Techniques to save biodiversity include the situ conservation, where protected areas offer the best hope of saving a representative sample of the world’s biodiversity. The Aspromonte National Park , in Reggio Calabria territory, has a great regional biodiversity and is a furthermore a geopark, recognized as UNESCO site, with a rich geological, natural and cultural heritage

The Park territory, deeply marked by a number of FIUMARA LA VERDE watercourses, is also characterized by wide forests of beech tree, silver fir, black pine, holm oak, chestnut tree, and Mediterranean maquis

Climate changes: NATURAL DISASTER Storms and winds of up to 200 km / h have brought a disaster in the Dolomites. 50,000 hectares of Forests in Veneto, Trentino and Friuli Venezia Giulia were destroyed in one night. There were several landslides. About 14 million pine and spruce trees were razed to the ground. The Comelico dam near the Austrian border covered with trees that fell into the river Piave, trees that for centuries have provided timber used as building materials., With the sparse of entire forests on the ground, biodiversity has disappeared, local climate changes, the hydrogeological regime is affected and landslides and avalanches can be facilitated.

FIRES AND FOREST DAMAGE One of the most destructive cases for forests, woods and plants is that of fires that burn and destroy millions of trees and plants every year.

Our future: green cities Bring the forest in our cities

Vertical Forest Towers The Vertical Forest is a complex of two residential tower blocks, located in the Milan business center, on the edge of the Isola district. A peculiarity of these buildings is the presence of more than two thousand tree species, including shrubs and tall trees, distributed on the façades. This is an ambitious metropolitan reforestation project which, through the vertical densification of greenery, aims to increase the plant and animal biodiversity of Milan The vegetal system of the Vertical Forest contributes to the construction of a microclimate, produces humidity, absorbs CO2 and dust particles and produces oxygen.

The over 100 plant species of the Vertical Forest were installed and positioned depending on their orientation, and on how they look in the different seasons of the year

What is the environment? ❏ It is the place where we live, the place that hosts people, animals and plants. But the environment is also the air, the water, the ground, the light. Finally, the environment is everything we have around us, everything that surrounds us in nature.

What is pollution? What about environmental pollution? Pollution is damage or a series of damages to which one or more environments are subjected. Generally we know eight types: ⮚ Air pollution ⮚ Water pollution ⮚ Soil pollution ⮚ Noise pollution ⮚ Radioactive pollution ⮚ Thermal pollution ⮚ Light pollution ⮚ Electromagnetic pollution

1. A I R P O L L U T I O N Sources of Air Pollution Pollution enters the Earth's atmosphere in many different ways. Most air pollution is created by people. These man-made sources of pollution are called anthropogenic sources. Some types of air pollution, such as smoke from wildfires or ash from volcanoes, occur naturally. These are called natural sources. photos by : national geographic

Effects On Humans People experience a wide range of health effects from being exposed to air pollution. Effects can be broken down into short-term effects and long-term effects. Short-term effects, which are temporary, include illnesses such as pneumonia or bronchitis. They also include discomfort such as irritation to the nose, throat, eyes, or skin. Long-term effects of air pollution can last for years or for an entire lifetime. They can even lead to a person's death. Long- term health effects from air pollution include heart disease, lung cancer, and respiratory diseases. photo by : Tomas Pradas. Greenhouse Effect & Global Warming Global warming is an environmental phenomenon caused by natural and anthropogenic air pollution. It refers to rising air and ocean temperatures around the world. This temperature rise is at least partially caused by an increase in the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases trap heat energy in the Earths atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that has the biggest effect on global warming.

● Air pollution may cause diseases, allergies and even death to humans; it may also cause harm to other living organisms such as animals and food crops, and may damage the natural environment (for example, climate change, ozone depletion or habitat degradation) or built environment (for example, acid rain). Both human activity and natural processes can generate air pollution. en.m.wikipedia.org 2016 air quality indicator - light colors have lower air quality and thus higher air pollution.

The main causes of air pollution in Turkey: 1) residential heating 2) industry 3) road traffic 4) thermal power plant

Causes of air pollution in Italy: • production processes (industrial and artisanal activities) • combustion processes (heating and vehicular traffic). The main source of pollution is motor vehicle traffic, especially in the large cities.

