One of the ways you can make the greatest change in a person’s life is to help them learn to read. Literacy opens up the world to us. It makes us better informed about life in our own communities and opens vistas to other cultures. Reading and writing connects people and gives us another way to express our love for one another. September is Basic Education and Literacy Month in Rotary. Enhancing literacy skills is critical in our pursuit of reducing poverty, improving health, and promoting peace. In fact, if all students in low-income countries left school with basic reading skills, it would result in a significant cut in global poverty rates. Without education, illiterate children become illiterate adults. Today, 14 percent of the world’s adult population — 762 million people — lack basic reading and writing skills. Two-thirds of that group are women. Literacy and numeracy skills are essential to obtaining better housing, health care, and jobs over a lifetime. Especially for girls and women, literacy can be a life-or-death issue. If all girls completed their primary education, there would be far fewer maternal deaths. And a child is more likely to survive past age 5 if he or she is born to a mother who can read. Improving outcomes for more people worldwide is possible only if countries remove barriers to education for girls. The economic argument for doing so is clear: In some countries where schooling is geared toward boys, the cost of missed economic opportunity is more than $1 billion per year. Empowering people through education is among the boldest goals we have as Rotarians. We don’t have to travel far from our homes to encounter those whose lives are being curtailed because they struggle with reading, rely on others to read for them, or cannot write anything more than their own name. Starting this month, consider how your club can Serve to Change Lives through literacy: Support local organizations that offer free programs to support adult literacy or local language learning, or that provide teachers with professional development centered around reading and writing. Become literacy mentors, or work with an organization like the Global Partnership for Education to increase learning opportunities for children around the world. Have conversations with local schools and libraries to see how your club can support their existing programs or help create needed ones in your community. In India, the TEACH program, a successful collaboration between the country’s Rotary clubs and its government, has demonstrated how to scale up literacy efforts to reach millions of children. And at a time when schools across India were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the program’s e-learning component reached more than 100 million children through national television. Literacy is the first step out of poverty. As Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai has noted, “One child, one teacher, one book, and one pen can change the world.” 02

He is also a direc- tor of Operation Eyesight Universal (India), a Canada-based organization. Mehta has been actively involved in disaster response and is a trusted of ShelterBox, UK. After the 2004 ndian Ocean tsunami, he helped build nearly 500 homes for families affected by the disaster. He pioneered a program that has performed more than 1,500 life-changing heart surgeries in South Asia. He is also the architect of the TEACH Program, which promotes literacy throughout India and has reached thousands of schools. A Rotary member since 1984, Mehta has served Rotary as director, member or chair of several committees, zone coordi- nator, training leader, member of The Rotary Foundation Cadre of Technical Advisers, and district governor. He is also the chair of Rotary Foundation (India). Mehta has received Rotary’s Service Above Self Award and The Rotary Foundation’s Citation for Meritorious Service and Distinguished Service Awards. Born, on 10 September 1968; and brought up in a family, comes from Jamalpur; parented by a school teacher mother, and a father who was not only an activist but played a leading role in 1952 language movement, who could sacrifice a senior position in the then Pakistan Govt. central service for the dedication of contributing in educational sector. Groom- ing, in such context, made him a person of values and passionate towards social causes. His, by born, ‘versatile talents’ keeps him achieving golden successes in every square of life from education to career and even in other spheres, be it sports or culture. He joined Rotary in 2002 as a Charter member of RC Dhaka Fort and keeps serving in different positions. He led his club as the President for 2008-09. To him, ‘romance’ is what Gobinda Chandra Das, Kazi Nazrul articulated in their poetries; ‘romance’ is what Martin Luther King meant announcing, ‘I have a dream’; ‘romance’ is the ‘poem’ written in the Ramna race course on the Seventh March’ by the one and only Bangabandhu that propelled the emergence of Bangladesh. At district level, he served in many capacities including Assistant Gover- nor, Deputy Governor, Assistant District Trainer, Additional District Trainer, Secretary for District Training Assembly and District Conference, Chairs for Alumni, Membership Attraction and Engagement, Social Media Committee. In the RY 20-21, he was a member of the Core Team of Rotary District in the capacity of District Grant Sub Committee Chair (DGSC), Additional District Trainer, Committee Chair for Strategic Planning Promotion at Club Level and Member of National PolioPlus Committee. Here we are, this month physically gathered together for the second time, just recently released from “stay at home”. As I take on the role of President for one more year, I am optimistic that we will continue to our club meetings together in person. How exciting it will be to actually see your smiling faces directly before me at a club meeting! But, maybe I should be careful of what I wish for, because when you all start talking at once, I will not be able to ask one of you to put you on mute!!!
