, let’s have a go.” David Hayes SUNSPEED STRIKES - 2017 The Sunspeed breed struck in several other interstate stakes races during 2017 beginning with He Or She at Flemington on March 4. We use it all the waythrough yearling prep as well, andadd some Equijewel for the prep.I cut some paddocks for hay, thathave been purposely reseeded. That covers us for rolls during thesummer. I buy all my oaten hayand lucerne hay in for chaffcutting - It works out well and Ihave a good supplier. SUNSPEED SUMMER 2018 47