Remedies .Drive less: ➔ Carpooling ➔ Walking, cycling ➔ Use public transport Drive better: ➔ Accelerate gradually ➔ Respect the speed limits ➔ Use the car only if essential ➔ Periodic car checks (blue sticker) ➔ to buy electric or hybrid cars

2) Water pollution ● Water pollution is an alteration of ecosystems that have water as a fundamental component. It is caused by numerous and different factors, such as the direct or indirect discharges of industrial activities or normal human activities (such as domestic sewage) that arrive in rivers, lakes and seas from large urban centers without appropriate treatment. Water pollution can also derive from accidental causes, such as oil tanker accidents.

The Mediterranean Sea ● 5.9 million years ago, due to continental drift, it was separated from the Atlantic Ocean and became a huge lake. The water evaporated and a large amount of salt settled on the bottom. After new tectonic movements, the Strait of Gibraltar opened and the water ebbed, covering the layer of salt (THIS IS WHY THE MEDITERRANEAN IS VERY SALTY). ● The climate: thanks to the thermo-regulating action of the sea and the mountains that shelter the coasts from the cold north winds, the Mediterranean climate is a climate with mild winters and hot, dry summers.

The edge of the sea is a beautiful place, respect it!

Plastic is a problem The photo shows a fish trapped in a plastic glove (Mediterranean Sea)

The Strait of Messina ● The Strait of Messina is increasingly suffocated by pollution, so much so that plastic waste and washing machines have been found up to 500 meters deep. The researchers in fact made use of an ROV, a mechanical robot suitable for plumbing the sea depths, detecting an extremely worrying condition. On the seabed of the Strait of Messina there is really everything, with pollution levels among the highest ever recorded in the world.

UP AND DOWN: NATURE VS MAN This photo represents two aspects of the same place: a beautiful sunset on the Strait and the rubbish under the same Strait.

Drinking water ● Of all the water on Earth only 3% is sweet (drinkable) but it is this small part that is needed by most of the living beings who live on land, including us, unfortunately, as this photo shows, we often forget it and we pollute.

URBAN ACTIVITIES • USE LITTLE DETERGENT TO WASH DISHES, CLOTHES AND THE HOUSE; • USE LITTLE SHAMPOO WHILE SHOWERING; • USE NATURAL CLEANING PRODUCTS; • DO NOT SPILL OIL IN THE WASTE WASTE. • BUY PRODUCTS WITH ECO- FRIENDLY LABELS, WHICH POLLUT LESS

IN AGRICULTURAL ACTIVITIES: • USE A FEW CHEMICAL SUBSTANCES TO GROW THE PLANTS WELL AND TO KILL HARMFUL INSECTS.

IN INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITIES: • FACTORIES MUST HAVE A PURIFIER THAT CLEANS THE WATER BEFORE THROWING IT IN THE RIVERS AND THE SEA. the photo represents the deputy of Trapani

3) Soil pollution DEFINITION: the soil is the most superficial part of the earth's crust, where the roots of plants sink and where animals, algae, fungi and bacteria live.

● Sources of soil pollution are industrial waste, urban waste and chemicals. To this can be added solid waste, urban and industrial, often accumulated in open landfills. A polluted soil is no longer suitable for cultivation because poisons contained in it, in addition to reducing their fertility, can pass into agricultural products, making them harmful to the health of humans and animals.

HOW TO SAVE THE SOIL Soil must and can be saved from destruction and pollution in various ways: ● reforest the mountainous and hilly areas ● restore the banks and beds of watercourses to their natural state ● reduce industrial and urban discharges ● decrease the use of chemicals in agriculture ● reduce the mass of urban and industrial solid waste through the recovery of all recyclable ● materials create landfills in accordance with the law

RECYCLING.. Green Steps BuIldıng Our Future..

What is recycling? Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into new materials and objects. We can recycle paper, plastic, metal, glass and we can make new new objects.

Benefits of Recycling ● It protects the ecosystem and the wildlife. ● With recycling, we can reduce the amount of trash in the environment. ● It saves energy and money. ● It creates new jobs about recycling. ● It can reduce the greenhouse gas emissions.

Waste Types ● Wood waste ● Plastic waste ● Metal waste ● Paper waste ● Glass waste ● Composite waste ● Vegetable waste oil ● Organic waste ● Electronic waste ● Waste battery

Recycling and Art Recycling is used in most fields as well as for art. Many nice and wonderful works of art can be produced using things that are recyclable.
